Talking about Padha Yathra’s I will publish a separate interview from Shri Muthuraman Mama, an octogenarian,  the camp and yathra organizer on how our gurus Maha Periyava and Pudhu Periyava used to do yatras. There are some interesting facts and observations from very close quarters that will really move us when we hear Pudhu Periyava never used any Padhuka’s, Mena, and barely a cloth for covering in severe winter. இனிமே எனக்கு இந்த மேனா வேண்டாம்!

காஞ்சிப் பெரியவரின் கூடவே இருந்து, அவருக்கு 40 ஆண்டுக் காலம் சேவை
செய்யும் பாக்கியம் பெற்றவர் லக்ஷ்மிநாராயணன் என்னும் 76 வயதுப்
பெரியவர். மாங்காட்டில் இருக்கிறார். காஞ்சிப் பெரியவர் பற்றி அவர்
சொன்ன ஒரு விஷயம்……

காஞ்சிப் பெரியவர் தமது பரிவாரங்களுடன் நடந்து வருகிறார். லஸ் அருகில்,
அவரையும் அவரது அடியவர் கூட்டத்தையும் தாக்குவதற்காக திராவிடர்
கழகத்தினர் கழி, கட்டைகளோடு நின்றுகொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள். காஞ்சிப்
பெரியவருக்கு ஏதேனும் சங்கடம் நேர்ந்துவிட்டால், தங்களால் அதைத் தாங்கிக்
கொள்ள முடியாதே என்கிற பதைப்போடு டி.டி.கே., சதாசிவம் போன்றோர் கையைப் பிசைந்து கொண்டு நிற்கிறார்கள். பெரியவரை மேலே முன்னேறி வர வேண்டாம் என்று அவர்கள் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறார்கள். அவரது பாதுகாப்புக்கு போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகள் இருக்கிறார்கள். இருந்தாலும், அவர்களும் தங்களை மீறி பெரியவருக்கு ஏதேனும் ஆபத்து நேர்ந்துவிடுமோ என்கிற பயத்தில், அவரை மேலே செல்ல வேண்டாம் என்று தயவுடன் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறார்கள்.

பெரியவர் புன்னகைக்கிறார். “ஏன் வீணா பயப்படறேள்? அவா என்னை ஒண்ணும் பண்ண மாட்டா!’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு, அருகே இருந்த அம்பாள் கோவில் எதிரே நின்று சிறிது நேரம் கண்களை மூடிப் பிரார்த்தனை செய்துகொண்டுவிட்டு, மேலே நடக்கத் தொடங்குகிறார். கூடவே நடந்து செல்லும் அனைவரின் மனதிலும் திக்…திக்..! என்ன ஆகப் போகிறதோ என்று படபடப்பு!

அந்த நேரத்தில், ஈ.வே.ரா. பெரியார் அங்கே வருகிறார். திராவிடர் கழகத்
தொண்டர்களைப் பார்த்து உரத்த குரலில், “எல்லாரும் கட்டைகளைக் கீழே
போட்டுட்டு, ஒதுங்கி நில்லுங்க. பெரியவரை வழி மறிக்கிறது, தாக்குறது
எல்லாம் கூடாது, சொல்லிட்டேன்! அவர் எங்கே போகணுமோ, அங்கே அவரை ஒரு ஆபத்தும் இல்லாம கொண்டு போய்ச் சேர்க்க வேண்டியது உங்க பொறுப்பு!’ என்று கட்டளை இடுகிறார். அந்தக் கணீர்க் குரல் பெரியவருக்கும் அவரைச் சுற்றி நிற்கும் அனைவருக்கும் கேட்கிறது. “நான்தான் சொன்னேனே, பார்த்தீர்களா!’ என்பதுபோல் பெரியவர் தம் அருகில் இருப்பவர்களைப் பார்த்துப் புன்னகை பூத்தபடி, தொடர்ந்து நடக்கிறார்.

பெரியாரின் கட்டளையைச் சிரமேற்கொண்டு, பெரியவரைப் பாதுகாப்பாக அழைத்துக் கொண்டுபோய் விடுகிறார்கள் திராவிடர் கழகத் தொண்டர்கள். இந்தச் சம்பவம் நடக்கும்போது கூடவே இருந்தவர் லக்ஷ்மிநாராயணன். இதை அவர் விவரித்தபோது, அன்றைக்கிருந்த படபடப்பு அவரது வர்ணனையில் இருந்தது.

இந்தச் சம்பவத்துக்குச் சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னால் வரை, காஞ்சிப்
பெரியவர் ‘மேனா’ என்று சொல்லக்கூடிய சிவிகையில்தான் சென்று கொண்டு
இருந்தார். சிவிகை என்பது பல்லக்கு. பழைய காலத் திரைப் படங்களில்
இளவரசியை ஒரு பல்லக்கில் வைத்து, முன்னால் நான்கு பேர், பின்னால் நான்கு
பேர் தூக்கிச் செல்வதைப் பார்த்திருக்கலாம். பெரியவரையும் அதுபோல்தான்
அடியவர்கள் தூக்கிச் செல்வார்கள்.

ஒருமுறை, பெரியவர் அதுபோல் மேனாவில் சென்றுகொண்டு இருந்தபோது, வழியில் மேடை போட்டுப் பெரியார் பேசிக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார். “மற்றவர்கள்
சிரமப்பட்டுத் தூக்கிச் செல்ல, சொகுசாக உட்கார்ந்துகொண்டு போகிறாரே,
இவரெல்லாம் ஒரு துறவியா? மனிதனை மனிதன் சுமப்பது எத்தனைக் கேவலமானது!

துறவி என்றால் எல்லாச் சுகங்களையும் துறக்க வேண்டும். இப்படி அடுத்தவர்

தோளில் உட்கார்ந்து போகும் இவரைத் துறவி என்று எப்படி ஒப்புக்கொள்ள
முடியும்?’ என்று பெரியார் முழங்கிக்கொண்டு இருப்பது பெரியவரின்
காதுகளில் விழுந்தது.

அவ்வளவுதான்… மேனாவை அங்கேயே தரையிறக்கச் சொல்லி இறங்கி விட்டார்
பெரியவர். “அவர் ஏதோ சொல்றார்; சொல்லிட்டுப் போறார். அதைப் பெரிசா
எடுத்துக்காதீங்கோ! உங்களைச் சுமந்துண்டு போறதை நாங்க பாக்கியமா
கருதறோம்!’என்று மடத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் பெரியவரிடம்
கெஞ்சியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

“இல்லை. அவர் சொல்றதுதான் சரி! சுகத்தைத் துறக்காதவன் துறவியே இல்லை.
இனிமே எனக்கு இந்த மேனா வேண்டாம். இனி நான் எங்கே போகணும்னாலும்
நடந்துதான் போகப் போறேன்’ என்று தீர்மானமான முடிவெடுத்துவிட்டார்
காஞ்சிப் பெரியவர்.

கடைசி வரையிலும், அவர் அந்த முடிவிலிருந்து மாறவில்லை. அவர் கால்கள்

தெம்பு இருக்கும்வரை நடந்து கொண்டே இருந்தன.

No need of palanquin for me!

Sri Lakshminarayanan, an elderly gentleman 76 years old, living at Maangadu, is blessed to have been staying with Sri Mahaperiyava and performing services to Him for over 40 years. Here is a share of his experience…

Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava was walking along with devotees. Near Luz, Cadres of Dravida Kazhagam were standing with sticks and woods to provoke Him and His devotees. People like T.T.K, Sadasivam were standing tensed and having palpitations thinking about that they would not be able to tolerate if something untoward were to happen to Sri Maha Periyava.  They requested Sri Maha Periyava not to proceed. Policemen were there for protection. Inspite of this, worried about the safety of Him, they pleaded and requested Sri Maha Periyava not to proceed as they feared things might go out of hand.

Sri Maha Periyava smiled. “Why are you worried unnecessarily?’ They won’t do anything to me!, uttering this He prayed to the nearby Ambal temple with closed eyes for few minutes, then proceeded with  his walk. Others, who accompanied Him for the walk, were really tensed. Worried about what would happen!

At that time E.V.R, Periyar came there. Looking at the cadres of the Dravidar Kazhagam he ordered in very strong voice “All of you drop your sticks and stay clear of the His path. Stopping or provoking Periyavar is strictly not allowed, my order! Wherever He needs to go, it’s all your responsibility to ensure his safe journey there without even a small hurdle!”  ordered Periyar.His (E.V.R) captivating voice was heard to Him and all surrounding devotees. “Didn’t I tell you!” was seemingly the expression of  Sri Maha Periyava’s gaze at his devotees with smile, He continued his course.

Taking Periyar’s orders with conviction, Dravida kazhagam cadres accompanied Sri Maha Periyava to His destination. Sri Laksminarayanan was there on the spot when this incident happened. When he detailed this incident same agitation and tension was there in his narration.

Few years before this incident, Sri Maha Periyava was using this kind of palanquin for his journey. Palanquin is kind of carriage. In olden movies one could have seen a carriage was used to carry princess with four men in the front and four men in the rear carrying it. Same way devotees carried Sri Maha Periyava during his journeys.

Once while Sri Maha Periyava was going in palanquin like that, Periyar (EVR) was speaking at a stage meeting in the way. “While others are toiling out and carrying him, He is sitting and going relaxed, is such a person a saint? Humans carrying Human, is how disgraceful! A saint means, he has to relinquish all pleasures. How can we accept (him), who is sitting and going in the shoulders of others?” this loud speech was heard in His ears.

That’s all. He instructed the palanquin to be place in the ground, there itself. “He (EVR Periyar) said something and let it be. Please don’t take that seriously! We are feeling very blessed to have been carrying you!”  Pleaded and expressed devotees of Sri Matam to Sri Maha Periyava.

“No. What he said was right. One who has not relinquished pleasures is not a saint at all. No need of palanquin for me, hereafter. From now on, wherever I have to go, I will only go by walk” this was the final decision of Sri Maha Periyava.

Till his life, He did not change this decision. His legs were walking as long as it had the strength.

    Hara Hara Shankara Jaya Jaya Shankara ! Mahaperiavaa had the quality of shedding anything immediately if he felt he should. That is how he has shown us the ways and means by which we can simplify one’s life.
