நன்றாக ஸித்தாந்தங்களை அறிந்து தர்க்கம் பண்ணி நிலைநாட்டுகிற ஸாமர்த்தியத்தையும் அதீத அநுபவத்தோடு பெற்றிருந்த சில மஹான்களும் குலாசாரத்துக்கு வேறேயாகப் போயிருக்கிறார்கள். பிற்காலத்தில் ஹரதத்த சிவாசாரியார் என்று சைவத்தில் உயர்ந்த ஸ்தானம் பெற்ற ஒருவர் கஞ்சனூர் என்ற ஊரில் வைஷ்ணவராகப் பிறந்தவர்தான். ஆனால் அவர் கொதிக்கிற மழுவைக் கையில் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு சிவ உத்கர்ஷத்தை [மேன்மையை] ஸ்தாபித்து, சைவராக மாறியிருக்கிறார். திருமழிசையாழ்வார் என்கிறவர் சிவ வாக்கியர் என்றே பெயர் வைத்துக் கொண்டு, சிவபரமாகப் பாடின ஸித்தர்தான் என்றும், அப்புறம் பன்னிரண்டு ஆழ்வார்களிலேயே ஒருத்தராகிவிடுகிற அளவுக்குப் பெரிய விஷ்ணு பக்தராய்ப் போய்விட்டார் என்றும் கதை இருக்கிறது. இதெல்லாம் ஜெனரல் ரூல் இல்லை எக்ஸெப்ஷன்தான். அது ரொம்பவும் அபூர்வமாகத்தான் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இப்போது அதை நமக்கு எக்ஸாம்பிள் என்று எடுத்துக் கொண்டால் எக்ஸெப்ஷன்தான் ரூல் என்றாகிவிடும்! – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்

There were saints who had the capability to argue successfully the philosophical stances they had taken though they had also undergone unusual experiences and they had also broken the traditional rules. The person who later became famous as Haradutta Sivachariyar in the Saivite tradition was actually born as a Vaishnavite in Kanjanur. But he held a red hot lance (mazhu) in his hand to establish the greatness of Saivism and became its follower.  Similarly there is a story that it was Siva Vaakkiya Sidhdhar who sang on Siva who became a staunch Vishnu devotee, so much so that he came to be included among the twelve Azhwars as Thirumazhisai Azhwar.
