சாஸ்திரத்தில் முதலில் இவன் மனஸை அநுஸரித்து இஹ லோக, ஸ்வர்க்க லோக லாபங்களுக்காகவே, அதாவது இந்திரிய ஸெளக்யங்களுக்காகவே கர்மாவைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறது. ஆனால் இந்தக் கர்மாக்களைச் செய்வதாலேயே இந்திரியங்களின் இழுப்பு கொஞ்சங் கொஞ்சமாகக் குறைகிறது. சித்தம் சுத்தமாகி மனஸானது [கார்யமில்லாமலே] தியானம் செய்யப் பழக்கப் படுத்தப்படுகிறது. கார்யமே வேண்டாம், “வேதாந்தா”, “த்யானா” என்றால் என்ன ஆகிறது? இதை நான் சொல்வதைவிடக் கிருஷ்ண பரமாத்மாவின் வாக்கில் சொல்கிறேன்:

கர்மேந்த்ரியாணி ஸம்யம்ய ய ஆஸ்தே மநஸா ஸ்மரந் |

இந்த்ரியார்தான் விமூடாத்மா மித்யாசார: ஸ உச்யதே ||

அதாவது “காரியத்திலா ஞானம் இருக்கிறது? அதெல்லாம் வேண்டாம்” என்று கை, கால் முதலான கர்மேந்திரியங்களுக்கு வேலை கொடுக்காமல் நிறுத்திவிட்டு நேராக மனஸை சுத்தமான தியானத்தில் நிறுத்துவதற்கு ஆரம்பித்தால் என்ன ஆகிறது அந்த மனஸ் பரமாத்மாவையா நினைக்கிறது? இல்லை.

இந்த்ரியார்தான் மநஸா ஸ்மரந்.

இந்திரியங்களுக்கு வேண்டிய அல்ப ஸுகங்களைத்தான் மனஸு நினைக்கிறது. கர்மாவால் கர்மேந்த்ரியங்களை அழுக்கெடுத்து சுத்தப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளாதபோது மனஸும் அழுக்கைவிட்டு மேலே போகாதுதான். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Taking into consideration the mental make-up of the common man, our sastras have prescribed the action oriented rituals initially only for the purpose of attainment of earthly and other worldly joys. But, as these rituals are performed, the mind is slowly weaned away from these materialistic desires and the mind gets purified. One is able to meditate without any materialistic objective in mind. But what happens when philosophy (Vedanta) and meditation is directly advocated without any action? I prefer to quote the words of Lord Krishna himself here: ‘Karmendriyaani Samyamya……Sa Uchyathe”. (Srimad Bhagawad Gita 3.6). What happens when no work is allotted to the Karmendriyaas (the parts of the body designed for action) under the belief that enlightenment has got nothing to do with action?
