சாஸ்திரங்களில் சொன்னதற்கு மாறாகச் ‘அச்சான்யம்’ என்ற பேரில் சிலவற்றைப் பின்பற்றுவதாக ரொம்ப காலமாகவே ஏற்பட்டிருக்கிறதாகத் தெரிகிறது. உதாரணமாக: தாயார் தகப்பனார் உள்ளவர்கள் பூணூலைத் தோள் மாற்றிப் போட்டுக் கொண்டால் பார்க்க அச்சான்யமாயிருக்கிறது. இதனால் பிரம்மயஜ்ஞத்தில் மாதா-பிதா உள்ளவர்கள்கூட, தங்கள் வம்சத்தின் நேர் மூன்ற மூதாதைகளைத் தவிர்த்து, வேத சாகா-ஸூத்ர முன்னோர்களுக்கு பூணூலை மாற்றிப் போட்டுக் கொண்டு தர்ப்பணம் பண்ணத்தான் வேண்டுமென்று சாஸ்திரத்தில் இருந்தாலும், அப்படிச் செய்யாமலிருக்கிறார்கள். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்
It is also observed that certain rules laid down in the sastras are not followed since long as they are believed to signify bad occurrence. For example, if a person wore his poonal on the right shoulder when both parents are alive, it is considered improper. Therefore people whose parents are alive do not perform certain rituals (Brahma Yagnam) towards their ancestors of Veda Shakha and Sutra with the poonal on their right shoulder even though the sastras specify that they should do so. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
