மஹா பெரியவா ஏன் அக்ஷதையை நிலத்தில் போட்டார்?

ராமசாமி ஐயருக்கு மஹாபெரியவாளுடன் மெய் சிலிர்க்கும் அனுபவங்கள் பல நிகழ்ந்துள்ளன. அவற்றுள் இன்னொரு சுவாரஸ்யமான நிகழ்வையும் பார்ப்போம்.

ஒருமுறை விழுப்புரத்துக்கு அருகே வேங்கிடாத்திரி அகரம் என்ற கிராமத்தில் முகாமிட்டிருந்தார் பெரியவா. சென்னை, திருச்சி, கும்பகோணம், சேலம் போன்ற பல ஊர்களில் இருந்தும் திரளான பக்தர்கள் பெரியவா தரிசனத்துக்காக அங்கே குவிந்தனர்.

இந்தக் கிராமத்தில் மஹாபெரியவா முகாமிட்டிருப்பது அறிந்து, அவரைத் தரிசனம் செய்வதற்காகத் தன் மனைவியையும் அழைத்துக் கொண்டு சேலத்தில் இருந்து பயணமானார் ராமசாமி ஐயர்.

வேங்கிடாத்திரி அகரத்தில் மஹாபெரியவாளை உள்ளம் குளிரத் தரிசித்து விட்டு, சேலம் புறப்படுவதற்காக உத்தரவு கேட்டார் ராமசாமி. பெரியவாளும் புன்னகையுடன் அவரை ஆசிர்வதித்து, உத்தரவு கொடுத்தார். அப்போது மேனாவில் (யாத்திரையின் போது பயன்படுத்தப்படும் பல்லக்கு) இருந்தபடியே பக்தர்கள் எல்லோருக்கும் அட்சதையை அவரவர் வஸ்திரத்தில் ஆசிர்வாதமாகப் போட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார் பெரியவா. கருணைத் தெய்வத்தின் திருக்கரங்களால் அட்சதை பெறும் பாக்கியத்தைப் பெரும் பேறாக எண்ணிய பலரும், தங்களது மேல்வேஷ்டியை மற்றும் புடவைத் தலைப்பை அவருக்கு முன் நீட்டி, அதில் விழும் அட்சதையைத் தங்கள் கண்களில் ஒற்றிக் கொண்டு பத்திரப்படுத்தினர்.

இப்படி அட்சதை பெற்றுக் கொள்ள விரும்பி நின்றிருந்தவர்களின் நீண்ட வரிசையில் தன்னையும் இணைத்துக் கொண்டார் ராமசாமி. பெரியவாளின் அட்சதையுடன் பயணப்படலாமே என்பது அவரது எண்ணம். ராமசாமியின் மனைவியும் ஓர் ஓரமாக நின்றபடி பெரியவா தரிசனத்தில் மெய்மறந்து காணப்பட்டார்.

வரிசையில் நின்றிருந்தவர்கள், ஒவ்வொருவராக நகர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். இப்போது ராமசாமி ஐயரின் முறை வந்தது. மிகுந்த பயபக்தியுடன் தனது மேல்வஸ்திரத்தை அகலமாகப் பிரித்து பெரியவாளின் முன்னே ராமசாமி நீட்டினார். ஆனால் நிகழ்ந்தது வேறு விதமாக இருந்தது.

தன் ஆசிர்வாதமான அட்சதையை அவரது வஸ்திரத்தில் போடாமல் தரையில் மண்ணோடு மண்ணாகப் போட்டார் பெரியவா.

இது கண்டு மிகவும் கலக்கமுற்றார் ராமசாமி. அருகே இருந்த அவரது மனைவியும் ஏகத்துக்கும் வருத்தமுற்றார். தரையில் விழுந்த அட்சதையை எடுக்கலாமா, வேண்டாமா என்கிற தயக்கத்தில் இருந்தனர் இருவரும். அப்போது முகம் நிறைய பிரகாசத்தோடு, ‘என்ன ராமசாமி..அட்சதை தரைல விழுந்துடுத்தேனு பார்க்கறியா… மண்ணோடு மண்ணாக அந்த அட்சதையை அப்படி எடுத்து நீயும் உன் பார்யாளும் மடில முடிஞ்சு வெச்சுக்கோங்கோ’ என்றார் பெரியவா நிதானத்துடன்.

இந்த நிகழ்வைக் கண்டு சுற்றி நின்றவர்களும் ஒரு கணம் திகைத்தனர். எல்லோருக்கும் அவரது மேல்வஸ்திரத்திலோ, புடவையிலோ அட்சதையை ஆசிர்வாதத்தோடு தெளிந்த மஹாபெரியாவா, இவரது முறை வரும்போது மட்டும் ஏன் மணலில் – அதாவது தரையில் அட்சதையைப் போட்டார். இதற்கு என்ன அர்த்தம் என்ன என்று குழம்பினார்கள்.

மஹாபெரியவா என்கிற கருணைத் தெய்வம் மனம் கனிந்து சொல்கிறதே என்பதற்காக தரையில் குனிந்து, மணலோடு மணலாகச் சிதறிக் கிடந்த அட்சதையை ஒருவிதமான உணர்ச்சியுடன் பொறுக்கி எடுத்து மடியில் முடிந்து கொண்டனர் இருவரும்.

‘போயிட்டு வாப்பா ராமசாமி…. அதான் உனக்கு உத்தரவு அப்பவே கொடுத்துட்டேனே! என்று வரை புன்சிரிப்புடன் வழியனுப்பினார் பெரியவா.

ராமசாமிக்கு அடுத்து வரிசையில் வந்தவர்களுக்கு வழக்கம் போல் மேல் வஸ்திரத்திலேயே அட்சதை போட்டு ஆசிர்வதித்து அனுப்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார் மஹான்.

சேலம் திரும்புவதற்கு ராமசாமி ஐயருக்கு மஹாபெரியவா உத்தரவு கொடுத்த பிறகு, வேங்கிடாத்திரி அகரத்தில் இருந்து மனைவியுடன் வண்டியில் புறப்பட்டார். சுகமான காற்று உடலை வருடிக் கொண்டிருந்தாலும், ராமசாமி ஐயரின் மனம், மணலில் போட்ட அட்சதையிலேயே இருந்தது.

சேலத்துக்கு வண்டியில் போகும்போது ராமசாமியும் அவரது மனைவியும் இயல்பான நிலையில் இல்லை. அட்சதையை பெரியவா மணல் மேல் போட்ட நினைவே ஃப்ளாஷ்-பேக் போல் திரும்பத் திரும்ப வந்து கொண்டிருந்தது.

ஏன் மணலில் அட்சதையைப் போட்டு அதை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளச் சொன்னார்? மற்றவர்கள் போல் நமக்கு வஸ்திரத்தில் போடவில்லையே… இந்த நிகழ்வு எதை உணர்த்துகிறது?

சேலத்தை நோக்கி வண்டி வேகத்தில் போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தாலும் ராமசாமியின் மனதில் வெறுமையே இருந்தது.

எல்லோருக்கும் அவரவர் மேல்வஸ்திரத்திலோ, புடவைத் தலைப்பிலோ விழுமாறு அட்சதையைப் போட்ட மஹா பெரியவா, தனக்கு மட்டும் மேல்வஸ்திரத்தில் போடாமல் ஏன் தரையில் போட்டார் என்று மருகிப் போனார் ராமசாமி ஐயர். எவ்வளவு முயன்றும்,யோசித்தும் இதற்கான விடை அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கவில்லை. மகான்களின் இயல்பை மனிதர்கள் அறிய முடியுமா?

ஆனால், சேலத்துக்கு வந்ததும் இந்த நிகழ்வு அன்றே அவரது நினைவில் இருந்து விடுபட்டது. காரணம் – வழக்கமான அவரது வக்கீல் பணிகள். இயல்பு வேலைகளில் பிஸியானார் ராமசாமி ஐயர்.

வேங்கடாத்திரி அகரத்தில் இருந்து சேலத்துக்கு வந்த இரண்டாம் நாள் மதியம்… அன்று ஏதோ முக்கிய பணிக்காக வீட்டில் இருந்த ராமசாமி ஐயருக்கு, கனமான பதிவுத் தபால் ஒன்று வந்தது. அனுப்பியவர் முகவரியைப் பார்த்தார். அதில், அவரது மாமனாரின் பெயரும் விலாசமும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டிருந்தது. சாதாரணமாக ஒரு இன்லேண்ட் கடிதம் எழுதி, சம்பிரதாயத்துக்கு விசாரிப்பவர், பதிவுத் தபாலில் என்ன அனுப்பி இருப்பார் என்கிற ஆவலுடன், மனைவியையும் உடன் வைத்துக் கொண்டு பிரித்தார்.

உள்ளே – ரெஜிஸ்திரார் அலுவலகத்தில் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்ட பத்திரம் ஒன்று இருந்தது. ஒரு கணம் குழம்பியவர், பத்திரத்தில் உள்ள வாசகங்களை முழுக்கப் படித்து விட்டுப் பிரமித்துப் போனார். பத்திரத்துடன் இருந்த ஒரு கடிதத்தில், ராமசாமியின் மாமனார் தன் கைப்பட எழுதி இருந்தார்: ‘வக்கீல் தொழிலில் சிறந்து விளங்கினாலும், சொந்தமாக நில புலன் எதுவும் இல்லாமல் இருந்து வரும் உங்களுக்கு – உங்கள் பெயரிலேயே ஏதாவது நிலம் எழுதி வைக்கலாம் என்று திடீரெனத் தோன்றியது. அதன் வெளிப்பாடுதான், இத்துடன் இணைத்திருக்கும் பத்திரம். தங்கள் பெயருக்குப் பதிவு செய்து, சில ஏக்கர் நன்செய் நிலங்களை எழுதி வைத்திருக்கிறேன். இறைவனின் அருளுடனும், தாங்கள் வணங்கும் மகா பெரியவா ஆசியுடனும் இதை நல்லபடியாக வைத்துக் கொண்டு சுபிட்சமாக வாழுங்கள்.’

ராமசாமி ஐயருக்கும் அவரது மனைவிக்கும் ஏக சந்தோஷம்.இருக்காதா பின்னே!எதிர்பார்க்காத நேரத்தில் இப்படி ஒரு சொத்து – அதுவும் நல்ல நன்செய் நிலம் – தானாகக் கைக்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தால், மனம் மகிழ்ச்சியில் துள்ளாதா? பரவசப்பட்டுப் போனார்கள் இருவரும்.

மாமனாரிடம் இருந்து தானமாக வந்த நில புலன்களில் ஏற்கெனவே பயிர்கள் நன்றாக விளைந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. மகசூலும் நன்றாக இருந்தது. அதனால், இதைப் பராமரிப்பதில் பெரிதாக ஒன்றும் சிரமம் இல்லை ராமசாமி ஐயருக்கு. நேரம் கிடைக்கும்போதெல்லாம் நேரில் போய் நல்ல முறையில் பார்த்து வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.

இதற்கிடையில் வேங்கடாத்திரி அகரத்தில் மகா பெரியவா,அட்சதையை ஏன் தரையில் போட்டார் என்கிற சம்பவத்தை ஏறக்குறைய மறந்தே போயிருந்தார் ராமசாமி ஐயர். ஆனால், அப்படி அட்சதை போட்டு ஆசி புரிந்த மகா பெரியவா இதை மறப்பாரா?

நில புலன்கள் சேர்ந்தால் நிலச் சுவான்தார்தானே! இப்படி ஒரு நிலச் சுவான்தார் ஆன பிறகு, ‘இந்த நல்ல செய்தியை மகா பெரியவாளிடம் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்.’ என்று எண்ணினார் ராமசாமி ஐயர். ஒரு நாள் காஞ்சிக்குப் போய் அவரைத் தரிசிக்க ஆர்வம் கொண்டார்.அந்த நாளும் கூடிய விரைவிலேயே வாய்த்தது.

தனது நிலத்தில் இருந்து முதன் முதலாக அறுவடை ஆன நெல்லில் இருந்து, அரிசி அரைத்துக் கொண்டு, அந்த அரிசி மூட்டைகளுடன் காஞ்சிபுரம் மடத்துக்கு வந்தார் ராமசாமி ஐயர். அந்த மூட்டைகளுள் ஒன்றில் இருந்து சில அரிசி மணிகளை எடுத்து, தன் மேல்துண்டில் முடிந்து வைத்துக் கொண்டு ஒரு குழந்தையைப் போல் மகா பெரியவா முன்னால் போய் நின்றார். உடன், அவரது மனைவியும் இருந்தார்.

“வாப்பா ராமசாமி… சேலத்துலேர்ந்து வர்றியா? இல்லே உன் வயல்லேர்ந்து நேரா இங்கே வர்றியா?” – மகா பெரியவா கேட்டதும், ராமசாமி ஐயர் வாயடைத்துப் போனார். ஏதும் பேசவில்லை. மகா பெரியவாளே தொடர்ந்தார்:“இப்பல்லாம் உன் நிலத்துல விளைஞ்ச அரிசியைத்தான் சமைச்சு சாப்பிடுறாயாமே?”

மகா பெரியவா திருவாய் மலர்ந்தருளிய மறுகணம் விதிர்விதிர்த்துப் போனார் ராமசாமி ஐயர். சட்டென்று நிதானத்துக்கு வந்து, “ஆமா பெரியவா.வேங்கடாத்திரி அகரத்துக்கு வந்து பெரியவாளைத் தரிசனம் பண்ணிட்டு ஊருக்குப் போன உடனே,என் மாமனார்கிட்டேர்ந்து பத்திரம் வந்தது. நிலமே இல்லாமல் இருந்த எனக்கு, அவராவே சில ஏக்கர்களை எழுதி சாசனம் பண்ணி, தபால்ல அனுச்சிருந்தார். அதான் பெரியவாளைப் பாத்துச் சொல்லிட்டுப் போகலாம்னு வந்தேன்.முதல் விளைச்சல்ல வந்த சில அரிசி மூட்டைங்களையும் மடத்துக்குக் காணிக்கையா கொண்டு வந்திருக்கேன்.”

“எல்லாம் சரிதான். அன்னிக்கு உன் மேல்வஸ்திரத்துல போட வேண்டிய அட்சதையை நிலத்துல போட்டபோது குனிஞ்சு எடுக்கறப்ப, அவ்வளவு வருத்தப்பட்டியே ராமசாமி… இன்னிக்கு அதே மாதிரிதானே, இந்த அரிசியைக் கொண்டு வர்றதுக்கும் குனிஞ்சு நிமிர்ந்திருக்கே! உன் சொந்த நிலத்துல குனிஞ்சு, கதிர் அறுத்த நெல்லை அரிசி ஆக்கி, உன் மேல்வஸ்திரத்துல முடிஞ்சு வெச்சுண்டு இப்ப என்னைப் பாக்க வந்திருக்கே?! இல்லியா?” என்று சொல்லி விட்டு, இடி இடியென பெரியவா சிரித்தபோது, ராமசாமியின் கண்களில் இருந்து பொலபொலவென்று நீர் சுரந்தது. மகா பெரியவாளின் ஞான திருஷ்டியை உணர்ந்து மெய் சிலிர்த்தார். பெரியவாளின் இந்தப் பேச்சைக் கேட்ட பிறகு அவரது மனைவிக்குப் பேச்சே எழவில்லை.

மேல்வஸ்திரத்தை எடுத்துப் பிரித்து, அதில் முடிந்து வைத்திருந்த அரிசியைக் கையில் திரட்டி, மகா பெரியவாளின் முன்னால் இருந்த ஒரு பித்தளைத் தட்டில் சமர்ப்பித்தார் ராமசாமி. பிறகு, அவரது திருப்பாதங்களுக்குப் பெரிய நமஸ்காரம் செய்தார். “ஆமா பெரியவா… அன்னிக்கு நீங்க பண்ண அனுக்ரஹத்தாலதான் எனக்கு இன்னிக்கு இப்படி ஒரு சொத்து கிடைச்சிருக்கு. கூடிய சீக்கிரமே நிலம் உனக்குக் கிடைக்கப் போறதுங்கறதை சொல்லாம சொன்னேள்! அட்சதையை நிலத்துல போட்டேள். இந்த மூளைக்கு அப்ப இது எட்டலை. உங்களோட கருணைக்கும், தீட்சண்யத்துக்கும் அளவேது பெரியவா” என்று சொல்லி, முகத்தை மூடிக் கொண்டு தேம்பலானார்.

இதை அடுத்து, அந்தப் பரப்பிரம்மம், தியானத்தில் மூழ்கியது.

‘சொந்தமாக நில புலன் உனக்குக் கிடைக்கும்’ என்பதை தீர்க்க தரிசனமாக ராமசாமி ஐயருக்கு உணர்த்த விரும்பிய மகா பெரியவா, வஸ்திரத்தில் போட வேண்டிய அட்சதையைத் தரையில் போட்டதன் தாத்பர்யம் அவரைத் தவிர வேறு யாரால்தான் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும்?

Why did Maha Periyava put Akshadhai in the Ground?

Ramasamy Iyer has had many real cherishing experiences with Maha Periyavaa. Let’s look at one of those interesting experiences.

Once Periyavaa was camping in a village called Venkatadhri Akaram near Villupuram. Many devotees from cities like Chennai, Trichy, Kumbakonam, Salem were flocking the village for having a dharshan of Maha Periyavaa.

Knowing that Periyavaa is camping in that village, Ramasamy Iyer and his wife started from Salem to have a dharshan of Periyavaa.

After having a satisfying dharshan of Maha Periyavaa, Ramasamy asked Periyavaa’s permission to leave for Salem. Periyavaa also smilingly gave his blessings and permission to leave. Periyavaa was then sitting in the Mena (The Palanquin that is used during Periyavaa’s travel) and giving them Akshadai as a blessing in their garments which devotees held in front of them. All the devotees who considered the privilege of receiving the Akshadai from Maha Periyavaa’s hands as a great blessing, were holding their Angavasthram (Garment men use to cover the upper part of the body) and women were holding the tail end of their sarees. They were collecting the Askshadai which fell in them as a blessing and safeguarding it.

Ramasamy also joined the long queue of devotees who were waiting for their chance to receive the Askhadai. He was thinking of getting Akshadai from Periyavaa before leaving. Ramasamy’s wife was also standing in a corner and was lost in Periyavaa’s dharshan.

People standing the queue were moving one by one after receiving the Akshadai. It was Ramasamy’s turn now. With utter devotion Ramasamy held his Angavastram out widely in front of Periyavaa. But what happened was different. Periyavaa put his blessing Akshadai not on his Angavastram but on the ground on the sand.

Seeing this Ramasamy was very worried. His wife who was near him was also worried much. Both were wondering if to take the Askshadai which fell in the ground on sand. Periyavaa, then with a bright face said, “What Ramasamy? Are you thinking that Akshadai fell on the ground? You and your wife pick up the Akshadai along with the sand and tie it in your garments tail ends.”

People who were standing around watching this incident were also shocked. Why did Periyavaa, who was giving everyone the Akshadai as a blessing in their Angavasthram or their Sarees, only when it came to Ramasamy’s turn put it in the sand i.e., in the ground? They were confused thinking what is the meaning of all this?

Just because Maha Periyavaa, the Kindest God was saying, both of them with emotions bent down and took the Akshadhai which was spread on the sand and tied it to the tail ends of their clothes.

“You can leave Ramasamy – I have already given you permission to leave right?” said a smiling Periyavaa bidding farewell to him. For those who came in the queue next to Ramasamy, Periyavaa was giving the akshadhai as usual in their Angavasthram and blessing them.

Since Periyavaa gave permission to return to Salem, Ramasamy and his wife started from Venkadathri Akaram in a vehicle. Though a pleasant breeze was caressing his body, Ramasamy’s mind was still in the akshadhai which fell on the ground.

When they were returning to Salem, both Ramasamy and his wife were not in a normal state of mind. The thought of Maha Periyavaa putting the akshadhai on the sand was coming back and back like a flashback in their minds.

“Why did He put the akshadhai on the sand and asked us to take it? He didn’t put it in our garments like he did for others. What does this incident indicate?” Though the vehicle was travelling fast towards Salem, Ramasamy’s mind was empty.

Ramasamy was very sad thinking “Why did Maha Periyavaa, who was giving everyone the Akshadai as a blessing in their Angavasthram or their Sarees, only when it came to my turn put it in the sand?” Inspite of trying and thinking about this again and again he couldn’t get an answer for this question. Can mere mortals understand the nature of Great Saints?

But as soon as they came to Salem, this thought was out of his mind. Reason being his advocate job. He became busy in his normal day to day job.

2 days after they came back from Venkadathri Akaram to Salem, that afternoon, when Ramasamy was at his house for an important work, he received a registered parcel in his name. He saw who the sender was, and it contained his father-in-law’s name and address. Usually his father law sends only an Inland letter and enquires about their well being as a formality. So wondering what he sent in the registered letter, Ramasamy called his wife along and opened the letter.

Inside, they found a deed (document) documented in the Registrar Office. Confused for a minute, Ramasamy was overwhelmed when he read the complete contents of the deed. There was a letter handwritten by his father in law along with the deed which read “Though you are excelling in your lawyer job, since you do not have any land which belongs to you, it suddenly occurred to me to register a land in your name. The result of that is the deed document attached with this letter. I have registered few acres of harvesting land in your name. With blessings of God and with the blessings of Maha Periyavaa whom you pray to, please own these and live prosperously.

Ramasamy Iyer and his wife were overjoyed. Why won’t they be! A property, that too harvest land, when it comes to their hand unexpectedly won’t their minds jump in joy? Both were ecstatic. The harvest land which came from their father-in-law was yielding good crops. The harvest was also good. So Ramasamy Iyer didn’t have any difficulties in maintaining it. He used to visit the land whenever he had time and was supervising it well.

In all this, Ramasamy Iyer had completely forgotten the incident that Periyavaa dropped the akshadhai on the ground. But how will Maha Periyavaa who did that and gave his blessings forget this?

Once he became the land owner, Ramasamy Iyer thought that he should share this good news with Periyavaa. So he wished to go to Kanchipuram and have a dharshan of Maha Periyavaa. That day also came soon.

Ramasamy Iyer took the first batch of raw rice which was harvested in his land and went to Kanchipuram with the sack of pounded rice bags. He took few rice particles from one of the rice bag and folded it in his angavasthram and stood in front of Maha Periyavaa as a kid. His wife was also standing near him.

“Welcome Ramasamy… Are you coming from Salem? Or are you coming directly from your rice field?” Once Maha Periyavaa asked this Ramasamy Iyer was speechless. He didn’t say anything. Periyavaa continued “Looks like nowadays you are only having the cooked rice which was harvested in your rice field”?

Once Maha Periyavaa asked his Ramasamy Iyer was shaken. He immediately came back to his senses and said “Yes Periyavaa. Once I went back from Venkadathri Akaram after having a dharshan of Periyavaa, after reaching home, I received the registered deed document from my father-in-law. For me who didn’t have any land in my name, my father-in-law out of his own interest, registered some land in my name and sent it in a registered post. So, I decided to come to meet Periyavaa to share this news. Also, I got few rice bags from the first harvest as an offering to the matam.”

“All this is Ok – But the other day when I put the akshadhai in the ground and you had to bend over to take it, you were so worried right… But today to bring this rice here you have bent the same way, right? You have bent over in your own land and reaped the paddy, pound it to get the rice, have got a handful of rice folded in your angavastram and came to see me with it right?” said Maha Periyavaa and laughed heartily. Tears rolled out of Ramasamy’s eyes. He was mesmerized realizing the foresightedness of Maha Periyavaa. After listening to Maha Periyavaa, Ramasamy’s wife was also speechless.

Ramasamy took out the handful of rice he had in his angavasthram and offered it my placing in a copper plate which was in front of Maha Periyavaa. After that he prostrated in front of Periyavaa. “Yes Periyavaa… Only because of your grace and mercy only I got such a property today. You showed me an indication that I am going to get a land soon by dropping the akshadhai on the ground. My brain couldn’t comprehend it back then. There is no limit to your kindness and grace Periyavaa” after saying this Ramasamy covered his face and started sobbing.

After this the Great Saint went deep in his meditation.
