Cauvery Pushkaram (Sep 12 to 24, 2017) – A Brief Description

With a the Blessings of Mahaperiyava, Kanchi Sankaracharyas, Dharmapuram, Thiruvaduthurai, Suriyanar, Thirupananthal and Velakurichi Adheenams and other spiritual leaders and with the blessings of the Almighty and Cauvery Matha we are planning to celebrate Cauvery Maha Pushkaram in a grand manner at Mayiladuthurai from Tuesday, September 12, 2017 to September 24th 2017.

As is widely known Pushkaram is an Indian festival dedicated to worshiping of rivers. It is celebrated at shrines along the banks of 12 major sacred rivers in India. The celebration happens annually once in 12 years along each major river per our traditional calendar. Each river is associated with a zodiac sign and the river for each year festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at that time. From Tuesday, Sep. 12, 2017, Guru will change his position from Kanya to Thulam and from Thulam to Vrichigam. The rasi of Cauvery is Thulam which  coincides with this celestial event. We must celebrate this across the thula kattam of Cauvery banks at Mayiladuthurai (amajor cultural and traditional town about 250 kms south of Chennai) this year.

The Pushkaram of this year is considered as Maha pushkaram as it happens to fall once in 144 years and the whole Bharatiya society will benefit significantly if we can take a dip in the river Cauvery during that time.

Holy dip in a pushkaram river will help to cleanse the inner selves, wash out the evils and open up a path of righteous living. Pushkara snanams are also believed to have curative properties from chronic ill health. During pushkaram periods Brahaspathi, Lord Shiva and Lord Narayana all are eternally present in the theerthas.

Our cultural belief is that all holy rivers including Ganga matha perform holy dip in the Cauvery river mouth called Thulakattam situated in Mayiladuthurai on this occasion.

This pushkaram is important for all people of Bharatham to get rid of their Paapam (sins). It is said that it is advisable to do pariharam santhi for Kanya, Thulam, and Vrichiga rasi in first phase and Mesham, Mithunam, kumbam and Meena rasis in the second phase.

Various activities like Vedaparayanam, Maharudram, Thirumurai parayanam, Pithur karyam, Parihara pooja, Visesha pooja, Cauvery Arthi etc.etc. is planned during Cauvery Pushkaram.
