பரோபகாரம் பண்ண வேண்டுமென்பதே நமக்கு உண்டான ஒரு ‘கடன்’தான்! பிதிர்கடன் என்கிறோம். சாஸ்திரத்திலேயே ‘ருண த்ரயம்’ என்று மூன்று கடன்களைச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. பிராம்மண ஜன்மா எடுத்தவன் ரிஷிகளிடமும், தேவர்களிடமும், பித்ருக்களிடமும் கடன்பட்டிருக்கிறானென்றும் வேதாத்யனத்தால் ரிஷிக் கடன் தீர்கிறதென்றும், புத்ர ஸந்ததி உண்டு பண்ணுவதால் பிதிர் கடன் தீர்கிறதென்றும் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. வேத சாஸ்திரங்களிலேயே சொன்ன பஞ்ச மஹா யஜ்ஞங்களில் ‘ந்ரு யஜ்யம்’ என்பதாக மற்ற மனிதர்களுக்குப் பண்ணவேண்டியதும், ‘பூத யஜ்ஞம்’ என்பதாக எல்லா உயிரினங்களுக்குமே பண்ண வேண்டியதும் விதிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அதனால், மநுஷ்யர்கள் மிருகங்கள் பக்ஷிகள் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் நாம் ஆற்ற வேண்டிய பரோபகாரத்தையும் ‘கடன்’ என்றே சேர்த்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.  – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ   சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Philanthropy itself is a form of debt. We talk of debt to our ancestors -‘Pithru Kadan’. The scriptures describe three types of debts -‘Runa Thrayam’ They state that a person who has taken birth as a Brahmin is burdened with three kinds of debts – to the Rishis or the holy men, to the Devas or the celestial beings, and to the ancestors or Pithrus.  The debt to the Rishis is settled by Vedhaadhyayanam or the study of Vedas and that to the ancestors is settled through one’s progeny. Among the Pancha Maha yagnaas or the five important sacrificial rituals described by our Vedic scriptures, are ‘Nru Yagnam’ or that which as to be done to the human beings and Bootha yagnam, which has to be done to the other living beings like the birds and the animals.
