Tiruvengadu Kshetram – finally visited!

Tiruvengadu – a great kshetram is a place that I’ve been planning to visit for quite some time but had a chance only in this trip. Great kshetram for Bhudan (Mercury) with very large temple with 3 tanks and the only place where we can see Lord Agoramurthi. There is a legend behind this avatar of Lord Shiva who came to kill a asura….Beautiful temple….It is believed that Sun God Suriyan, Moon God Chandran, Lord Indiran, Airavatam, Mercury God Budhan have worshiped Lord Shiva at this place. Thiruvengadu Swetharanyeswarar Temple is considered to be the Adi Chidambaram (First Chidambaram) because Lord Shiva was said to have danced first at this temple before dancing at Chidambaram. There is a beautiful idol of Lord Natarajar found in this temple. And Lord Vishnu is seen near to the shrine of Lord Natarajar as in the Chidambaram temple.

Saint Valmiki refers to this temple in the Ramayana as swetharaneyeswarar killed yema at Thiruvengadu in the same manner Rama killed Kara & Dushana. This is the most popular among the six sacred places considered equivalent to kasi kshetra.

The temple has separate shrines for the three forms (moorthi) of Lord Siva, Swetharanyeswarar, Nataraja and Agoramurthi.

The four saints namely St. Gnana Sambandar, St. Appar and St. Sundarar and St. Manickavasagar have sancitified this temple by hymns.

This is the only temple where Lord Siva is worshipped in his most ferocious and the terrific one, of the 64 forms of Lord Siva as Agoramurthi.

This is the place where Pattinaththar, the author of the 11th holy scriptures (Thirumurai) attained benediction (Sivadeekshai).

Right opposite to the temple is a yajurveda Patasala & Mahaperiyava temple managed by Advocate Sri Venkatasubramanian. A big hall for Mahaperiyava with lots of photos of Periyava – some are rare….This hall is very similar to sama veda Patasala at sthoobi in Kanchi (built by Sri Simpson Vaitha mama). Mahaperiyava sitting on the 2nd floor like a Maharaja in a huge mena…..Kaana Kan koti vendum!!!

It was bit late in the evening I visited this place – so the lighting was not that good. Hence the photos are slightly darker than I wanted to…

Hara Hara Sankara Jaya Jaya Sankara!

  1. Happen to read this narration today after 5 years if posting. One small correction as I know it, Vaithi mama’s contribution takes after this Mahaperiyava temple at Thiruvencaudu and not the otherwise. (As an aside info Mahaperiava temple at Thiruvencaudu itself modeled based on TTD at T.Nagar) . Above info conveyed by Adv K V himself in his short discourses.

  2. Dear Sri Mahesh
Please visit the Athistanam of 57th Peedathipathi Sri Sri Paramasivendra Sarawathi whihc is located in Raja Saraboji Agraharam in Thiruvengadu which is one km form the temple.

Sri Parama Sivendral is Guru of Sri Sadasiva Bramendral and also Parama Guru of Sri Bothendral of Govinda puram.

You can see the vibration there with calm atmosphere.

Sri sivan sir has spent many days there.

I had been there where veda parayanam was conducted by one of my friend from Sankara Jayanthi day and came back to Chennai today.

    • I knew about Sri Sar and this adhistanam….I went very late in the evening and it was getting late to return….So I had to miss this place and will plan during my next trip….

      Thanks >

  3. Thank you for sharing. Hara Hara Shankara

  4. Thank you for sharing these nice pictures.

  5. dear Mahesh, Glad you had darshan at Thiruvengadu. THE ADHISTANAM OF PARAMA GURU OF MAHASWAMIGAL SRI SUDHARSANA MAHADEVENDHRA SARASWATHI SWAMIGAL is located in a paddy field near Thiruvengadu. Sri Ravi and Sri J.G.murthy arranged Ekadasa athirudhram and Sahasra Chandi Homam at this holy kshetra ten years ago.Needless to say it was a mega event performed at a distant location lacking in all infra facilities.I was fortunate to have darshan.

Sri Ravi has arranged Athirudhram andchandi homam andRiksamhitha Homam at Rameswaram during middle of May at the adhistanam site of 56th pontiff of Kanchi Mutt SRI SADHASIVA SARVAGNA SADASIVA BHODENDRAL.

Another information about Thiruvengadi. The family of Sri Subramania Ganapadigal of Thiruvengadu is conducting Maha Rudhra Homam every year for the past eight decades. Next year event is proposed to be held at THIRUKADAIYUR during Tamil Month of Masi. Sri Chandran Son of Subramania Ganapadigal is arranging the event.

  6. Thanks for sharing a useful information about the Kshetra and more so about the small temple dedicated to Mahaperiyava.
During my recent visit to Govindapuram I saw a temple for Mahaperiyava built by a Karnataka Devotee and one Kamakshi Mami.
This temple is unique in the sense that while Mahaperiyava occupies the central position , all the other 67 Acharyas are individually represented by Banalingams around Mahaperiyava’s Shrine.
It was said that all the 67 Banalingams were collected from Narmada river o the same day.
This complex also has a Shrine for Mettur Swamigal.
A beautiful temple for Mahaperiyava and a must-visit place for His devotees.

  7. Jaya Jaya Sankara, Hara Hara Sankara. Pahi Pahi sri Maha prabho Janakiraman. Nagapattinam,

  8. My father is born in THIRUVENGADU and his full name is THIRUVENGADU SUBRAMANIAN RAJAGOPAL (T.S.R.Iyer) Mangamadam agraharam. RAJA

  9. This kshetram also has the Rudra Padam where pitru karyams can be performed just as we do in Vishnu Padam at Gaya.

The adhishtanam of the 57th Acharyal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Paramasivendra Saraswathi Swamigal is located here. He is the Paramaguru of Sri Bhagavanama Bhodendral.
