வெறும் ரீஸன் என்று மட்டும் எடுத்துக் கொண்டால் அதற்குப் பொருந்தாத அநேக விஷயங்களை எவருமே பண்ணத்தான் வேண்டியிருக்கிறது; அப்போதுதான் நம்முடைய லக்ஷ்யத்தில் நமக்கு ஒரு ஆர்வத்தை, ஈடுபாட்டை எழுப்பி அதற்கு மற்றவர்களின் ஆதரவையும் திரட்ட முடிகிறது. இதற்குச் சின்னங்களும் காரியமும் இருந்தேயாக வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. கொடியையும் ஸ்லோகன் அட்டையையும் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு பாத யாத்திரை, ஸைகிள் ஊர்வலம், மாட்டு வண்டி ஊர்வலம் என்று நடத்தும்போது இதில் பகுத்தறிவுக்குச் சேராத எத்தனை விஷயம் இருக்கிறது என்று பார்ப்பதில்லை. அதுவே பஞ்சகச்சம், பரிவட்டம், ஜாலரா, நாமசங்கீர்த்தனம் என்று பஜனை கோஷ்டி போனால் பரிஹாசமாகிறது. பொலிடிகல் இன்டரஸ்ட் (அரசியல் ஈடுபாடு), லேபர் இன்டரஸ்ட் என்பது போல இந்த லோகத்தை மட்டுமே சேர்ந்த விஷயங்களுக்காக இப்படி ரீசனை விட்டு விட்டு, மண்ணெண்ணையை கொட்டி கொளுத்திக்கொண்டு உயிரை விடுகிற அளவுக்குப் போனால் Martyr [தியாகி] பட்டம் கொடுக்கிறார்கள்! அதுவே சாச்வதமான தர்மத்துக்காக, மதத்துக்காக விட்டால் ‘ஸுபர்ஸ்டிஷியஸ்’, ‘அசடு’ என்று மட்டம் தட்டுகிறார்கள். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Even if only the principle of reason is replied, things which go against it have to be done to attract people to the reformist goals and garner their support. Symbols and some kind of action are needed for the same. Thus when walking tours (pada yatra), cycle processions, or bullock cart processions take place with flags and banners being carried along, nobody realizes how many things contradictory to the rationalist thoughts take place. But when a Bhajan group, chanting the holy name of Bhagawan (Nama Sangeerthanam) goes in a procession, with the traditional dhoti-pancha kachcham, head gear and cymbals, it is mocked at. Based on political interest or labor interest if somebody, for purely worldly reasons, loses his reasoning capacity and immolates himself, he is hailed as a martyr.
