மேனா தூக்கும் கன்னையனின் அனுபவம்

பெரியவா செல்லும் மேனாவை தூக்குபவர்களுக்கு போகி என்று பெயர். அப்படி 1940 ல் தன் அப்பா பெத்த [பெரிய] போகியோடு மடத்துக்கு வந்த கன்னையனை பெரியவா, குஞ்சுமவன் பெத்தபோகி என்று செல்லமாக அழைப்பாராம். மேனா தூக்கும் காலத்துக்கப்புறமும் பெரியவாளோடு தன்னை இணைத்துக் கொண்டுவிட்ட கன்னையனின் ஆனந்த அனுபவங்கள்……

“ஒரு வாட்டி மேனாவைத் தூக்கினா…..ஆறு கிலோமீட்டர் நடப்போம். ஆறாவது கிலோமீட்டர்ல, இன்னொரு கோஷ்டி தயாரா நிப்பாங்க. தோள் மாத்திக்குவோம்…..நாங்க வேற வண்டில போயி ஆறு கிலோமீட்டருக்கு அப்பால காத்துகிட்டு இருப்போம். முன்னால நாலு பேரு, பின்னால நாலு பேரு……பொதுவா, ராத்திரி ஏழு மணிலேர்ந்து பத்து மணிவரை நடப்போம். நாங்க சாப்பிடற நேரங்கள்ள……பெரியவங்க எங்களை நல்லா சாப்பிடவிட்டுட்டு சும்மா ஒக்காந்திருப்பாரு…….நாங்க வந்ததும் “சாப்ட்டாச்சா?”..ன்னு விசாரிப்பாரு. ஒருதடவை விடிகாலை மூணு மணிக்கெல்லாம் கெளம்பி, கிட்டத்தட்ட எளுவத்தஞ்சு கிலோமீட்டர் ! காளையார் கோவில்ல காம்ப்! அங்கபோனதும், பெரியவங்க என்ன சொன்னாங்க தெரியுமா?……”எங்க ஆளுங்களுக்கு குளிக்க வெந்நீர் போட்டுக்குடு”…..ன்னு உத்தரவு போட்டாங்க! எங்கமேல அத்தனை கரிசனம்! “பாவம்…..போகிக்கெல்லாம் தோள் வலிக்கும்”…ன்னாங்க! நாங்க இருந்த எடத்துலேர்ந்து காம்ப்புக்கு ஒரு கிலோமீட்டர் தான் நடந்தே போறேன்னு சொல்லிட்டு போனாங்க. அப்புறம் அங்கேர்ந்து மூணு மணிக்கு கெளம்பி சிவகங்கை போனதும்,எங்களுக்கெல்லாம் ரெண்டு நாளு ரெஸ்ட் குடுத்தாங்க…..அதோட அந்த ஊர்க்காரங்ககிட்ட எங்களுக்காக அவரே கரிசனப்பட்டு என்ன சொன்னாங்க தெரியுமா? “இவாளுக்கு ரொம்ப ஸ்ரமம்…..வடை பாயசத்தோட சாப்பாடு போடு.”ன்னாங்க.”……[உணர்ச்சி மிகுதியால் அவர் கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தோடுகிறது] ஆம்! பெரியவா என்னும் அன்புருவத்தால் ஆளப்பட்டவர் அல்லவா!

“ஒரு நாளு, காலேல சுமார் ஒம்பது மணி இருக்கும்….வேதபுரி சாஸ்த்ரி, பெரியவங்களுக்கு தொண்டு பண்ணிக்கிட்டு இருந்தாரு. அப்போ, பெரியவங்க ஜபம் பண்ணிக்கிட்டு இருந்தாரு.பட்டணத்துலேர்ந்து செலபேர் பெரியவங்களை பாக்க வந்தாங்க. “பெரியவா ஜபம் பண்ணிண்டிருக்கார்…..இப்போ பாக்க முடியாது”…ன்னுட்டார் வேதபுரி. அவுங்க திரும்பி போய்ட்டாங்க. பெரியவங்க ஜபம் முடிஞ்சதும் வேதபுரிகிட்டே, “பட்டணத்துலேர்ந்து வந்தவா எங்கே?..” ன்னு கேட்டாங்க.

“அவா போய்ட்டா…”ன்னார் வேதபுரி.

“அவா…..ஒன்னைப்பாக்க வந்தாளா? என்னைப் பாக்க வந்தாளா?….” ன்னு கேட்டுட்டு, என்னைப்பாத்து “அவா பஸ் ஸ்டாண்டுல நின்னுண்டிருப்பா….போய் அழைச்சிண்டு வா!..” ன்னு சொன்னாங்க. நான் ஓடிப்போயி பஸ் ஸ்டாண்டுல நின்னுட்டு இருந்தவங்ககிட்ட பெரியவங்க கூப்பிடறாங்க..ன்னு சொன்னதும், அவுங்க மொகத்துல அத்தனை சந்தோசம்…..வேகமா ஓடி வந்து தரிசனம் பண்ணி, கொஞ்ச நேரம் பேசிகிட்டு இருந்தாங்க….மடத்துக்கு எதுனாச்சும் காணிக்கை குடுக்கணும்ன்னு அவுங்க கேட்டதும்,பெரியவங்க ஒடனே “போகிக்கு எதாவுது ஒதவி பண்ணுங்கோ!” ன்னு எங்களுக்காக அவர் ஒதவி கேட்டாருங்க”

நாப்பது வருசத்துக்கு முந்தி கொள்ளிடக்கரையில மேனா உள்ளார தபஸ் பண்ணிட்டு இருந்தாங்க. நான் பக்கத்துலதான் ஒக்காந்திருந்தேன். நல்ல இருட்டு. கொஞ்சநேரத்துல மானேஜர் வந்து பெரியவங்க கிட்ட ஏதோ சொல்லணும்னு மெல்ல கதவை திறந்தா…உள்ள பெரியவங்களைக் காணோம்! “திக்”ன்னு ஆயிடிச்சு! ரெண்டு நிமிஷம் கழிச்சு இருட்டுலேர்ந்து “என்ன?…”ன்னு கேட்டுகிட்டே பெரியவங்க வர்றாங்க!

“பெரியவா மேனாலேர்ந்து எறங்கினதை நீ பாக்கலியா?” ன்னு மானேஜர் கேட்டாரு….”கடவுளே! அதானே தெரியலே!…..இங்கேதான் ஒக்காந்திருக்கேன்! கதவும் மூடினபடிதான இருக்கு!….”

இப்பவும் அந்த இன்பமான அதிர்ச்சியில் அவர் உள்ளமும் முகமும் சிரித்தன! பாக்யசாலி!

Experiences of Mena Carrier Shri Kannayan

The people who carry the Palanquin (Mena) which Periyavaa used to travel were called “Bogi”. In 1940’s Kannayan came to Sri Matam along with his father Betha (Elder) Bogi. Periyavaa, lovingly used to call him as Kunjumavan Bethabogi. Following are the joyous experiences of Kannayan who stayed with Periyavaa, even after Periyavaa stopped travelling in Palanquin.

If we lift the Palanquin, we will walk for 6 kilometers at a stretch. In the 6^th Kilometer, another group will be ready for exchange and we will change shoulders. We will then travel for 6 kilometers in a vehicle and wait there for them to reach to exchange again. 4 people in the front and 4 people in the back used to carry the Palanquin. Usually we walk from 7 PM to 10 PM. When we take break for eating, Maha Periyavaa will be sitting idle, allowing us to eat well. Once we come back, he will enquire if we had food.

Once, we started early morning at 3 AM and walked for nearly 75 kilometers. The camp was in KaLaiyaar Temple. As soon we reached there, do you know what Periyavaa said to the people there? “Please give hot water for my people to take bath” was the order He gave. He had so much compassion towards us. He said, “Their shoulders would be aching”. The camp was 1 KM away from the place where we were at that point of time. Periyavaa said that he would walk that distance and went walking. After that when we started back from there at 3 PM and reached Sivagangai, He gave us 2 days rest. And do you know what he told the residents of that place? Periyavaa said “These people have a difficult job. Please make food with vadai and payasam” (When he says this Kannayan is emotionally moved, and tears are flowing)– True – He has been ruled by the epitome of compassion called Maha Periyavaa)

One day, morning approximately at 9 AM, Vedapuri Sastri was in Periyavaa’s service. Periyavaa was doing his morning ritual (Japam) at that time. Few people from the city, came to have Dharshan of Maha Periyavaa at that time. Vedapuri Sastri told them “Periyavaa is performing his morning Japam – You cannot see him now”. So, they left Sri Matam. Once he was out of his Japam, Periyavaa asked Vedapuri Sastri “Where are those who came from the city?”

Vedapuri Sastrigal replied as “They left”.

“Did they come to see you? Or did they come to see me?” asked Periyavaa. Then he looked at me and said “They will be in the Bus stand. Go and bring them here”. I ran to the bus stand, found them and asked them to come to Sri Matam since Periyavaa is calling them. They were so happy. They hurriedly came back to the Matam and had a dharshan of Periyavaa and were having a conversation for some time. When they asked if they can donate/provide an offering to the Matam, Periyavaa said “Do some help for the Bogis” – He asked help for us.

Before 40 years, once, on the banks of KoLLidam river, Periyavaa was mediating sitting inside the Palanquin. I was sitting near the Palanquin. It was very dark. After sometime, the manager came there since he had something to discuss with Periyavaa and opened the palanquin door slowly. But Periyavaa was not there inside. Both of us where shocked. After 2 minutes, Periyavaa came from the dark asking, “What happened?”

The manager asked me “Did you not see Periyavaa getting down from the Palanquin?” “Oh God! That’s what I also wondering! I am sitting right here, and the door is also closed as it was!” thought Kannayan.

Even now his face and heart are smiling thinking about that that sweet shock! Blessed man!
