புறம் என்று எடுத்துக்கொண்டால், ரொம்பவும் ஃபிலஸாஃபிகலாக, வேதாந்தமாகப் போகிறபோது எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் புறத்தில், வெளியில் இருப்பது சரீரம். அன்னமயகோசம் என்று ஐந்து கோசங்களில் அதைத்தான் ஆத்மாவுக்கு ரொம்ப தூரத்தில் வைத்துச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. அது எப்படிப் போனால் என்ன என்று ரொம்பவும் உதாஸீனமாகத்தான் மஹா ஞானிகள் இருந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அநேக மஹான்களைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப்படுகிறோம். மல மூத்ராதிகளைப் பூசிக்கொண்டு, புழுத்துப் போனதைத் தின்றுகொண்டு, ஸ்நானம் கிடையாது, பல் தேய்க்கிறதில்லை என்று, எங்கேயோ குப்பை கூளத்திலே கிடந்தார்கள் என்று. இதற்கெல்லாம் மாறாக ஒருத்தன் சரீர சுத்தியை இப்படியிப்படி உண்டாக்கிக் கொள்ள வேண்டும், ஆஹாரம் இப்படியிப்படி சுத்தமாயிருக்கணும், அவன் வஸிக்கின்ற இடத்தில் இப்படியாகப்பட்ட சுத்தமான அம்சங்களெல்லாம் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதையெல்லாம், ரொம்பவும் ‘புற’த்திலேயிருந்து கொண்டு ஆசார சாஸ்திரங்களில் நிறையச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. நாம் இருக்கிற நிலையில் இப்படிப் புறசுத்தியில் கண்டிப்பும் கறாருமாக இருந்து ஆரம்பித்தால்தான், அப்புறம் என்றைக்கோ ஒருநாள் அந்த ஞானிகளுடைய நிலைக்குப் போகலாம் என்பதற்காகவே, அதாவது முடிவிலே முழுக்க ஆத்ம லோகம் என்கிற அகவாழ்விலே சேர்கிறதை லக்ஷ்யமாகக் கொண்டே சரீரம், வீடு, சுற்றுப்புறம் முதலான புற விஷயங்களின் சுத்தத்திலிருந்து ஆரம்பித்து ஆசாரங்கள் விதிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்

If we talk of external things, according to the Vedanta (philosophical approach) this physical body is the most external thing. Of the five sheaths this physical body, identified as ‘Annayamaya Kosam’ – is the one farthest from the soul. Great souls have been careless about this body and its state. We have heard of many great souls, smeared by feces and urine, eating worm ridden food, and lying in rubbish heaps without having a bath or brushing their teeth. On the contrary, the rules of Aacharam instruct a lot about cleansing of oneself, purity of food, and the aspects of cleanliness in his place of abode and such ’external’ things. If only a person is strict in such matters of external cleanliness can he reach the state of those great souls one day.  It is only with this ideal of coming closer to the soul that the rules of Aacharam regarding the body, house, environment, and such external matters have been formed. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
