நாலாம் வர்ணத்திலும் உடல் வருந்தி உழைத்து ஸமூஹத்துக்கு உபகாரம் பண்ண வேண்டிய அவனுக்கு அவனுடைய சூழ்நிலையில் வெஜிடேரியனிஸத்தை வைக்காமல் விட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் காலப்போக்கில் அந்த வர்ணத்தாரிலேயே பலர் உடம்பு வேலை செய்கிறவர்களாக இல்லாமல், வியாபாரம், வியவஸாயம் முதலியவற்றில் ஈடுபட்டு வளர்ச்சி அடைந்தபோது, தாங்களாகவே சைவ ஆஹாரத்தை எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். வடக்கேயும் சரி, தெற்கேயும் தஞ்சாவூர் ஜில்லாவில் அநேக வேளாளர்கள், திருநெல்வேலியில் பிள்ளைமார் போன்றவர்களும் சரி, பிராம்மணன்கூடத் தோற்றுப்போய் விடுவான் என்கிற அளவுக்குப் பரம சுத்தமான மரக்கறி போஜனம், வ்ரதாநுஷ்டானம் வைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்
In the fourth Varna too, people who serve the society by hard physical labor are not prescribed vegetarianism. But, during the course of time, when people belonging to this section of society became businessmen and farmers, having given up physical labor, they have adopted vegetarian diet voluntarily.
