Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – Sri Periyava continues to drill on the importance of this King of Vratta’s (Ekadasi fasting) and how this is being observed by all classes of people right from great Kings to ordinary folks. What they got out as a result has also been highlighted by Periyava.

எல்லா வகுப்பாரும் ஏற்றம் பெற்றது

ராஜபோகம் என்றே சொல்வது வழக்கம். ராஜாக்கள் மது, மாம்ஸாதிகள் உள்பட ஓரளவுக்குச் சாப்பிடுவதற்கு அதிகாரம் பெற்றவர்கள். ஆனால் அவர்களும் ஏகாதசி உபவாஸத்தை நியமத்தோடு அநுஷ்டித்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஏகாதசி என்றவுடனே நாம் நினைக்கிற அம்பரீஷன், ருக்மாங்கதன் இரண்டு பேருமே க்ஷத்ரிய ராஜாக்கள்தான்.

கார்த்தாலே எழுந்தவுடன் குளிர்ந்த வேளையில், குளிர்ந்த மனஸோடு நினைத்து நமஸ்காரம் பண்ண வேண்டிய பரம பாகவதர்களைப் பற்றி ஒரு ச்லோகம் உண்டு.

ப்ரஹ்லாத நாரத பராசர புண்டரீக

வ்யாஸ (அ)ம்பரீஷ சுக சௌநக பீஷ்ம தால்ப்யான் |

ருக்மாங்கத (அ)ர்ஜுந வஸிஷ்ட விபீஷணாதீன்

புண்யான் இமான் பரம பாகவதான் ஸ்மராமி ||

இதிலே அம்பரீஷனும், ருக்மாங்கதனும் இடம் பெற்றதற்குக் காரணமே அவர்களுடைய ஏகாதசி அநுஷ்டானந்தான்.

ருக்மாங்கதன் தன் ராஜ்யத்தில் அத்தனை பேரையும் ஏகாதசி விரதம் இருக்கும்படியாகப் பண்ணினான். அதனால் ப்ரஜைகள் எல்லோரும் பக்தி ஞானங்களில் முன்னேறியதோடு நல்ல ஆயுர்-ஆரோக்யங்களுடனும் இருந்தார்கள் என்று நாரத புராணத்தில் இருக்கிறது.

ரொம்பவும் உச்சத்திலுள்ள ராஜாக்கள் மட்டுமில்லை. கைசிகன் என்று தீண்டாதார் வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்த பக்தர். இவரும் ஏகாதசி உபவாஸ நியமத்தால் உயர்வு பெற்றிருக்கிறார். ‘கைசிக ஏகாதசி’ என்றே ஒரு ஏகாதசிக்கு வைஷ்ணவர்கள் பெயர் சொல்வார்கள்.

Celebrated by all classes of people

It is referred to as Royal meal only.  Kings are somewhat authorised to consume food including liquor, meat etc.  But they have also observed Ekadasi fasting diligently.  Ambarasheen and Rukmangadan, the two persons who we immediately recollect when we talk of Ekadasi, were Kshatriya kings.

There is a sloka which is about the most holy persons/devotees (Bhagawathas), who one should think of and pay reverence to, right immediately after waking up, on a pleasant morning with cheerful mood.

Vyasa (A)mbareesha Suka Sounaga Bheeshma Thalapyan.

Rukmangada (A)rjuna Vasishta Vebheeshanadheen

Punyan Iman Parama Bhagawadan Smarami.

The reason why Ambareesha and Rukmangada find a place here is because of their observances of Ekadasi fasting.

Rukmangadan made all his subjects observe Ekadasi Vrata.  Therefore, it is said in Narada Purana that the people not only advanced in Bhakti and Jnana, but were also hale and healthy.

It is not only the Kings of the highest order.  There was one devotee by name Kaisikan, belonging to the untouchables.  He is also well-known because of observance of Ekadasi.  Vaishnavas have named one Ekadasi itself as ‘Kaisika Ekadasi’.
