மஹா பெரியவா பக்தர்களுக்கு ஆசியளிக்கும் போது, நகைச்சுவையாக பேசுவதும் உண்டு.
ஒரு சமயம், காஞ்சி காமாட்சியம்மன் கோயிலில் நவராத்திரி விழா நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. அதில் தினமும் வித்வான்கள் பாடுவர். விழாவின் ஒருநாள் மாலையில், பெரியவரை தரிசிக்க பக்தர் ஒருவர் வந்தார். எழுத்தாளரான அவர், தன் புத்தகங்களை பெரியவரிடம் காட்டி விளக்கம் அளித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். பக்தர்கள் பலர் தரிசனத்திற்காக காத்திருந்தனர். அவர்களைக் கண்டதும் பெரியவர் எழுத்தாளரிடம், “இப்போது நீ காமாட்சியம்மனைத் தரிசித்து விட்டு வா. அங்கு தர்பார் நடக்கிறது. சீக்கிரம் முடிந்து விடும், வேகமாகச் செல்,” என்றார்.
எழுத்தாளர் சென்றபோது, அம்மன் தர்பார் அலங்காரத்தில் இல்லாமல் வேறு அலங்காரத்தில் காட்சியளித்தாள்.
“பெரியவர் “தர்பார் அலங்காரம்’ என்று சொன்னாரே!. இங்கு வேறு அலங்காரத்தில் அம்பாள் இருக்கிறாளே!” என்று குழப்பமடைந்தார்.
அப்போது, இனிய கானம் காற்றில் மிதந்து வந்தது. தர்பார் ராகத்தில், “லோசனா.. கமல லோசனா” என்று பிரபல பாடகி எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமி பாடிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.
“அடடா..நாமோ தர்பார் அலங்காரம் என்று நினைத்து வந்தோம். இங்கே தர்பார் ராக பாடல் அல்லவா பாடப்படுகிறது! பெரியவர் சொன்னதை இப்படி புரிந்து கொண்டோமே! அவருடைய நகைச்சுவை உணர்வு தான் என்னே!” என்று சிரித்தபடியே, மற்றவர்களிடமும் இந்த நிகழ்வைப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.
மற்றவர்களும் இதுகேட்டு சிரிக்க, “”அது சரி…தர்பார் ராகத்தில் எம்.எஸ்., பாடுவார் என்பது முன்கூட்டியே எப்படி பெரியவருக்குத் தெரிந்தது! முக்காலமும் உணர்ந்த ஞானி என்று சொல்வது இதனால் தானோ என்று பரவசமும் அடைந்தனர்.
இதுமட்டும்தானா எம்பெருமான் விளையாடலில் இன்னுமொன்றும் உண்டே!
ஸ்ரீ பெரியவாளிடம் காஞ்சி பாட்டி பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தாளாம். அப்போது ஸ்ரீ மடத்து வாசலில் ஒரு அரிசி வியாபாரி அரிசி விற்பனைக்காகக் கூவியபடி சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தானாம். ரொம்ப சுவாரசியமா ஏதோ பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்த பாட்டியை இடைமறித்து ஸ்ரீ சரணர், “கேட்டாயா அவன் உங்கிட்ட தான் ஏதோ சொல்லிண்டே போறான்..” என்றாராம். அதுக்கு பாட்டி,” அவன் எல்லார்கிட்டயும் தான் கேட்டுண்டு போறான்” என்றார்.
அப்படி என்னதான் அவன் சொல்லிக்கொண்டு போயிருப்பான் என்று யோசிக்கிறீர்களா நண்பர்களே…!
“அரிசி வாங்கலியோ… அரிசி வாங்கலியோ…!”
ஸ்ரீ பெரியவாள், மறுபடியும் பாட்டியிடம் சொன்னார், “னோக்கு புரியரதோ இல்லியோ நெக்கு நன்னா புரிஞ்சுடுத்து…அவன் உன்க்ட்டே தான் சொல்லிண்டு போறான்..’ என்றார்.
பாட்டி மறுபடி காதைத் தீட்டிக்கொண்டு கேட்டாள். ”அவன் அரிசி வித்துண்டுதானே போயிண்ட்ருக்கான்”.
பெரியவா ஒரு புன்முறுவலுடன் பதிலளித்தாராம். அவன் “அரி சிவா ங்கலியோனு கேக்கறாமாதிரி தான் நேக்கு படறது”.
திகைத்துப் போன பாட்டி, சாஷ்டாங்கமா நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணினாலாம். சிவ..சிவ… ஹர..ஹர… ஜெய..ஜெய… சங்கரா….!
என்னென்று சொல்வேன் எந்தன் பெரு நாயகன் விளையாடல் தனை!
மஹானுபாவா! லோக ரக்ஷகா! வேதஞான மூர்த்தியே! எந்தன் தீவினையாவும் தீர்த்தருளி, நல்லன எல்லாம் எமக்கருளவேண்டும் குரு நாதா! அகில வுலகமும் ரக்ஷிக்கப்படவேண்டுமையா! அருட்கூர்ந்து எந்தன் திருமஞ்சனம் தனை ஏற்று பொன்னருள் புரியுங்கள், சுவாமி!

Maha Periyavaa used to talk in a humorous way also when blessing his devotees.
Once, Navarathri festival was going on in Kanchi Kamakshi Amman temple. Many Maestros used to sing in that festival. One day of such evening, a devotee came to have a dharshan of Periyavaa. He was a writer and he was showing his books to Maha Periyavaa and was explaining him about it. There were lot of other devotees who were waiting for having Maha Periyavaa’s dharshan. On seeing them, Periyavaa told the writer “Go and have a dharshan of Kamakshi Amman. Darbar is going on there and it will end soon. Go quickly.”
When the writer went there, Amman was in a different alankaaram and not in Darbar outfit (alankaaram).
The writer was confused thinking “Periyavaa told me ‘Darbar Alankaram’! But here Amman is in some other form”!
At that point, a sweet song came floating to his ears. The famous singer “M.S. Subbulakshmi” amma was singing the song “Lochana… Kamala Lochana…” in Darbar Raagam.
Smilingly he thought to himself “Oh… I came here thinking Darbar Alankaaram… But here a song on Darbar Raagam is being sung. I misunderstood what Periyavaa said! What an excellent sense of humor does He have!” He also shared this with others around him.
While other also laughed on hearing this incident, they also were fascinated thinking “How did Periyavaa knew before itself that M.S Amma will sing Darbar raagam? This is why Periyavaa is an “Omniscient” saint.
Is this the only incident? No! There is one more incident from Periyavaa’s Thiruvilayadal!
Once Kanchi Paati was talking to Sri Periyavaa. During that time, a rice merchant was passing by the entrance of Sri Matam, calling out people for buying rice from him. Maha Periyavaa interrupted Kanchi Paati who was talking about an interesting topic and said “Did you hear him? He is telling something to you”. Paati replied “He is asking everyone around and not specifically to me”.
(Meaning he is calling out people for selling his rice)
Friends, are you thinking what he was calling out?
“Arisi Vaangaliyo… Arisi Vaangaliyo” (Buy Rice…Buy Rice)
Sri Periyavaa again told to Paati “I am not sure if you understood! But I understood very well. He is asking you only”
Paati sharpened her ears and heard again and said “He is selling rice only”
Periyavaa replied with a smile “I only hear him as asking “(H)ari Siva ngaliyo (அரி சிவா ங்கலியோ)”
Paati was shocked on hearing this and prostrated in front of Periyavaa. Siva… Siva… Hara Hara Jaya Jaya Sankara…
