Nowadays, Ever-silver has come to be widely used. The lamp used for worship and the pot for keeping the kalasam are being manufactured in this metal. Even persons who used to observe the scriptural rule that iron vessels should not be used for worship have started using Ever-silver. Their argument is that use of iron vessels was prohibited for the reason that iron could get rusted and thus was a health hazard and in the process of making Ever-silver this factor is removed and hence the hazard to health is also removed. They declare that the Ever-silver can be used after performing the necessary expiation for the use of iron. They assume that iron was prohibited only on account of the formation of rust and thus Ever-silver can be made scripturally admissible. But sastras had prohibited use of iron not merely for reasons of rust. Iron is sinful. It can absorb demonic powers and the powers of virulent planets like Saturn and bring them to us.
