Gatam Maestro Sri Vinaayak Raam, revered Kanchi Paramachariyar as his Kula Deivam.
Once, Sri Vinaayak Raam got the great opportunity to perform at a concert in Athens. He was to be accompanied by Violin Vidwan L. Subramanyam and Tabla Vidwan Zakir Hussain in this grand concert.
Vinayak Raam had planned to reach Athens couple of days before the concert and L. Subramanyam and Zakir Hussain were to finish another concert in London and then join Vinayak Raam in Athens.
Vinaayak Raam had reached Athens as planned. Program coordinators received him with great respect and took him to the hotel, where he was supposed to be stay. After making sure, Vinaayak Raam was comfortable in the hotel, coordinators left.
Since it was a new place, unknown language, Vinaayak Raam felt lonely and thought of playing his gatam for some time. When he opened the box, he was shocked.
He started sweating even though it was an air-conditioned room. He didn’t know whether to scream or cry. He was devastated to see his gatam broken into pieces inside the box.
His heart broke, looking at the broken gatam. It is not easy, even, in India to find a good quality gatam immediately. Being in a foreign country, it would be next to impossible to find another gatam before the concert day. He could not move for some time, but, then, he composed himself and called his wife and explained her the situation and told her that he will cancel the program and come back home.
But, his wife asked him not to take any decisions at that point of time and told him that she will rush immediately to Kanchi matam and pray to Mahaperiyava. She assured him that Mahaperiyava’s blessings will definitely help solve the problem. She told him that the Lord whom we believe in will not fail us.
Vinaayak Raam took out a picture of Mahaperiyava and prayed to Him. He then called other accompanists and explained the problem to them too. They advised him to stay in the same place till they reach Athens. Vinaayak Raam kept praying to Mahaperiyava.
When Vinaayak Raam’s wife went to Kanchi matam, Periyava was in Mouna Vratham. She prostrated in front of Mahaperiyava and explained the situation with tears rolling down her eyes.
After listening to everything, Mahaperiyava just rolled a matai coconut (unpeeled coconut) to her. He did not say a word. She did not know what else to do and returned back home with the coconut. At the same time, in Athens, a great miracle was unfolding.
Violin Vidwan and Tabla Vidwan, when they reached Athens, they had a gatam in their hand. On seeing this, Vinaayak Raam was immensely happy and surprised too. He enquired how they got the gatam in such a faraway place from India.
They started narrating what happened – “When we were searching for a gatam in London, we found out that one person has a gatam. That person had got that gatam as a gift from a great vidwan when he had visited India some time back. But, that person refused to give the gatam to them as it was a special gift that he got from his favorite vidwan. Then, we asked him who the vidwan was and then came the reply that it was the great gatam player Vikku Vinaayak Raam. We were completely taken surprised. We then explained to him that it was Vikku Vinaayak Raam who is in trouble because of the broken gatam. He was very happy to share the gatam with them.”
Vinaayak Raam took the gatam and offered respects to the instrument. He found a small bit of paper rolled inside the gatam. It read – “The Lord whom you believe in will never fail you”.
These were the exact words told by his wife when he had called her earlier.
Vinaayak Raam understood it was only because of Mahaperiyava’s anugraham, he got the gatam that he had given as a gift to one of his fans, right on time. He prostrated to Mahaperiyava and offered his prayers and praNams.
