7. Sri Sankara Charitham by Maha Periyava – Yogas Enunciated by Gita

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – In this chapter Sri Periyava talks about the three yogas, viz., Karma, Bhakthi, and Gnana which was explained in detail in previous chapters. Also explains how the term ‘Yoga’ may have been suffixed in  Gita chapter titles.

Many Jaya Jaya Sankara to our sathsang volunteers, Shri ST Ravikumar for the sincere translation and Smt. Sowmya Murali for the sketch & audio. There is a subtlety in this beautiful sketch. கீதை கூறும் யோகங்கள்

இப்படி முக்யமாக மூன்று யோகங்களை பகவான் சொன்னதோடு, அவற்றின் பிரிவாகப் பதினெட்டு அத்யாயங்களிலும் வரும் ஒவ்வொரு விஷயத்துக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு யோகம் என்றே பெயர் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். ஸாங்க்ய யோகம், கர்ம யோகம், என்பவைதான் (முறையே) நேராக நிவ்ருத்தி, ப்ரவ்ருத்தி மார்க்கங்களைக் குறிப்பிடுபவை. ஒரு அத்யாயத்திற்கு — பன்னிரண்டாம் அத்யாயத்திற்கு — பக்தியோகம் என்று பெயர். இவை தவிர த்யான யோகம், ராஜவித்யா-ராஜகுஹ்ய யோகம், விபூதி யோகம், புருஷோத்தம யோகம் என்றெல்லாம் மொத்தம் பதினெட்டு யோகங்கள் கீதையில் heading-ஆகக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. அர்ஜுன விஷாத யோகம் என்று முதல் அத்யாயத்திற்குப் பேர். அதாவது அர்ஜுனனின் மனக்குழப்பத்துக்குக்கூட ‘யோகம்’ என்று பெயர்!‘பகவான்தான் இப்படிப் பதினெட்டு அத்யாயத்திற்கும் தலைப்புப் போட்டாரா? அவர் பாட்டுக்கு அர்ஜுனனோடு ஸம்வாதம் பண்ணிக்கொண்டு (ஸம்பாஷித்துக் கொண்டு) தானே போனார்? நடுவில் அத்யாயத் தலைப்பு எங்கே வந்தது?’ என்று கேட்டால் எனக்கு பதில் சொல்லத் தெரியாது. கீதை பகவான் சொன்னது என்று வழிவழியாக வந்திருக்கும் நம்பிக்கை நமக்குப் போதும். அதை பாரதத்தில் சேர்த்து எழுதிய வ்யாஸர் அத்யாயத் தலைப்புப் போட்டிருந்தால், அதுவும் பகவானே போட்ட மாதிரிதான். வ்யாஸரும் பகவானின் அவதாரம் தான்; அம்சாவதாரம்.

விஷாதத்தை, (அதாவது) மனக் குழப்பத்தை, ஏன் யோகமென்று சொன்னார்? அதனால் (அந்த மனக் குழப்பத்தால்) தானே அவனுக்கு ஆத்ம ஸம்பந்தமாக நினைக்கத் தோன்றிற்று? அதனால்தான்! அதுவரையிலும் அவன் எத்தனையோ பேருடன் கொஞ்சம்கூட மனக்குழப்பமேயில்லாமல் சண்டை போட்டு ஜயித்து “விஜயன்” என்றே பெயர் வாங்கியிருக்கிறான். இப்போதுதான் இந்த குருக்ஷேத்ரத்தில் பாட்டனாரான பீஷ்மர், ஆசார்யரான த்ரோணர், பெரியப்பா பிள்ளைகளான கௌரவர்கள் முதலானவர்களைப் பார்க்கும்போது அவனுக்கு மனஸ் குழம்பி, ‘இவாளை ஜயிச்சு ராஜ்யம் ஆண்டு என்ன ஆகணும்? இதைவிட, எல்லாத்தையும் விட்டுட்டு பிச்சை வாங்கிச் சாப்பிடறது மேல்’ என்ற எண்ணங்கள் தோன்றியிருக்கின்றன. இது மனஸ் பக்குவப்பட்டு கனிந்து ஏற்பட்ட விரக்தி இல்லைதான். இதுவரை ஹிம்ஸையா, அஹிம்ஸையா என்று யோசிக்காமல் அந்நிய மநுஷ்யர்களுடன் பராக்ரமத்தோடு யுத்தம் செய்தவன், இன்று ‘இவா நம்ம மநுஷாளாச்சே’ என்ற அஞ்ஞான அட்டாச்மென்டினாலேயேதான், பாச பந்தத்தினாலேயே தான் ஒரு அசட்டு விரக்தியில் நினைத்திருக்கிறான். தர்ம யுத்தம் செய்யவேண்டிய அவன் இப்படி அசடாகி விட்டானே என்றுதான் பகவான் அவனை வைகிறார். ஆனாலும் இப்படி ஒரு குழப்பம் வந்ததால்தானே அவன் ராஜ்ய போகம் தவிர வேறொன்றை, நிவ்ருத்தியை, நினைக்க முடிந்தது? ஸத்ய தத்வத்தை பகவான் அவனுக்கு உபதேசிப்பதும் இதனால் தானே ஸாத்யமாயிற்று? அதுவரை, திருட்டுத்தனம் பண்ணிக்கூட ஸுபத்ரையை அவனுக்கு விவாஹம் பண்ணுவிப்பது முதலான கார்யங்களைத்தான் பகவான் அவனுக்குப் பண்ண முடிந்ததே தவிர, ஞானோபதேசம் என்று வாயைத் திறக்க முடிந்ததோ? அதனால் எப்படியோ ஒரு விதத்தில் விஷாதமும் நல்லதில் கொண்டு சேர்த்ததால் அதற்கு ‘விஷாத யோகம்’ என்றே பெயர் ஏற்பட்டுவிட்டது!

பகவான் அர்ஜுனனுக்கு உபதேசம் பண்ணும் காலத்தில் சித்த சுத்தியை அடைந்து பரமாத்மாவோடு ஏகீபாவம் பெறுவதற்கு உபாயமாக, அநுகூலமாக உள்ள எல்லாவற்றையுமே ‘யோகம்’, ‘யோகம்’ என்று பெயர் கொடுத்துச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டு போனார். ‘சேர்க்கை’ என்பதுதான் ‘யோகம்’ என்பதற்கு அர்த்தமென்றால், எதுவெல்லாம் பரமாத்மாவிடம் சேர்க்க உதவுமோ அதுவெல்லாம் யோகந்தானே? “அவனுக்கு யோக காலம்; ‘வாருகிறான்’!” என்றால் என்ன அர்த்தம்? ஜாதகப்படி க்ரஹங்கள் நல்ல ஸ்தானங்களில் சேர்ந்த — சேர்க்கை பெற்று — இருப்பதாலேயே அவனுக்கு எல்லாம் நல்லதாக நடக்கின்றன என்று அர்த்தம். இப்படிப் பல விதமான சேர்க்கைகள் — யோகங்கள் இருந்தாலும் எது பரம உத்தமமான யோகம்? பரமாத்மாவுடன் சேர்வதுதானே? அதுதான் வேதத்தின் பரம தாத்பர்யம்.

Yogas Enunciated by Gita

Apart from detailing these three Yogas in this manner, He has also named the subject matter of each of the 18 chapters which are part of these, as Yogas.  Sankhya Yoga and Karma Yoga, respectively indicate Nivruthi and Pravruthi modes.  One of the chapters, viz., the 12^th chapter, is named as Bhakthi Yoga.  Apart from this, there are yogas, like Dhyana Yoga, Raja Vidya Yoga, Raja Kuhya Yoga, Vibhoothi Yoga, Purushothama Yoga etc., given as headings in the Gita, totalling 18 different yogas.

The title of the first chapter is Arjuna Vishadha Yoga, i.e., even the confusion of Arjuna is called as a Yoga.  If you ask me, whether Bhagawan himself gave titles to all these 18 chapters or was he not simply conversing with Arjuna and in which case, from where did these titles come, I will not be able to answer.  It is enough if we believe that Gita was spelt out by the Lord and that it has been passed on to us generations after generations.  If Vyasa, who compiled it, had added the titles, it is as good as done by Lord himself.  Vyasa was also an incarnation of Bhagawan Himself, an aspect of the Lord (Amsavathara).

Why did He call the confusion in the mind of Arjuna as Yoga? Only due to the mental confusion he had, he could think of the Self. That is why.  Till then he had fought and won against several people without any mental confusion so as to be even called “Vijayan”.  Here in Kurukshethra, when he saw his grandfather Bhishma, Acharya Dhrona, Cousins-Kauravas, etc., he got confused and started thinking what was the point in fighting against these people and winning back the kingdom and instead it would be better to resort to begging and eat. True, this disinterest was not borne out of attaining mental maturity.  While he had fought with great strength so many unknown strangers without thinking whether it was violence or non-violence, he got this immature thought, overwhelmed by attachment and bound by love, on seeing that the persons he was to fight were his own people. Bhagawan berates him, observing that he, who should be undertaking the righteous war, was behaving so stupid.  Still, is it not that only because he had this confusion, he could think of something else, Nivruthi, other than royal life?  Is it not that the Bhagawan’s teaching to him, the ultimate truth, (Gita) was also made possible because of this (confusion)?  Till such time, is it not that He (Krishna) could do only such acts like, getting him (Arjuna) married secretly to Subhadra and not open his mouth to give him any superior knowledge?  Since the confusion also somehow resulted in a good thing, it came to be called “Vishada Yoga”.

When Lord taught him, he referred to all the things which helped in purifying one’s mind and feel one with the Lord, as Yoga.  If the meaning of Yoga is merging or joining, are not all the things that help in reaching the Lord, Yoga?  What is the meaning, if one says, so and so is having a ‘yoga’ (gala) time and reveling?   It means that as per his horoscope, all the planets have come together in favorable positions and therefore all the good things are happening to him.  Even though there are so many such type of Yogas, which is the best yoga?  Is it not the merger with the Supreme Lord?  That is the objective of the Vedas.
