பரோபகாரம் என்பதைச் சொல்லும்போது, உபகாரம் பண்ணாவிட்டாலும் பர அபகாரம் எப்படியெப்படிப் பண்ணாமலிருக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் சொல்ல வேண்டுமல்லவா? Ten Commandments [கிறிஸ்தவர்களின் பத்துக் கட்டளைகள்] கூட எல்லாமே negative -ஆகத்தானே (இன்னின்னவற்றை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்பதற்குப் பதில் கூடாது என்பதாகத்தானே) இருக்கின்றன! வைதிகமான ஸாமான்ய தர்மங்களிலுள்ள அஸ்தேயம் (திருடாமை), யோக சாஸ்திரத்திலுள்ள அபரிக்ரஹம் (பொருள் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளாமை) என்பதாக ‘நெகடிவ்’ஆக உள்ள இரண்டுமே பரோபகாரத்துக்கு அங்கம்தான். இந்த இரண்டையும் பின்பற்றினால் கருமித்தனம், ஊதாரித்தனம், கடன் வாங்குவது எல்லாமே போய்விடும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
While talking of philanthropy it should be pointed out that even if we do not help someone, we should not harm him. This is the reason the Ten Commandments prescribed in Christianity are directions on what not to do rather than what to do! (In negative). Vedic dharma enjoins a person not to steal (Astheyam) and Yoga Shaastra directs a person not to gather wealth (Aparigraham). These principles are part of philanthropy.
