‘ஆசாரம்’ என்பதைத் தமிழிலே நேராக ‘ஒழுக்கம்’ என்று சொல்லிவிடலாம். “உயிரினும் ஓம்பப்படும்” என்று திருவள்ளுவர் எதைச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறாரோ, அப்படி நம் பிராணனைவிட உசந்ததாகக் கருதி எதை ரக்ஷிக்க வேண்டுமோ அந்த தர்ம வழியே ஆசாரம். தர்மம் என்கிறது அகம், புறம் எல்லாவற்றிலும் எல்லா அம்சங்களையும் தழுவுகிற விஷயமல்லவா? இங்கிலீஷில் ‘Character’ என்பதாக ஒருத்தனின் உள் ஸமாசாரமான குணத்தையும், ‘Conduct’ என்று அவனுடைய வெளி ஸமாசாரமான நடத்தையையும் சொல்கிறார்கள். ஆசாரம் என்பதும் ஒழுக்கம் என்பதும் காரெக்டர், கான்டக்ட் ஆகிய இரண்டையும் ஒன்றாக்கிச் சேர்த்துக் கொடுப்பது. இது வெறுமனே Morality, Ethics என்று சொல்கிற இஹ வாழ்க்கைக்கான நன்னெறிகளாக மட்டுமில்லாமல் பர லோகத்துக்கும் உதவுவதான காரியங்களை, ஸம்ஸ்காரங்களை, சின்னங்களை, விதி நிஷேதங்களை (இன்ன செய்யலாம், இன்ன செய்யக்கூடாது என்பவற்றை)யும் சொல்கிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்
Aacharam can be directly translated as ‘Ozhukkam or ‘Virtuous Conduct’ in Tamizh. The path of virtues which the Saint-Poet Thiruvalluvar extolled to be superior to our Life force itself should be protected by us realizing that it is dearer to us than our lives. This path of virtue is Aacharam, Dharmam. This embraces all things external and internal. In English language,  the word ‘character’ denotes an internal quality and the word ’conduct’ refers to his behavior which is external. Aacharam or virtue is a combination of character and conduct.
