ஒரு மதத்தின் எல்லா நெறிகளுமே அதன் ஆசாரந்தானென்றாலும், வெளி வாழ்க்கையில் அதன் கட்டுப்பாட்டுப்படி நடந்து கொண்டு, அதில் சொல்லியிருக்கிற வெளியடையாளங்களான சின்னங்கள் முதலியவற்றை மேற்கொண்டு நடந்து காட்டுவதே குறிப்பாக ஆசாரம், ஆசாரம் என்று வழங்குகிறது. ஆனால் ஆசாரம் என்பது முழுக்க வெளி விஷயந்தான் என்று நினைத்து விட்டால் அது தப்பு. வெளி ஸமாசாரங்களாலேயே உள் ஸமாசாரங்களை, உள்ளத்தை உயர்த்திக் கொள்ள உதவுகிறதுதான் ஆசாரம். அதோடுகூட நேராக உள்ளத்தின் ஸமாசாரங்களையும், வாழ்க்கை நெறிகளையுங்கூட ஆசார சாஸ்திரங்களிலே சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்
Though all the virtues of a religion constitute its Aacharam, the term has come to refer to a life strictly virtuous adopting all those symbols or external signs prescribed by the religion. But it is wrong to assume that Aacharam pertains only to the external. Aacharam helps in elevating the internal state through external actions.
