Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – Adiyen read a beautiful incident from Shri Ra Ganapathy Anna’s book Maha Periyava Virundhu which I wanted to share with you all. How should we address our Periyava? It is not about how we wish to address but what HH wishes. From the below incident it is very clear that HH does not want to be referred to as ‘Paramacharya’, a title used to address Saiva Matam Aacharyas. Sri Periyava wants to be addressed  ‘Chinnava’ 🙂 Do we dare do that? It’s very clear our Periyava did not want any titles but the closest he approved is Maha Periyava. The big takeaway from this entire incident is the humility and the humbleness our sarveswaran displays which is what we really need to take.

மஹா பெரியவா – பெயர் எப்படி வந்தது ?

ஸ்ரீ ஜெயேந்திர ஸரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள் தம்முடைய பதினெட்டாவது வயதில் பீடாரோஹணம் செய்த புதுஸில் , அவரை எல்லாரும்
‘ புதுப் பெரியவா’ என்று அழைக்க ஆரம்பித்து அதற்குப் பின் சில வருஷங்கள் கழித்தும் கூட புதுப் பெரியவாளாகவே அழைக்கப்பட்டார்.

இது பற்றி ஸ்ரீ ரா.கணபதி பெரியவாளிடம் ஸம்பாஷித்த போது ……..

” எல்லாரும் புதுப் பெரியவாளை இனிமே ‘ பெரியவா ‘ ன்னும் ,
என்னை ‘ பரமாச்சார்யாள்’ ன்னும் கூப்பிடலாம்ன்னு ஒரு அபிப்ராயம் இருக்கு – ன்னு கேள்விப்பட்டேன்.

தமிழ்நாட்டைப் பொறுத்த மட்டுல, சைவ மடாலய ஆதீனகர்த்தாக்களுக்கே ‘ பரமாச்சார்யார்’- ங்கற பட்டம் வெக்கறது…..அத்வைத மடாதிபதியை  அப்டிக் கூப்டறது மரபுக்கு ஒத்துவராது….

‘ ஒங்களுக்கெல்லாம் என்ன வேணும் ? எனக்கும் அவருக்கும் வித்யாஸம் தெரியணும். அவளோவ்..தானே ? அப்டீன்னா … புதுப் பெரியவாளைப் ‘ பெரியவா ‘…ன்னும் , என்னைச்
‘ சின்னவா ‘ன்னும் சொல்லிட்டாப் போச்சு! … என்று சொல்லி குழந்தையாட்டம் ஒரே கும்மாளச் சிரிப்பு.

‘ பால்யத்லேர்ந்து …. பெரியவா, பெரியவா -ன்னு  கேட்டுக் கேட்டுப் புளிச்சுப் போச்சு! பெரிய்யவாளா முழக்கினதெல்லாம் போறும்! யாருக்குமே தெரியாத சின்ன ஆஸாமியாக எங்கயாவது சுருட்டிண்டு கெடக்க மாட்டோமா-ன்னு தோண்றது. அப்பப்போதான் தோண்றதே ஒழிய , அதுவே ஸ்டெடியா நெலச்சு நிக்கக் காணோம் ! அதனாலதான் , மறுபடி மறுபடி மறுபட் அக்ஷதை போட்டுண்டு ஏதாவது ப்ளான்,ஸ்கீன் அது இதுன்னு போட்டுண்டே இருக்கேன்…..

….. ‘ சின்னவா , சின்னவா – ன்னு எல்லாரும் சொல்ல ஆரம்பிச்சாலாவது
‘ சின்னவனாவே சுருட்டிண்டு கெட ‘ன்னு அது வாயைக் கையை அப்பப்போ கட்டிப் போடுமோ-ன்னு தோண்றது “என்றார்.

” மஹதோ மஹீயான்”
எனப் பெரிதினும் பெரிதாக உள்ள தத்வமே “அணோரணீயான்” என அணுவிற்கணுவாய் இருப்பது போல், மஹா பெரியவா மஹா சின்னவராகவே தம்மைக் கருதிக் கொண்டவரன்றோ !

மறுபடியும் கண்களில் குசும்பும், சிரிப்பும் பொங்கியோட ” பக்தியிலேயும் மஹா பெரியவா- ங்கலாம். அப்டி இல்லாவிட்டாலும் மஹா பெரியவா-ங்கலாம்” என்று இரண்டாவது ‘ மஹா பெரியவா ‘ வை , ஒரே நையாண்டியோடு உச்சரித்தார்.

”  அறிவில்லாதவனை ‘ மஹா ‘ கெட்டிக்காரன்! ன்னு சொல்லுவோமோல்லியோ ? தன் தகுதிக்கு மீறி ஏதாவது சொல்றவாட்ட …

” மஹா பெரியவன் ! சொல்ல வந்துட்டியாக்கும்?” ன்னு சொல்லுவோமே, அந்த ” மஹா” தான் எனக்குப் பொருந்தும் ….”என்று குழங்தைப் பெரியவர் சிரித்தார்.

எவ்வளவு பெரியவர்  எவ்வளவு எளிமையாக வாழ்ந்து நமக்கு  எதை எவ்வாறு  உபதேஸித்தார் என்பதை எண்ணும் போது மெய் சிலிர்க்கிறது.

‘பரமாச்சார்யாள் ‘ என்று அழைப்பது நம் மரபுக்கு எதிரானது என்று அவர் கூறி இருப்பதால்,  நாம் அவரை மஹா பெரியவர் என்றே அழைக்கப் பழகிக் கொள்வோம்.

இந்தப் பாரத தேசத்தில், முற்றிக்கொண்டு வரும் கலியில்,  ஸனாதன தர்ம ஸ்வரூபமாகவே ஒவ்வொரு க்ஷணமும் அப்பழுக்கு சொல்ல முடியாதபடி நூறு வருஷங்கள் மஹாபெரியவா நம் நடுவில் நடமாடி இருக்கிறார், பூதப்ரேதப்பைஸாஸங்கள் போடும் ஆட்டங்களுக்கு நடுவே ஆனந்த தாண்டவமாடும் பரமேஸ்வரனாக ! அவர் திருவடிகளே சரணம் ! அவர் என்றும் நம்மைக் கைவிட மாட்டார் !

Maha Periava – How did this name come about…

After being started to be called as Pudu Periava, by everyone, in the immediate days after his anointment at the age of eighteen, Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swami was continued to be referred to as Pudu Periava even after the passage of some years.

When Shri Ra Ganapathy discussed about this with Mahaperiava….

“I came to know that there was an opinion to refer Pudu Periava as Periava and me as Paramacharya.  As far as Tamil nadu is concerned, only Saiva Aadheenakarthas of mutts are called as Paramacharyas. To call a pontiff of Advaita like that, wouldn’t be in line with the traditions”.

“What do you people want? Is it not that there should be a distinction between him and me?  In that case, it would be enough to call him as Periava and I be referred to as chinnava”.  Saying, this, he burst out laughing like a child.

“Fed up being referred to as Periava, Periava, since my childhood.  A thought comes to me  that it was enough doing things as Periava and I should curl myself into a corner as a small person unknown to anybody.

While this thought occurs only now and then, it does not stay steady.  That’s why, every now and then, I repeatedly take up responsilities on myself and start some plan or scheme.

He said, “I feel that if everyone starts calling me chinnava, then perhaps, as a chinnava, I might curl myself somewhere and that might help me to control my mouth and hands”.

Is it not that Maha Periava has considered himself as Maha Chinnava, just like the greatest of the great concepts ‘Mahatho Maheeyan’ resides as ‘ Anoraneeyan’, an atom within an atom?

Again, with mischief and glee in his eyes, he said that one can be called as Maha .. Periava, if there is bakthi or if not also, one can be called ‘Maha Periava’, using it as a homonym. (Referring to Periyar E V Ramaswamy naicker, a well-known atheist).

“Don’t we call, a stupid fellow, as a very intelligent man (sarcastically)? Don’t we chide a person who says something beyond his comprehensive abilities, as, oh! Maha periavan, you have come! That maha only will be appropriate for me”, said that childlike Periava and laughed.

Our body shudders when we wonder how this huge personality, remained so simple and how he taught us so many different things.

Since he has said that it’s against the traditions to call him as Paramacharya, we shall make it a practice to call him only as Maha periava.

In this country of Bharath at a time when Kali is getting worse, Maha Periava has lived among us, every moment, without a blemish, for hundred years, as the personification of sanathana dharma.  As Parameswara, who dances with joy among the devilish dances of incorporal beings like ghosts.
