Importance of Sandhyavandanam and other Key Samskarams

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – One of our blog readers has penned an article on the importance of performing Trikaala Sandhyvandanam and other key anushtanams that we need to adhere to on a daily basis. With base reference to Maha Periyava the devotee has quoted from various Ithihasa/Puranas on the significance of doing these samskaras. Let’s take this as an inspiration and do the fullest possible. Many Jaya Jaya Sankara to the devotee for the share. Ram Ram

Sri Vedavyaasaaya Namah! Sri Ganapathaye Namah!!

Maha Periyava’s main goal was to make sure that every Brahmin knows the Vedas and wanted each Brahmin to spend at least an hour daily for learning it.

For the next generation to get interest in the Vedas, we ourselves must be worthy.

We will quote from Itihasa Puranas on the importance of Vedas. Sri Bhishma mentions how a Brahmin becomes worthy. He mentions various qualifications for such a Brahmana.

1. A Brahmin who does Sandhyavandanam thrice a day.

2. A Brahmin who knows the importance and meaning of Gayathri (grasping the meaning of the whole
Sandhyavandanam & all it’s Angas)

3. A Brahmin who observes vows sincerely. (fasting like Ekadasi)
Bhishma mentions many other qualifications but we shall stick to this for the time being. Let’s remember what Maha Periyava told about this.

We must set an example for the coming generation, we are in the virtual temple of Maha Periyava. This temple (Alayam Karuna Alayam) is going to help us in the gigantic task.

This is a Nithyakarma (daily duty), there are many Samskaras for communities but the Brahmin community has a special task which will multiply the punya and phalan of good deeds done, and that special task is Sandhyavandanam.

We need not be worried that we haven’t studied the Vedas. There is hope, two objects were found to be equal to or greater than the Vedas themselves. We have full access to those objects.  These two events happened during Mahabharata.

1. Mahabharata – The fifth Veda

In former days, having placed the four Vedas on one side and the Bharata on the other, these were weighed in the balance by the celestials assembled for that purpose. And as the latter weighed heavier than the four Vedas with their mysteries, from that period it hath been called in the world Mahabharata (the great Bharata). Being esteemed superior both in substance and gravity of import it is denominated Mahabharata on account of such substance and gravity of import. He who knows its meaning is saved from all his sins.

2. Gayathri Maha Manthram

In the same manner, Gayathri was found to be superior.

So, don’t worry about other things. So, even in these days, Sandhyavandanam thrice a day is not that difficult. Recite a little of Mahabharata you know, be it Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu/Shiva Sahasranamam.

The merits of chanting Gayatri and reciting Mahabharata are immeasurable, but never neglect Trikaala Sandhyavandanam.

Do whatever you have to. Learn Sandhyavandanam, Brahma Yagnam & Samidhadhanam or Auspasana at any cost. Learn these from a proper Vaideeka who knows all these well. Fall at his feet and offer a good amount of money, do Abhishekham at the temples, do everything. Learn these and PERFORM  THESE. The mantras of Upanayana, Sandhyavandanam and Vivaham have been assimilated from many great Smritis and Samhitas. A mantra from Upanayana asks for the boy to be as brilliant as the Rishi from his Gotra. There may be a price for a major surgery but these Samskaras are just priceless.

When Yuddhisthra asks Bhishma, what are the two things essential for the world ? Bhishma replies that Brahmanas learning Vedas and worshipping of cows are the essential things. If Brahmanas do Samskaras properly, then all the people will follow their Dharmam. If a cow is happy, then the whole locality is happy.

All the 33 crore Devathas reside inside a Brahmana who has done Veda Adhyayanam and also inside a Gho Matha (Cow) – that is why, “Gomatha engal Kulamatha”.

Thousands of obstacles pop up but Maha Periyava has shown several ways to execute those tasks without any obstacles.

In this articles, the main aim is to highlight the importance of Sandhyavandanam, so we shall employ certain tactics given by Rishis –

1.Snanam

2.Reading Panchangam

3.Yagnam

Snanam

One Nithyakarma is Snanam, Snanam means using river water to bathe, or at least using water from the well. In cities, we don’t have the means to do so. So, Rishis gave a new way for better purification, this is to chant Bhagawan nama while bathing (like Ganga, Shiva, Narayana etc.) Chanting Bhagawan nama during Snanam also has special phalan and cleanses great sins.

Again, the above mentioned one is Varuna Snanam (bathing with water), there is another Snanam – Mantra Snanam which comes in Sandhyavandanam, which starts with Apo Hishta. So, we are able to do three types of Snanams a day, Varuna + Bhasma + Mantra.  Varuna is the best one for purification.

So, even if one is unable to get water, one must do Prokshanam and wear Vibhuthi or their respective Tilakam before doing Sandhyavandam.

There are lots of Snanams mentioned in the scriptures but these will suffice.

2. Reading Panchangam

Snanam will be over then we need a divine intervention for the day to be a smooth and happy one. So, many obstacles will come around. But one of the most practice has been neglected in our families. This is reading Panchangam, this is must be done before a bath where Sankalpam is taken with the tithi, nakshatra etc. But one must read the Panchangam in whichever way possible.

The panchangam is read every day before the deity in Tirumala temple and even Maha Periyava made someone to read out the panchangam everyday in Sri Matam.

This practice is an important one even for Thirupathi Perumal and Sri Matam as well.

The phalan of knowing the Pancha Angas (5 parts of the calendar) is this:

Tithi : Brings Iswaryam – prosperity. (like Ekadashi or Panchami)
Day : Increases our life span. (like Somavasaram-Monday, Bhriguvasaram-Friday)
Nakshatra : Eliminates all the sins done on that day. (like Krittika, Rohini)
Karana : Gives karya siddhi – success in all endeavors. ( like Bava, Balava)
Yoga : Gives desired Bhogams – getting whatever we desire on that day. (Ayushman, Harshana)

If one reads the panchangam from Kaliyuga till the end, no obstacles shall trouble him on that day.

So, all make it a habit to read the Panchangam in our house preferably in front of a deity. Make sure that all the relatives know the pancha angas, it just take 2 mins.

Yagnam

The most important duty is doing Yagnam.

In Yaksha Prashnam of Mahabharatam,

Yama Dharmarajan – Kah Sarvabhutham Atithihi ?
Yuddhisthra – Agnihi Sarvabhutham Atithihi.

Yama Dharmarajan asks who is the guest for all creatures?

Yuddhisthra replies Agni Bhagawan is the guest for all creatures.

Maha Periyava has spoken about the importance of Athithi Bhojanam once during  Maha Shivarathri (Sivagami Aachi and Kumaresan Chettiar story). Agni is not the Athithi for our family but for the whole world, that is why Yagnams hold a special status.

So, we can understand why Yagnams have a special power, Agni or Subramanya is the most important God, he is the guest – Athithi for all the creatures, if he is satisfied, all living creatures around the person who does Yagnam will be prosperous.

Yagnams also have different types –

Simple ones that we can follow are:

  1. Brahma Yagnam –

This is included in the Pancha Maha Yagnas, even yagnams like Rajasuya or Aswamedha is not given the prefix “Maha”. Brahma Yagnam’s phalan is very huge. All you need is just water and ten minutes. (chant atleast a small part of the Vedas, with regular Sandhyavandanam, any Veda sukta can be learnt easily, if not chant Gayathri Japam.)This is a boon given to us by our Rishis, at least on holidays, one must perform this without fail. One more thing, Pithru Tharpanam in Brahma Yagnam should be performed by all, even who have parents. Maha Periyava has mentioned about this in Deivathin Kural. We do this tharpanam for our Veda ancestors. Those who do Amavasya Tharpanam have an extra set of mantras while doing Pitri tharpanam. It was Pithrus who helped Bhishma  and their blessings are very important. Please ask your family Vaadhiyar about this, Pithrus are the ones who make sure that your family has good progeny. This is a simple way to please the Pithrus. This has Deva, Rishi, and Pithru tharpanams. So, a debt that a Brahmana owes to his Rishis or Devas or Pithrus is easily repayed through Brahma Yagnam.

Chanting whatever Veda you know will boost the phalan but try to learn this from a Vaideeka, don’t chant Vedas without swaras. If you do not know Vedas, chant as Gayathri Japam as much possible.

Even this chanting with swaras is important in Sandhyavandanam, still a few among you might be unaware of the special status of  Brahma Yagnam. Learn the swaras well then refer a book but don’t start with a book.

    2. Sandhyavandanam

Why add Sandhyavandanam in Yagnam??

Maha Periyava told this is Jnana, Karma and Bhakti yoga combined. A subtle hint was left by him, he told us to do it             with Sraddha, Bhakthi and do it correctly.

Ummachi Thatha has left a subtle hint for us to dig deeper and analyze that for greater phalan.

Many of us do Sandhyavandanam, but still some of us are doing it very hastily.

A few might feel why am I doing it? If angas like Angavandanam & Pranayamam are done correctly, you won’t get                 such feelings.

Shortcut for getting Yagnam phalan – Be sincere, be honest, be deligent and thus Dharma is well guarded. So, doing
Sandhyavandanam with sincerity will give more punya. Even if you do only the important parts, do those sincerely.

If you know the proper way of doing Sandhyavandanam, you won’t stop it at any cost. Why jump straight into
Gayathri ? Apasthambar has given Achamanam and Angavadanam, and all other parts.

Achamanam

If Achamanam is done with all the mentioned instructions. Body, mind and Atma are purified. Achyuta, Anantha and
Govinda will eliminate all kinds of diseases.

Anga Vandanam(Kesava Narayana)

If this is done properly, no disease will affect us if we say Bhagawan Nama and touch our body parts. Please don’t
do this carelessly.

Use the appropriate fingers correctly. One more small correction, we must say Kesava not Kesavaa. In Sanksrit, if we
say Kesavaa, it means Lord Kesava is far away. Marichan shouts Lakshmanaa, not Lakshmana. (Sambhodhana
Prathama of any Shabdha in Sanskrit).

Like Damodara not Damodaraa. Although, this is not a big mistake, don’t alter Sandhyavandam, this is not Bhakthi
Yoga only, Jnana + Karma also.

Kesava is the Lord of Marghazi month, Narayana for Thai. Bhisma has Periyava mentioned this. Chant as much as
Narayana nama in Thai & Damodara in Karathigai. 12 names correspond to the 12 months of the year. Do this
properly, every month of the year will be a blissful one.

Pranayaama-

प्राणायामं प्रत्याहारंनित्यानित्य विवेकविचारम् ।जाप्यसमेतसमाधिविधानंकुर्ववधानं महदवधानम् ॥ ३०॥

Bhaja Govindam verse 30 states that “Regulate the flow of Prana remaining unaffected by the external world.
Discriminate between the real and the illusion. Chant Bhagwan nama and calm the turbulent mind. PERFORM
THESE WITH CARE, EXTREME CARE.”

Sri Adi Sankara Bhagawath Padhal, even in his avatar as Maha Periyava wanted us to perform this practice properly.

Please don’t hold your nose and recite the mantras, pranayaama means HOLDING YOUR BREATH. Maha Periyava        himself asked has not to do “Nasikayaamam”. You can’t inhale and talk likewise reciting mantra isn’t possible. Learn this from a Guru. Don’t learn this from people who don’t do Sandhyavandanam, they will confuse everything.
If you do this properly, no disease will trouble you & memory power will be sharp.

Gayathri –

You all will be aware of this great mantra. Let us view this from the Ayurvedic view. Before Gayatri, we chant Avahanam, in that Ojosi… the mantra has a deep meaning. Ojo + Asi = Ojosi, you are my Ojas. Then Sahosi…, Balamasi, Brajosi, you are my Ojas, you are my brilliance, you are my strength, you are my luster.

Now, here is the explaination only about Ojas.

Ojas is not mentioned in modern medicine, perhaps it will be too late to understand some things. Ojas is important for us and this is a secret energy booster for both the mind and body.

Ojas is said to be the substanial essence of all the seven Dhatus – Rasa, Raktha, Mamsa, Majja, Medhas, Asthi, Sandhi and Shukra (Dhatu – parts which is said to nourish the body in various ways) If you know Skanda Guru Kavacham, you can relate to these.

Ojas can be depleted due to anxiety, long travel, thinking a lot, physical exertion, hunger, anger etc. The body will become dry and causes confusions, reducing the skin’s complexion and confidence is lost.

Milk is one of the many ways to tackle this but the best way is Gayatri Devi, a person doing Gayatri Japa will have good mental and physical strength. If Ojas is restored, the person is ever successful. Brahma Tejas will increase only if ojas is consistent. That is why the Deva addressed Gayatri as ojas personified.

Do all parts of Sandhyavandanam correctly, the merit increases if done sincerely, Yagnam phalan is gained. Also, all the sins are destroyed and any Navagraha Dosha won’t affect the person doing the morning and evening Sandhi as we do Navagraha Deva Tharpanam as part of Sandhyavandanam. Madhyanam is special, that’s why Brahma Yagnam is done after that.

If these are done correctly, you can go for other Yagnams.

How many times to do Sandhyavandanam ?

Three times, no exemptions.. Remember, Dharmo Rakshathi Rakshitah.

धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः

It is said that when a person does Bhoo Dhanam {Dhanam is also Dharmam ;)}, Bhudevi will provide that person everything in the world like a mother providing breast milk and whateever the child wants. So, Veda Matha i.e., Gayatri , will make us more efficient. Gayatri bestows Ojas, Jnanam, brilliance, Tejas, Vidya and makes us more efficient than the others. Gayatri is the dharmam who protects us and we protect the whole world by chanting Gayatri, you can think of any God during Japam. Recollect Maha Periyava doing abhishekam with milk for Chandramouleeshwara, our heart just melts. With the right pronunciation, meditating on any God will be very easy although it may take a few weeks.

Start doing Sandhyavandanam, lots of problems will occur but these pariharams will decimate the obstacles. This is what Maha Periyava has told in Deivathin Kural. Will power is important at all times, once you realize the phalan, you won’t stray away but Kali Yuga is bad, be on guard.

With regular Sandhyavandanam, Vedas can be mastered easily. Brahmopadesham must be done with proper care. Sanskrit knowledge is important otherwise Sandhyavandanam will be tough, you have the Rishis’ blood, how can you not master Sandhyavandanam?

सत्यमेव जयते नानृतं, Satyam alone triumphs, not falsehood.

Satyam is powerful than 1000 Asvamedha Yagnams – Mahabharatam. Satyam Advaitam, Satyam Sandhyavandanam. Sri Rama Jayam.

So, strive for the Satyam, strive for Loka Kshemam.

  1. As per sandhyavandanam books, achamanam should not be done facing west. So for evening SV, what are the directions we have to face for following:
    1. Argyam ?
    2. Gayathri Japam (It is stated that if it is already sunset , we should face east otherwise it should be west)
    3. All other mantras

To keep it simple, can we adopt following for evening SV:
    1. Always sit facing east and do all mantras
    2. Gayathri Japam (if it is already sunset , face east otherwise face west)

Correct me if am wrong here. Apologies for my ignorance.

    thanks,

    • Sri Gurubyo Namah! Hari Om!

There is nothing wrong in asking for knowledge rather than reeling under ignorance.

Sandhyavandana Sampradayam differs from region to region, State to State in Bharatavarsha. The best thing is to follow your father and forefathers. Since you asked a few questions, let me share my opinion (I am not the authority, but I have been doing SV, 3 times in a day for years).

For evening SV, Achamanam and Adityadi Tharpanams towards North and Argyam and Japa towards West. Rest all towards North.

Some people differ from this as per their Sampradayam. You must follow your Sampradayam that exists already. Otherwise the above is also advisable.

For Madyanikam, Achamanam, Argyam and Adityadi Tharpanams towards North and Japa towards East.

For morning SV, all towards East only.

Achamanam should never do facing West, it is only East and North.

You may consult your Veettu Vadhyar for best advice, otherwise you follow the above.

Jaya Jaya Shankara… Hara Hara Shankara…. Hari Om.

      • thanks a lot for your quick response. That helps a lot. Really appreciate your time.

        thanks,
        Sriram

  2. can we pour brahma yagnam water to tulsi plant. Please clarify this.

    • This is a very relevant question. I would also like to know its answer please. [If I can hazard a guess, yes, we can. But I may be wrong. Therefore, we require an answer from an authoritative source or at least somebody who knows or has read or heard about it].

      • I have heard that the water from sandhya vandanam and brahma yagnam should be poured on the ground so it evaporates towards the sun. The water should go towards aditya rather than lakshmi devi (tulasi). This is the method per dharmashastra or so i have heard from Veda Gosham youtube channel.

      • Thank you so much. This is more convincing and satisfactory.

      • Respected sir , in USA its tough to do outside house , so water from sandhya vandanam and brahma yagnam cannot be poured on the ground . I can only pour on the plate and then put the water to the ground .. Is that ok ?

      • That’s perfectly okay. But the plate should not be a steal one. It can be one of wood, copper, brass, silver, or gold [if one can afford it]! Bronze is also not allowed.

  3. 4. While reading a book on Chanakya (Kautilya), I came across a mention that he used to do his Sandhyavandanam with 5 different vessels, in lieu of the Panchapathram. That brings me to my next question. Is it required to have multiple vessels, given that after partaking of water for Achamanam, the remaining water might become echal, hence unfit for giving as Arghyam?

    • Sri Gurubyo Namah. Sri Hari, you don’t need five different vessels as Chanakya used to use for performing SV. Remember, we are not of his age period nor we are of his level of knowledge, hence we stick to the ‘Panachapatram’ that is presently prescribed to us. Had any such requirement was mandatory for us, Maha Periva would have uttered in any of His Upanyasams, as He did not utter, let’s follow what our Sampradayam taught us. Pl. remember, water, milk, blanket, silk are always in ‘madi’ condition, no dosha whatsoever as you feel ‘echal’. Hope you get the point. Hari Om.

  4. 3. Is a separate cloth must for covering up the fingers while reciting the exalted Gayatri mantram? I normally wear a dhoti at home. In that case, can I do it by covering up the fingers with a part (from the corner) of the dhoti?

  5. Namaskaram. Very nice article. Nice discussion in the comments section too. In this regard, I have a few doubts. Hope I can post them here.

    1. At the end of the Gayatri japam, we recite the mantram “Uttame sikhare….. Brahmanebhyo hyanujnanam…”. I have heard that Sandhya is mandatory for all trai varnikas. In that case, would the sloka be different for Kshatriya and Vaishya castes? or do they also recite the mantra praying for Brahmanebhyo only?

    2. I have read that, without the performance of Sandhyavandanam, a person is not eligible for other prayers. Mahaperiya has explicitly stated that, Gayathri mantram gives strength to the other mantras we recite. But my question is, since we recite the Gayathri only in the Sandhya periods, as part of the Sandhya vandanam, what about the period before Sandhya? For example the period 3:30 – 5 am is called Brahma Muhurtam by some scholars. If we do japa anushtanam of mantras, stotras in this Brahma muhurtam, won’t we be doing all that before we even start our Gayathri japam?

    • Sri Gurubyo Namah!

      Sri Hari

      1. why you worry about other Varna’s procedure? Pl. concentrate on the Sampradayam of your Varna. For all Tri Varnas, there are three different Gayatri Mantra. Let’s not get into that we are in ‘Guru Stanam’. I may hurt you by saying like this, but I shared my practical experience with you Hari Garu. Hope you don’t feel you are abused.

      2. Remember Vishwamitra was waking-up Rama and Lakshmana for SV with the sloka called ‘Suprabhatam’ (kausalyasuprajarama! purva sandhya pravartate uttistha! narasardula kartavyam daivam ahnikam)

Sandhyākāla is totally 72 minutes (i.e. 3 ghaṭīs). Prātassandhyā spans from two ghaṭīs [span of 48 minutes] before sunrise and until one ghaṭī after it. Suppose, sunrise is 6 AM, then Prātassandhyā times starts from 5.12 AM (until 6.24AM) In case, it is not possible to do sandhyā in this time, a grace period (gauṇakāla) of 2 hours [span of 5 ghaṭīs] after end of original span (mukhyakāla) of sandhyā is allowed. If sunrise is 6 AM, then the Prātassandhyā can be performed until 8.24 AM, If that is also exceeded, then Prāyaścitta arghya (i.e. fourth one) has to be given.

Coming to your question, the time mentioned is ‘Brahmamuhurtam’ You can always perform Japam and Yoga at this time until Prātassandhyā Kalam. Break now and complete SV and then perform your Nitya Poojas and other daily routines. This for common people like you and me. For those in Guru Stanams, there are separate rituals and let’s not entertain in that for now. For the interest sake you want to know, pl. contact your Vadyar.

Thanks for the opportunit Hari Garu!

      Hari Om !

  6. Dear Balaji Sir,

Thank you for this wounderful article. I just have one doubt. I am 61 years old and was doing my sandya in my youth and stopped it once work shedule got hectic. I have restarted it since I am retired. My question is this, since Sandya worship is so powerful, the water in the thambalam(plate) after sandya is normally poured under a tree or tulasi plant. I was wandering if I can drink this water to enhance my health and wellbeing. Can I also get my wife and children to drink it. Thank you. My email is tns.soorya@gmail.com

    • No you can’t drink. Anything you give argyam doesn’t belong to you..it belongs to whom you gave argyam to . In this case it belongs to a navagraha etc. if you want to energize water for drinking, do Om Nama shivaya or Rama Rama Japam and then drink.

      • I think there is a communication gap here. The Argyam followed by Tarpanam, jalam flows out of our hands, it is already on the ground. Nobody can retrieve it for any other use. What Mr TNS_Soorya-ji is asking is about the water in the japa-sombu at the conclusion of the Gayatri Japam. He is asking is it okay to drink it instead of pouring it out on a plant or a tree. That’s a genuine doubt. I also used to wonder if it can be better utilized.

      • No communication gap sir. I actually was asking about the Argyam and Tarpanam, jalam only. I perform my sandya in my pooja room and pour the water in a Thambalam plate. Thank you very much for your concern and reply.

      • In that case Sri Mahesh is absolutely correct; you have no claim over the Jalam that you have given away by way of Argyam and Tarpanam to Surya and Adhityaadi-grahams and Kesavadhi devatas.
        .
However, my question and my doubt about the Gayatri-Japam-jalam still stands. What should one do with that? Especially those living in flats — are they supposed to dump it in kitchen sink or where?

PS: For many years I used to perform the #Jala_bhaagam of Sandhyavandanam in a Taambaalam and pour it in the Tulasi pot. But Tulasi pot also has its limit. It cannot accept water beyond a point. With a heavy heart I used to pour all the water in the kitchen sink. But off late I have started performing the #Jala_bhaagam of my sandhyaavandanam on the terrace of my apartments, and do the #Japa_bhaagam inside the house. Therefore, what do I do with the #Japam_jalam?

      • Sri sriaiyerrs garu

There are plenty of options for this. You can have two or more Tulsi plant at Flats for pouring this water, or pour it at a place where human being feet can’t reach, or pour it to some other plants such rose, etc. Why worry?

      • Thanks Mahesh Sir. Noted and thanks for your advice to energize the water with Rama nama.

      • Can Sandhyavandanam be done in open terrace?

      • Why not Subramanian garu? what was the reason behind this doubt?

  7. Attn: karthik rajashekaran

“For Evening Sandhyavandanam , the first part I sit facing North, and the second part I face west. Is this correct direction?”

There are slight variations in following this ritual. No two person do same way as it differs from region to region. Don’t be confused by these.

In general, In the evening all should be done facing West only (Argyam and Japam).

  8. Attn: sriaiyerrs – What is the value of a knowledge that which is not shared for good purpose?

    Look at this Sloka:

    विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयात् याति पात्रताम्।

    पात्रत्वाद्धनमाप्नोति धनाद्धर्मं ततः सुखम्॥

vidyā dadāti vinayaṁ vinayād yāti pātratām|

    pātratvāddhanamāpnoti dhanāddharmaṁ tataḥ sukham||

Knowledge gives humility, from humility, one attains character; From character, one acquires wealth; from wealth good deeds (righteousness) follow and then happiness.

I always strive for these values in my life with the grace of Maha Periva……

Jaya Jaya Shankara… Hara Hara Shankara….

  9. Why a cloth is required to cover while chanting gayathri japam?

    • Precisely. I also have the same doubt. I request someone who is knowledgeable on this score to clear our doubt, please. Thanks.

    • I just share what I learned from the Vedic scholars.

It is said that negative energies such as Bhootas and Prethas are always stay among us. However, with our this physical eyes, we cannot see them, whereas they always try some way to escape from the their current stature which is inexpressible to say how difficult to live with. The only way to escape is to earn Punya. Since their current stature doesn’t allow to do any Punya, they can escape from this only by doing some Videeka Kaaryams and Japas by others on their behalf. They also try to grasp somebody’s somebody’s Japa Punya when they one do not chant Mantra in mind and cover while doing. This is how it is also mentioned in Garuda Purana also (explained by Pravachak during the Pravachanam).

Well, I hope you got your answer. Sarvam Krushnaarpanamastu.

Jaya Jaya Shankara …… Hara Hara Shankara….

      • Thank you so much for this clarification. This clears my so many decades long doubt! Somehow I could never get an opportunity to ask anybody. Even if I had, I don’t think they would have been as crystal clear as you are! #Pranaam.

      • For Evening Sandhyavandanam , the first part I sit facing North, and the second part I face west. Is this correct direction?

  10. can we used kindi instea of panchapathram during sandhyavandanam

  11. My 7 year old daughter recently asked me a question I was not able to answer. Hope experts in this blog can shed some light on it.

“Why is SV performed only by you and not amma? Should women also not perform SV and garner the blessings of Gayatri Devi? If the anga vandanam and prayanayamam are so beneficial, why is it advised for only you and not amma?”

I was not able to answer the question. Youngsters these days ask for explanation. Else, are not willing to listen to what we have to say. Hope you are able to advise. Hara Hara Shankara Jaya Jaya Shankara

    • Those are nice questions by your child and being a parent, we should clarify doubts raised by our children without showing our irritating face. Let me give answers question by question Sankar Garu.

Why is SV performed only by you and not by Amma?

There are a few duties assigned to only a few people based on their physical structure and withstanding power, etc. Have you ever your child wondered why Gents do not do ‘Kolam’ (Muggu in Telugu and Rangoli in Hindi) and only done by ladies? Men cannot sit a long time in that posture and do it whereas ladies can. As an elder you knew ladies have physical distancing in 3-4 days every month is also one of the reasons.

Should women also not perform SV and garner the blessings of Gayatri Devi?

Nice question! When my father is earning for my studies (for my knowledge), why I worry about earning in my childhood? A husband whatever Punyam he does, half of it will be credited in wife’s account. All she needs to do is to facilitate and see that he does it every day 3 times (at least 2 times), without fail. Any Pooja she does (like Vara Lakshmi Pooja or any other Vratam), the full Punyam will go into her account not even 1% to her husband.

If the Anga Vandanam and Pranayamam are so beneficial, why is it advised for only you and not Amma?

Of course, she can do Pranayamam if she learned it from a reliable source. Again, Anaga Vandanam is not necessary for her.

Finally, encourage the child to ask more questions and have patience to answer if not instantly, even later some time after consulting some. Hope I could clarify it.

    • Husband and wife are two fractions of one whole. When husband does it, it means both have done it. It is the job of one’s wife to prod her husband into performing his nithya-karma-anushtaanams in time. That is why she is called saha-dharmini. Marriage is upanayanam for wife. Husband is her Guru.
Gayatri is vedam. Vedam is Gayatri. Gayatri generates male hormones in the body. For a woman to have male hormone is a ugly sight. That is why both Vedam and Gayatri is proscribed for women. However, if someone wants to test its veracity who can stop them?

  12. who are allowed to do SV only brahmins are allowed or other community members can start and learn performing sv.

    • All those who were (Like Brahmin, Kshatriya and Vaishyas) undergone the ‘Upanayana Samskaram’ – thread wearing ceremony are allowed to chant Gayatri and each Varna has 3 different Gayatri to chant. One cannot chant the other’s.

The rest of the people no need to chant Gayatri since it is not mandatory to them.

For these 3 Varnas, it is MANDATORY 3 TIMES A DAY.

  13. balaji690@yahoo.co.in ,

Dear Sir, Good day to you .

As for the madhyanikam , i believe most of the people are engaged at their work place and it is very difficult to perform such rituals. So once we start the sayam sandhyavandhanam , can we peform the madhyanikam argyam + kesavadhi argyam and then start with mamopaatha for evening sandhyavandhanam ?

Can this method be followed .. please let us know.

    • Dear Vignesh Iyer Garu

I am not authority to decide any rules for rituals, however, I am a strict follower of SV all the 3 times, but stil some times I miss it due to official work. Being a Freelancer, it is possible for me to perform 3 times, but for regular office goers, I can understand it is difficult to do so.

Once Maha Periva gave a solution for this which I read it (even I follow this whenever I come to know that I would miss Madhyanikam). After 8.24 am, it is considered as afternoon, hence perform Pratah SV before this time, take a break and perform Madhyanikam and proceed for office.

If you still find time does not permit, you have two options now. 1. Just do Argyam in your office itself, if possible (it doesn’t take much time). 2. Give Prayachita Argyam first and start evening SV. Again, Prayachita is only and alternate process in case we genuinely miss Dharmic rituals, it CANNOT be considered as REGULAR everytime. Pl. consult your home Vadhyar or elders/veterans for better clarifications.

  14. Brahma Yagnam can be done by all..very eay..it takes not even 5 minutes….Three times Sandhya Vandhana takes just 45 minutes even if we do slowly and chant 108 Japas with 10 Pranayamas..

    • As you mentioned, it takes about 45 min for me to do Sandhyavandanam. Altogether 45 * 3 = 2 hr 15 min daily.

      • Dear Moorthii Garu, I don’t think 45 mts to perform each time. I should not take more than 20-25 mts everytime if your 108 times all 3 times. However initially you might take lengthy time, but after a regular practice it will gradually come down to 20-25 mts. Alternatively, Gayatri Japa in the morning 108 times, afternoon 32 times, evening 64 times is also prescribed but rest of other rituals remain same. In rare to rare occasion when you are in hurry/not in a postion to perform fully, you can perform only SV until Argyam, but this is only an ‘Apathkala Dharma’, cannot be considered as regular.

Thanks for your reply but I leave for work around 7am and back in evening around 7pm

I want to do trikaala sandhyavandanam seriously starting tomorrow

    Please advice ))))))

If you cannot do it Maadhyaanam at even at alternate timings with genuine reason, then you have to give Prayachitta Argyam while you do in the evening SV.

    • Is it ok to do both Morning and afternoon sandhyavandanam during early morning itself ?

      • Too many questions Karthik Rajashekaran in installments.. Write your all question at one stroke to me by email and I will answer to the best of my knowledge with the blessings of Maha Periva. (balaji690@yahoo.co.in)

    • In situations beyond your control, you can perform your Sandhyavandanam including Maadhyanikam — Maanaseekam (mentally). Wherever you are if you are able to grab 15 mts of privacy, seated anywhere you can do that.

THIS IS APPROVED METHOD BY NONE LESS ELSE THAN SRINGERI SARADA PEETAM. Sringeri Shankaracharya HH Sri Abhinva Vidyatirtha Mahaswamigal has said this in Tamil book ‘SandhyAvandanam’ with detailed explanation.

I go one step further — by transporting myself MENTALLY to the banks of Ganga at Haridwar, Hari-ki-Pairi Ghat where I bathe in Ganga, change into madi-vastram, tie-up my kudumi, apply vibhuti, sandana-kunkumam, get into knee-deep Ganga and start performing the Jala-baagam of the Sandhyavandanam/Maadhyaanikam, get back to the ground and perform the Japa-baagam. [You can even build a Temple for Sri Mahadeva/Sri Gayatri/Sri Mahavishnu, perform its Kumbabhishekam, or perform a simple abhishekam and archana with Vilvam to a Sivalingam. Anything is possible with the power of your mind. Maanaseeka worship is accorded equal merit if not more]

Initially it is a bit difficult to control your mind to do all that systematically. But if one persists, it becomes so easy, and you derive the satisfaction of not having missed your Sandhyavandanam.

  16. What time is best to do for MAADHYANIKAM Sandhyavandam ? As most work in professional world , want to know correct way for doing afternoon sandhi

    Please advise

    Thanks

    • The right time to do Madhyanikam is when the Sun is just above your head. Somewhere between 10.45 AM to 12.30 PM. But there is an avenue for those who are not able to perform Madhyanikam due to office timings. Madhyanikam can be done after 2 and half hours after sunrise. That is suppose, the sunrise is at 6 am, you can do Madhyanikam at 8.30 AM. This period is known as Sangava Kalam. You can do Madhyanikam during Sangava Kaalam

      • Thanks for your reply but I leave for work around 7am and back in evening around 7pm

I want to do trikaala sandhyavandanam seriously starting tomorrow

        Please advice

      • If I were in your place with same office timings, I would have done Madhyanikam immediately after Prataha Sandhi. But at any cost would not have given it up. Yes do it with Kalaateeta Prayaschitta arghyam.

      • For evening sandhyavandanam which direction should be done North or west .. Got confused .. Some online says north , some says west ..

      • Evening Sandhi is begun facing North. But Arghyam should be done facing west. After arghyam Keshavadi tarpanam should be done facing north. But Gayatri Japam can be done facing west in evening.

      • PART-I: JALA BAAGAM : To be performed facing the North because Aachamanam is not performed facing the West. But Argyam [3+1] is given facing the West.

PART-II: JAPA BAAGAM : To be performed facing the West [but Aachamanam at the end is to be performed facing the North].

I will be grateful if someone would correct me in this regard as even I have my own doubts whether I am correct.

  17. MAADHYANIKAM GAYATRI JAPAM CAN BE DONE SITTING. MORNING GAYATRI JAPAM SHOULD BE DONE STANDING

  18. Are the niyamanams or the Nithyakarmas applicable to a person in illness?

    • Well, is food compulsory for ill people? – Your question goes like this. Some kind of food is required to ill people so as to the medicine will work, right? Gayatri Mantra is required more importantly to the people of illness for faster recovery, if he can able to do it (even without bath, but this exemption is only to person of illness). In case, if he cannot sit and do it, someone on his behalf can do it. At least thinking of Gayatri Mantra at Trikaala and chant mentally at maximum possible times.

Jaya Jaya Shankara….. Hara Hara Shankara…..

    • It can be done maanaseekam. That is it can be done mentally. Or the person can ask someone else to do it on his behalf. [In these days and time when doing one’s own Sandhya Vandanam is so difficult, I don’t think any one else would do it willingly. May be one can engage the services of a Saastrigal to perform SV on your behalf]. THE BEST OPTION IS DOING IT MAANASEEKAM. Sri Sankaracharya of Saradha peetam, Sringeri has mentioned this in his book on Sandhyavandanam. I normally transport myself mentally to Devaprayag — the confluence of Baagirathi and Alaknanda, have a bath in the Ganga, change into madi-vastram, apply Vibhuti, sandana-kunkumam, get into knee-deep Ganga and perform my SV Jala-baakam and perform the Japa-baagam on the shore. It takes about 10 mts more as doing it mentally is slightly difficult. But if you practice it becomes easy.

  19. Should Thithi, Vaaram, Nakshatram, Yogam, Karanam should be read before Bath or before Pratha Sandhya Vandhanam. Please clarify.

    • Sri Aravind I will repeat the quote as mentioned above:

“…reading Panchangam, this is must be done before a bath where Sankalpam is taken with the tithi, nakshatra etc. But one must read the Panchangam in whichever way possible.”

To make it clear, read it before bath, nothing will go wrong to you. You need titi, nakshatra… etc to mention in the sankalpa during SV.

Maha Swamy padabi vandanam. Jaya Jaya Shankara….. Hara Hara Shankara…..

  20. A request. Can some body here correctly identify the five parts of Gayathri Maha Manthram for the purpose of chanting it correctly. Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara

    • Please ask a Sastrigal. Correctly chant with the swaras and leave gaps accordingly, don’t learn it from the internet. Gayatri is not in Sanskrit. It is always better to learn it from hearing. 5 parts – Pranava then 3 Vyahirtis then the essence of Rig, Yajur and Sama veda.

  21. Nice article on the importance of doing sandya vandanam. The message necessarily will have to be shared with relatives and friends. Janakiraman. Nagapattinam.

  22. One point I would like to add with your permission. People around me, I saw, most of them do SV but not in stipulated time (Sakaala Sandhi). I saw people doing Prathah Sandhi at 9-10 am and Saayam Sandhi at even 8-9 pm conveniently. I am not making any comment on them but want to share a wrong practice is existing. I would appreciate if any veteran come forward and explain on this.

Jaya Jaya Shankara….. Hara Hara Shankara…..

    • Where there is a valid reason for the delay — the kaalateetha praayaschitaargya argyam — should take care. For others, they should always strive to do it before sunrise, before it slants towards the West, and before it sets. [Argyam has to be given Kaanaamal, Koenaamal, Kandu].

But where there is no reason for the delay, yet some of us do it according to our “convenience” — it is okay that at least they perform it. Delayed offering is better than none at all. They should only pray the Veda Maata Gayatri to rid them of the taamas which makes them a lazy.

      • Since the lord was born as the Krishna-Avataram, to teach Karmayogam to all, I have found that offering prayers, with prostrations to lord Krishna, both at the beginning as well as at the end of the Sandhyavandanam, with full Sraddha, helps us be very regular in the practice.

    • Offer flowers to Lakshmi Devi (Bhargavi- daughter of Brighu) and try to please Shukracharya (Bhargavan – son of Brighu). If possible, use silver articles for worship. This will please Shukracharya. If both the children of Brighu are pleased then Brighu will help us. Chant 108 times the name of Brighu in front of Lakshmi devi or Shukracharya after offering flowers. Brighu is the most important Rishi who uplifts Dharma so, Bhishma has explained that the name of Brighu will make oneself and the others around him to follow the correct dharma. Preferred day is Friday /Brighuvasaram/Shukravaar. Preferred temples are where Lakshmi devi or Shukracharya (navagraha), even more better is temples with bhrighu’s connection. Eg: best Temple for making others follow dharma is parthasarathy Temple, chant 108 times “Brighu”.

  23. Excellent article. Kudos to Sri Sai Srinivasan and the author of the article for sharing and enriching our knowledge on Sandhyavandanam respectively. Start the first step of doing SV with utmost bhakti and shradhdha and in the process over a period, the perfection will get affixed automatically. Even thousands of miles stat with the first step only.

Maha Periva Paadam Sharanam! Jaya Jaya Shankara….. Hara Hara Shankara…..

  24. For interested People here are links of Sandhavandanam – uses & innermeaning useful for Telugu speaking people discources by Sri samavedam Shanmuka Sarma garu – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tqRPKQCy4U&t=1410s

  25. That’s terrific. But the posture of this child doing SV is wrong. He has to sit in a crouched posture while performing the “Jala-bhaagam”. While performing the Japam — Morning & Noon has to be done standing, and in the evening it can be done sitting [that is when the mat-aasanam comes into use]. However, in the case of a marathoner performing sahasra Gayatri, it can be done seated any-time.

He has to keep a larger vessel containing water by his side. The argyam he gives should be generous — both his hands full. Thumbs should stand separate [without joining the palm]. Morning argyam should be given with his heels raised, eyes closed, thumbs standing apart. Noon argyam must be given feet planted flat…. and evening argyam bending low.

Gayatri should be taught correctly. It is “…Tat savittur…” AND NOT “…Tatsa vittur…”

The sankalpa mantram is “Mamopaatha….” AND NOT “Mamopaartha…” as Sri Mahaperiyavaa has written in his DK.

    Well. That’s it for now.
