There is a reason that reformers put forth for discarding the religious traditions and rituals. They declare that it is enough to be pure at heart and there is no need for the formalities of rituals. If the mind is left free, it will tend to wander in wrong directions. Only one in a million will have a mind that remains controlled and positively directed even it is not assigned any task.
