Similar to the Varna distinction, is the Ashrama rule for the Brahmin. With the thought that Brahmachari (youth) should not be asked to fast, no restrictions have been prescribed for a Brahmachari as regards the quantity he can consume. But the restrictions are imposed when it is a question of the quality of food – he can consume only strict vegetarian food. But he can eat a lot without observing any fasting.
