லௌகிக பிற்காலத்தில் மதம் என்பதில் யஜ்ஞகர்மா குறைந்துவிட்டது. லாபங்களுக்காகவே வேறுவித அநுஷ்டானங்களைக் காரியமாக கொடுப்பது தொடர்ந்திருக்கிறது. “ராமேஸ்வரத்துக்குப் போ, அரச மரத்தைச் சுற்று, பிள்ளை பிறக்கும். ஸுர்ய நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணு, நேத்ர ரோகம் ஸரியாகப் போகும். கனகதாராஸ்தவம், சொல்லு ரூபாய் வரும்” என்றெல்லாம் லௌகிக பலன்களுக்காகவே பல காரியங்களை சாஸ்த்ரம் சொல்கிறது. இந்தப் பலனில் உள்ள பற்றினாலேயே பெரும்பாலான ஜனங்கள் இதுகளைப் பண்ணுகிறார்கள். இவர்கள் வாஸ்தவத்தில் உயர்ந்த அறிவு பெறாத ‘அவித்வான்’கள்தான். இவர்களைத்தான் “ஸக்தா:கர்மண்யவித்வாம்ஸோ” என்கிறார் பகவான். இவர்களிடம் “இப்படி அல்ப பலனையெல்லாம் நினைக்காதீர்கள். ஈஸ்வராநுபவம் என்ற உசந்த லக்ஷ்யத்தையே நினையுங்கள்” என்று உபதேசம் பண்ணினால் எடுபடாது. அவர்களுடைய ஸம்ஸ்காரக் குறைவு காரணமாக, அவர்களை இப்போது இருக்கிற இடத்திலிருந்தே அவர்களுடைய மனஸை அநுஸரித்துக் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாகத்தான் மேலே கொண்டு போக வேண்டும். இதற்கு அவர்களைப் பக்குவப்படுத்துவதற்காகத்தான் சாஸ்திரங்களே அவர்களுக்கு இப்படிப்பட்ட ஆத்ம ஸம்பந்தமில்லாத காரியங்களையும் கொடுக்கிறது. பலனுக்காகத்தான் அவர்கள் இவற்றைப் பண்ணுகிறார்கள். பண்ணிவிட்டுப் போகட்டும். ஆனால் இப்படிக் காரியம் பண்ணுவதால் என்ன ஏற்படுகிறதென்றால் இவர்கள் உத்தேசித்த பலன் உண்டாவதோடு கூட, இவர்கள் உத்தேசிக்காமேலே கொஞ்சங் கொஞ்சமாகச் சித்தசுத்தி என்ற பெரிய பலன் உண்டாக ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
Though the practice of yagnas have come down over the ages, still many rituals are followed to attain certain material and worldly benefits. One is instructed to go to Rameswaram to have children or recite perform Surya Namaskaram to improve the eyesight or recite Kanakadhara Sthavam to attain money. People also perform these rituals because they are attracted towards these worldly benefits. They are truly ’avidwans’ who have not attained a more sublime awareness. These are the people Bhagawan Krishna mentions in the sloka “Saktaahaa Karmanyavidwaamso”. If you advise these people to desist from such worldly ambitions and aim for the ultimate Divine Experience, they will not do so.  So, keeping in mind the state of their immature mind, one has to guide them step by step towards the higher ideals. It is only to give them this maturity the sastras have prescribed these rituals which are in no way spiritually oriented. Of course, they perform these rituals only with these worldly benefits in mind.
