I will give you an example to illustrate how Aacharam is the diet food for the medicine called Dharmam.  Ancestral rituals (Pithru Tharpanam) are the common dharma for people belonging to all the castes. One should chant either the Vedic mantras or mantras in the form of slokas and offer gingelly seeds and water, thinking of the ancestors. This is the medicine for expiation of what we owe to our ancestors. While doing this one should have a bath, wear the dhoti as a kachcham, and perform the rituals facing South. These are the rules prescribed by Aacharam, the diet (pathiyam) for the above medicine. If one performs these rituals without having a bath, wearing the holy thread in the regular fashion, and facing North, the fruits of these rituals will not be realized. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
