ஏன் கங்கா ஸ்நானம்?

இப்படியாக தீபாவளியை நினைத்துக் கொண்டே பகவத்பாதாள் இந்த ச்லோகத்தைப் பண்ணின மாதிரி இருக்கிறது. அது இருக்கட்டும். ‘கங்கா ஸ்நானம்’ என்று ஏன் தீபாவளியன்று வைத்திருக்கிறது என்ற கேள்விக்குப் பதில் சொல்ல வந்தேன்.

’பிள்ளை போன நாளைப் பண்டிகையாக எல்லோரும் எந்தக் காலத்திலும் நின்று போகாமல் செய்து வரவேண்டும்’ என்று பூமாதேவி ஆசைப்பட்டாள். பண்டிகை என்பதால் மங்கள ஸ்நானம், புது வஸ்திர தாரணம், பக்ஷண போஜனம் எல்லாவற்றையும் ஏற்படுத்திக் கொடுத்தாள். இதிலே பிள்ளை நினைவு வரும்படி புதிசாக, நூதனமாக ஏதாவது இருக்க வேண்டுமென்று உதயத்துக்கு முந்தியே தைல ஸ்நானம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று வரம் வாங்கினாள். பகவானே இதற்கு ஒப்புக் கொண்டும் கூட, இப்படி சாஸ்திர விரோதமாக அப்யங்கனம் பண்ண யாராவது பயப்படப் போகிறார்களே என்று நினைத்து, பயம் போகும்படியாக என்ன செய்யலாம் என்று பார்த்தாள். ‘அன்றைக்கு அந்த வேளையில் தேய்த்துக் கொள்கிற எண்ணையில்  லக்ஷ்மியும், குளிக்கிற வெந்நீரில் கங்கையும் வஸிக்கும்படி செய்துவிட்டால் யாரும் பயப்பட மாட்டார்கள்;   லக்ஷ்மியும் கங்கையும் வேண்டாம் என்று எவருமே நினைக்க மாட்டார்கள். இதனால் ஸகல ஜனங்களுக்கும், பண்டிகை என்ற ஸந்தோஷத்துடன் புண்ணியம் என்பதும் கிடைக்கும்’ என்று நினைத்தாள். இதனால்தான் அந்த ஸ்நானத்துக்கு கங்கா ஸ்நானம் என்றே பேர் ஏற்பட்டது.

இப்படி கங்கா ஸ்நானம் பண்ணியவர்களுக்கு நரக பயமும், அபமிருத்யுவும் (அகால மரணம், கோர மரணம்) ரோகங்களும் ஏற்படாமலிருக்க வேண்டும் என்று கூடுதலாக நம்மெல்லோருக்காகவும் வரம் வாங்கித் தந்தாள். அவள் நரகனுக்கு மட்டுமில்லை, நம் எல்லோருக்குமே தாய் அல்லவா? Mother earth என்றே இங்கிலீஷில்கூடச் சொல்கிறார்களே! பசு, பூமி, வேதம் மூன்றையும் ஸகலருக்கும் தாயாராகவே சொல்லியிருக்கிறது.

இருந்தாலும் நரகனை நேரே தான் பெற்றதால் அவனிடம் அதிகப் பிரியம் வைத்து இந்த நாளுக்கு ‘நரக சதுர்த்தசி’ என்றே பேர் ஏற்பட வேண்டும் என்று வரம் வாங்கிக் கொண்டாள். ஆனாலும் இப்போது பஞ்சாங்கத்தில்தான் அந்தப் பேர் போட்டிருக்கிறதே தவிர, நாம் தீபாவளி என்றே சொல்கிறோம். ‘தீபாவளி’ என்றால் தீப வரிசை. வடக்கேதான் இப்படி விளக்கேற்றி வைத்து நிஜ தீபாவளியாக்க் கொண்டாடுகிறார்கள். நாம் கார்த்திகை தீபோத்ஸவம் என்று வைத்துக் கொண்டு விட்டோம்.

இதுவரைக்கும் நான் சொன்னதில் ஸார்மான கதாபாகம் அநேகமாக எல்லோருக்கும் தெரிந்திருக்கும். இப்போது தெரியாத கதைக்கு – காவேரி ஸ்நானக் கதைக்கு – போகிறேன்.

Why Ganga Snanam?

It looks like Bhagawath Padal had scripted this verse, thinking about Deepavali.  Let that be.  I was about to answer the question why this name “Ganga snanam” has been given for the (bath taken) on Deepavali day.

Bhooma Devi desired that the day her son was lost, should be observed as a festival for all times to come without any break.  Because it is a festival, she also ensured inclusion of holy bath, wearing of new clothes, eating sweets etc.  To ensure that there is something new and innovative so that her son is remembered, she obtained the boon, that the oil bath should be taken before sun rise.  Notwithstanding the acceptance of Bhagawan, she wanted to do something to remove the apprehension of those people who may be wary of doing this which was in contradiction to accepted principles.  So she thought that if it is made that Lakshmi will reside in the oil that we apply and Ganga matha reside in the hot water that we take bath, nobody will get scared and no one will think that they do not need Lakshmi or Ganga.  Therefore, she thought that, along with the joy of the festival, all the people will also get Punya.  That is why, this bath got the name of Ganga Snana.  

In addition, she also obtained for all of us, the boon that the persons who take this Ganga snanam should not get any fear of hell and also sudden or accidental (untimely and horrible) death and diseases.  Was she not a mother to not only Naraga but also to all of us?  Is she not referred to in English language, as “Mother Earth”!  It is said that Cow, Earth and Vedas are mother for all.

Anyway, since she had given birth to Naraga herself and had loved him much, she obtained the boon that this day should be named as “Naraga Chathurdasi”.  Despite that, while only in the almanac (Panchangam), it is referred to as such, we all call it “Deepavali”.  “Deepavali”, means, keeping lamps in a line.  Only in north india, it is celebrated really as a Deepavali by lighting the lamps this way.  We have taken to Karthigai Deepotsavam.

So far, in whatever I have said, almost everyone would have understood the essence of the story part.  Now I am going to the unknown story – Cauvery snana story.
