பகவானே என்ன சொன்னார், ரொம்ப நிர்தாக்ஷிண்யமாகத்தானே சொன்னார், அப்படித்தான் நாமும் குலாசாரத்தை ஒரு நாளும் விடப்படாது என்று சொல்லிவிடுவோமென்று தோன்றுகிறது. குலதர்மம் என்பதற்காக யுத்தம் பண்ணிப் பிதாமஹர், பந்து, மித்ரர்களையெல்லாம் கொல்லுவதாவது என்று வில்லைப் போட்டுவிட்டு உட்கார்ந்த அர்ஜுனனிடம் பகவான் இப்படித்தானே சொன்னார். “உனக்கு சாஸ்திரம் இந்த ஸ்வதர்மத்தைத்தானே கொடுத்திருக்கிறது? ஒரு பிராம்மணனிடம் போய் நான் ‘சண்டை போடு’ என்று சொல்வேனா? உன்னை ஈஸ்வரன் க்ஷத்திரியனாகப் படைத்திருக்கிறானோ இல்லையோ? அப்படியானால் அந்தக் குலாசாரப்படிதான் நீ பண்ண வேண்டுமென்றே அர்த்தம். ‘அதன்படி பண்ணினால் குலமே போயிடும்; குலஸ்த்ரீகள் பாழாய்ப் போவார்கள்’ என்றெல்லாம் நீ அழுது அடம் பண்ணிப் பிரயோஜனமில்லை. பலனைப் பார்க்காதே. ஈஸ்வரன் இப்படி ஜன்மா கொடுத்தானென்றால் அதற்கு சாஸ்திரம் எந்த வழியைக் காட்டுகிறதோ அப்படித்தான் போகணும். மற்றவர்களுக்குக் கஷ்டத்தை உண்டாக்குகிறோமே என்று பார்க்காதே. அல்லது உனக்கே இதனால் கஷ்டம், மனவேதனை, guilty conscience இருந்தாலும் இதுகளையும் பார்க்காதே’ என்று இப்படிச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டே போய், “இதற்கெல்லாம் மேலாக உன் பிராணனே போகிறதா? போகட்டும்! ஸ்வதர்மத்தின்படியே இருந்து கொண்டிருந்தால், அதற்காகச் செத்தாலும் மேல்,

ஸ்வதர்மே நிதனம் ச்ரேய:”

என்று ஒரே முடிவாகச் சொல்லிவிட்டார்!

“உன்னுடைய ஸ்வதர்மம் அதாவது பிறப்பாலேற்பட்ட குலதர்மம் குணமில்லாததாக, நல்ல அம்சங்களில்லாததாக இருந்து, இன்னொரு குலதர்மம் உசத்தியான அநுஷ்டானங்களுள்ளதாக இருந்தாலுங்கூட, நீ அதை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளப்படாது. ஸ்வதர்மந்தான் ச்ரேயஸ்” என்று பகவான் தீர்மானிக்கச் சொல்லி,

ச்ரேயாந் ஸ்வதர்மோ விகுண: பரதர்மாத் ஸ்வநுஷ்டிதாத்

என்று அடித்துச் சொல்லி, அதற்கும் மேலே கடுமையாக

ஸ்வதர்மே நிதநம் ச்ரேய:

“தன் குலதர்மத்திலே இருந்து கொண்டு சாவே ஏற்பட்டாலும் சிரேயஸ்”:

பரதர்மோ பயாவஹ:

“பிறத்தியான் தர்மம் மஹா பயங்கரமாய் முடியும் என்கிறார்.

ஸரி, பகவானே சொன்ன இந்த முடிவை அது எத்தனை கடுமையாய்த் தோன்றினாலும் பகவான் சொன்னதென்பதால் அதற்கு மேல் க்ஷேமமில்லையென்று நாமும் முடிவாகச் சொல்லிவிடலாமென்றால், முடியவில்லை. ஏன்? பூர்வாசாரத்தை விடலாமா என்று கேட்கிறவர்களின் இன்னொரு கேள்விக்குப் பதில் சொல்லியாக வேண்டியிருப்பதால் முடியவில்லை. இதுவும் நானே சொல்லிக் கொடுத்ததை வைத்துக்கொண்டு என்னையே வளைக்கிற கேள்விதான்! – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்

On deep thought, one feels that one has to firmly state that ancestral traditions should not be given up. After all, Lord Krishna Himself had stated this ruthlessly in Srimad Bhagawat Gita. This is precisely the same advice that Lord Krishna gave to Arjuna who flung down his bow and arrow and sat down unable to bear the thought of fighting and killing his Grandfather Bhishma and his relatives because battle was a part of his tradition. The Lord stated to Arjuna, “This is the action prescribed to you by the Saastraas. Will I go and ask a Brahmin to fight? The supreme Power has destined you to be born as a Kshatriya which means that you have to act as a Kshatriya will do. There is no point in your lamenting that if you act according to this family tradition, your entire clan will be destroyed and the ladies belonging to your clan will be ruined. Do not bother about the fruits of the action. If Eswara has destined your birth to be so, you have to follow the path which the sastras have shown in such a situation Do not think about the suffering you are causing to the others. Even if you suffer in the process and mental agony and guilty conscience gnaw at you, do not bother. Above all, even if you have to die in the process you should not give up your Swadharma” – this is clearly stated by Lord Krishna. He firmly states that even if the traditions a person has to follow by virtue of his birth are inferior in nature to any other set of traditions, he still has to follow what is prescribed by the circumstance of his birth. Even if one faces death in the process of following those traditions it will add to one’s glory and imitating the traditions of another person will have only disastrous consequences.  But it does not seem satisfactory to take a decision based on this stern statement of Lord Krishna and recommend that there is no other choice for us in the matter. This is because I have to answer another question raised by those who seek to know whether they can give up their ancestral traditions.
