‘சிகாம், புண்ட்ரம், ஸூத்ரம்’ என்ற மூன்று விஷயங்களும் ஹிந்து மதத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவைதான். மதாந்தரங்களில் இவையில்லை. ஆனதால் ஹிந்து மதத்துக்குள்ளேயே வெவ்வேறாயுள்ள பிரிவுகளை ஒப்புக் கொண்டு, இவற்றில் பிறந்தவர்கள் தங்கள் முன்னோரின் பிரிவுக்குரிய ஆசாரத்தையே பின்பற்ற வேண்டும் என்று ஸ்பஷ்டமாக ஏற்படுகிறது.

அப்போது ஒரு கேள்வி வருகிறது. ஹிந்து மதம் வேத மதம்தான். அதற்கு முதல் ஆதாரம் ஸ்ருதி என்ற வேதம்; அடுத்தபடியான ஆதாரம் அந்த வேதத்தை ஆதாரமாகக் கொண்டே அதில் சுருக்கமாகவும், மறைமுகமாகவும், குறிப்பாகவும் (hint-ஆகவும்) சொல்லியுள்ளவற்றை விளக்கி வைக்கிற ஸ்ம்ருதி என்ற தர்ம சாஸ்திரம். ஆக, வேதம்தான் [இந்த மதத்துக்கு] மூச்சு. இந்த வேதத்தின் பரம தாத்பரியம் என்ன என்பதிலே ஏற்பட்ட வித்யாஸத்தால்தான் இதற்குள் பல பிரிவுகள் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. த்வைதம் என்று ஒருத்தர் நிர்தாரணம் பண்ணுகிறார்; அத்வைதம் என்று இன்னொருத்தர், இரண்டுமில்லை விசிஷ்டாத்வைதம், சுத்தாத்வைதம், த்வைதாத்வைதம் என்றெல்லாம் பலபேர் பல விதமாக முடிவு பண்ணுகிறார்கள். வைதிக மதத்தில் எல்லா தெய்வமும் ஒரே பரமாத்மாதான் என்று ஒருத்தர் சொல்கிறார். இன்னொருத்தர் விஷ்ணுதான் பரமாத்மா மற்ற தெய்வங்களில்லை என்கிறார். வேறொருவர் இதே மாதிரி சிவனைச் சொல்கிறார். எல்லாரும் தாங்கள் சொல்வதுதான் வேதத்தின் ஸரியான அபிப்ராயமென்கிறார்கள், ‘த்வைதம், அத்வைதம் என்றெல்லாம் பெயர் கொடுத்தாலும் இது sub-title தான். நாங்கள் வேதமதம் என்பதுதான் ‘title’ என்று அவரவரும் சொல்கிறார்கள். இதிலிருந்துதான் கேள்வி வருகிறது. வேத மதத்தை விட்டு வேறு மதத்துக்குப் போனால்தான் தப்பா? பதிதனாகிறானா? அல்லது ஒரே வேத மதத்திலேயே இருக்கிற ஒரு பிரிவிலிருந்து அதிலே பிறந்தவன் இன்னொரு பிரிவுக்குப் போனாலும் பதிதனாகிற தோஷம் வருமா? – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்

The three topics earlier discussed- Sikaam (tuft), Pundram (the religious mark on the forehead) and Sootram (the holy thread) – all belong to the Hindu religion. They do not exist in other religions. Because they are not rules prescribed by any specific basic religious text, it is clear that it is the practice for the people belonging to the various sects in the religion to follow the traditions laid down by their ancestors.

A question arises immediately. The Hindu religion is a Vedic religion. Sruti or the Vedas constitute its primary foundation. The secondary foundation is the Dharma Saastraas or Smruti which are based on the Vedas themselves and provide clarity to what has been said concisely, indirectly or hinted at in the Vedic texts by elaborating upon them. So Vedas infuse Hindu religion with life. The various sects have arisen based on the different interpretations about the ultimate philosophy or Truth of the Vedas. One declares it to be Dwaitam while the other unequivocally states that it is Adwaitam. The third person does not agree with both the conclusions and is firm that it is Visishtadwaitam. People come to different conclusions like Suddhadwaitam and Dvaitaadwaitam. One person declares that the there is only one divine supreme according to Vedic religion. Another person states that Vishnu is the divine supreme and there are no other Gods. The third person accords Siva this supreme position. Everybody claims that their opinion is the correct one. Though different nomenclatures like Dwaitam and Adwaitam are given, everyone declares that these are sub titles and ultimately theirs is the Vedic religion. Is a person a ‘fallen one’ only if he starts following some other religion other than the Vedic religion or is he equally guilty when he leaves one sect of the Hindu religion and starts following some other sect of the same Hindu religion? – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
