சிகைக்கு அப்புறம் ‘ஸூத்ரம்’ என்றது பூணூலை அல்ல. ஏனென்றால் பூணூல் விஷயத்தில் அத்தனை குலசாரங்களுக்கும் ஒரே விதிதான். என்னென்ன அநுஷ்டானம் செய்ய வேண்டுமென்று விரிவாக Codify செய்து ஆச்வலாயன ஸூத்ரம், ஆபஸ்தம்ப ஸூத்ரம், போதாயன ஸூத்ரம் என்றெல்லாந்தான் வெவ்வேறு பல சாஸ்திரங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. இவற்றில் நாம் பிறந்த குடும்பத்தாருக்கு எது ஸுத்ரமோ அதில் சொல்லியிருப்பவற்றையே எடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். ‘புண்ட்ரம்’ என்று சொன்னது நெற்றிக்கு இட்டுக் கொள்வதை. விபூதி, கோபி சந்தனம், நாமம், கரிப்பொட்டு, இவற்றிலும் வெவ்வேறு வகைகள் என்று இருப்பதில் குலாசாரப்படி இட்டுக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர ஸரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

The Soothram mentioned after Sigai (Kudumi) is not the Poonal or the Yagnopaveetham. In the matter of the Poonal, the rules are common to all the sects. The religious practices one should follow have been elaborately codified into Achvalaayana Soothram, Apasthamba Soothram, Bodhaayana Soothram and so on. We should observe that Soothram which is followed by our families. Pundram refers to what is applied on the forehead. There are a variety of Pundrams like Vibhoothi, Thiruman, Kari Pottu, and Gopi Chandanam.
