ஒரு ஜீவன் இருக்கும் போதும், இறக்கும் போதும், இறந்த பின்பும் செய்ய வேண்டிய தொண்டுகளை நிறையச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போயிருக்கிறேன். ‘இறக்கும்போது நாம் செய்கிற பணியினால் அந்த ஜீவன் பகவத் ஸ்மரணையோடு உயிரை விட்டால் அது பகவானை அடைந்து விடுமல்லவா? இதற்கப்புறம் அதற்கு இறந்தபின் செய்ய வேண்டிய ஸம்ஸ்காரம், திவஸம், திங்கள் எல்லாம் எதற்குச் செய்ய வேண்டும்?’ என்று கேட்டுவிடக்கூடாது. ஏனென்றால் நமக்குத் தெரிவது அந்த ஜீவனின் அந்திம காலத்தில் அது பகவானை நினைக்கும்படியான முயற்சியை நாம் பண்ணுகிறோம் என்பதுதான். அந்த முயற்சி எவ்வளவு பலித்தது என்பது நமக்குத் தீர்மானமாகத் தெரியாது. நாம் கங்கா தீர்த்தம், விபூதி, துளஸி கொடுத்து நாமோச்சாரணம் பண்ணுவதை அந்த ஜீவன் எந்த அளவுக்கு மனஸுக்குள் வாங்கிக் கொண்டது என்பது நமக்குத் தெரியாது. அது பகவத் ஸ்மரணையோடுதான் உயிரை விட்டதா என்பது நமக்குத் தெரியாத விஷயம். ஆனதால், அது பகவானிடந்தான் போய்விட்டது என்று நாமாகத் தீர்மானம் பண்ணிக் கொண்டு அபரகார்யம், ச்ராத்தம் முதலானவைகளை நிறுத்திவிடக் கூடாது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

I have listed out a number of services to be done when a person is alive, at his final moments and after his death. Due to the service we perform at its final moments, a soul will leave the body with the contemplation of Bhagawan and reach His Divine Feet. But we should not question why we should continue with the rituals (Shraddham, Tharpanam, etc.) for a departed soul, if it has reached the abode of Bhagawan. What we know for sure is that we have made all attempts to make the soul think of the Divine in its last moments. We do not know how far this has been successful. We do not how much the soul absorbed all our attempts like application of the Vibhuthi (the Holy ash), the feeding of Thulasi or the chanting of the Divine Bhagawan Nama. We cannot know that it left the mortal coils with the thought of Bhagawan in the mind.
