Sri Gurumurthi speaks on Hindutva, secularism etc

One of the finest speech – extraordinarily well-articulated, quoted clearly from indisputable sources. Everyone must listen to this and know what we are up to in today’s world.

Thanks Arun for sharing this in FB….

  2. The speech is very relevant, in the Cultural, perspective, but in my personal opiinion, considering the kind of Student, audience present, the main objective, should be the Economic Development and fighting Corruption, as without which, nothing happens anywhere else,in the World, as well, at the, least in the materlialistic sense. World can be United, only based on discussions and not just arguments and un necessary debates. Today’s wold is build because of yesterday’s Sacrifices, before and after Freedom struggle and otherwise, by Noble Souls, Tomorrow’s World is build byTtoday’s Sacrifice and the next generations’ World, should be based on the best and bitter expereicnes of previous generations.Whoever want to be enterprenurial can be enterprenurial, provided you have the right contacts and business intelligence and protection mechanisms and correct accounting. This opinion, is purely personal and in the economic sense only.

  3. I FULLLY AGREE WITH SHRI GURUMURTHY & DR SWANPON DAS GUPTA. CAN SITARAM (YECHURY) & RAM TO GO TO THE ISLAMIC NATIONS AND PREACH THEM PLURALISM?

    JAYA JAYA SHANKARA!
    HARA HARA SHANKARA!!

  4. Sri Gurumurthy’s speech is excellent and to the point. In his speeches and writings, he quotes sources which are unexceptionable and impeccable. It will be useful to have the exact references- if there is a transcript.
Left-oriented newspapers like The Hindu or the Times of India are not going to cover the full speech or even give a complete summary. I stopped reading The Hindu after N.Ram took over, after having been its regular reader for 50 years before that, because their famed objectivity and balance in reporting were lost under Ram.

Indian economists have all been followers of Western idols. Many people many not be aware that both Communism-Socialism and American 0r Western type Capitalism are two sides of the same coin viz. Materialism and are rooted in the same Classical economics, but emphasise different aspects. They are but branches of the same tree.

The Western economic advance was based on the so called ‘Protestant Ethic’ of thrift and work culture. The Roman Catholic establishment always sided with the powers. But its secret strength was colonialism which provided it with plentiful sources of cheap raw materials and ready markets. So, for 3 centuries, they progressed. But now as other countries started developing on their own, this is proving difficult. American military strength and its commercial manipulation through UN, World Bank, IMF and WTO are used to ensure their supremacy. But China has stolen the show.

It was Mahatma Gandhi who pointed out the flaws in the Western model of economic development. But his own chosen successor Nehru ditched him. [ But before that a group of Indian businessmen, including J.R.D.Tata had produced a plan called the “Bombay Plan” based on the then fashionable Western models of development.] However others have picked up Gandhi’s ideas and developed alternative models called variously as Sustainable , Steady-state, economy etc. E.F.Schumacher is the one who started the initiative. But before him our own J.C.Kumarappa wrote about the “Economy of Permanence” based on Indian insights. Richard B.Gregg wrote a critique of the Second Five year Plan and provided a Gandhian alternative in his book ” A Philosophy of Indian Economic Development” [1958]. Even P.T.Bauer of London School of Economics criticised the Second Plan based on orthodox economic ideas. But all these were ignored.

All Indian economists and political parties of all persuasions are still thinking in terms of the old Western ideas of development. Thus, P.M. Modi talks of ” make in India”. But make what?

Gurumurthy’s main point is that development cannot be divorced from the cultural moorings or perspectives. This is what even the UN and the World Bank have come to accept. The Western commercial leaders have accepted and followed this since long. However, Indian economists , especially of the leftist type, used to make fun of ‘the Hindu rate of growth” They did not realise how idiotic they were. Just consider this. Today, the US is taken as the most advanced economy, and every country is trying to follow it. THE US HAS LESS THAN 5% OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION BUT IS USING ABOUT 35% OF THE WORLD’S RESOURCES. WILL IT BE POSSIBLE FOR ALL COUNTRIES TO FOLLOW THIS MODEL?

The sum and substance is that there has to be voluntary restraints on consumption and exploitation of natural resources. This will cut at the very roots of our current ideas of GDP and the consumerist society. Which again means that our basic philosophy of life, and consequently our lifestyle will have to change!

Sri Gurumurthy is therefore absolutely right that a cultural perspective has to permeate and dictate our economic thinking. But I wonder whether he will be able to persuade his own brigade! He is so far ahead of the crowd! Today for most Indians, the Sun rises in the West!

  5. There is a wide range talks by Shri.S.Gurumurthy available on YouTube. Please spell his name as “S.Gurumurthy” and consider updating the post. Thanks.

  6. Do you know how The Hindu covered it?

Hindu religion’s ability to tolerate other faiths helped form the Indian definition of secularism: Gurumurthy.

While the idea of majoritarianism as nationalism arose from the treaties of Westphalia, India’s Constitution goes well beyond this notion, said CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury.

Mr. Yechury was speaking at a talk organised jointly by SASTRA University and The Hindu on the theme, “Idea of an Ideal India.” Journalist Swapan Dasgupta, columnist S. Gurumurthy and N. Ram, chairman of Kasturi & Sons Ltd. — which publishes The Hindu — were the other speakers on the panel, moderated by former Judge of the Madras High Court Prabha Sridevan.

“The sort of issues we are witnessing today — of intolerance, various other campaigns — are part of an effort to throw the evolution of the concept of India back to the Westphalian concept of the majority versus the minority,” said Mr. Yechury, referring to the 17 century treaties between Spain and the Dutch Republic.

He said the Indian Constitution’s idea of equality had gone above and beyond the concepts that helped establish the Peace of Westphalia.

Dr. Dasgupta attacked what he called Mr. Yechury’s constitutional patriotism. “Are we to believe that life began in 1947,” he asked, comparing the CPI(M) general secretary’s argument to post-Second World War Germany’s attempts at constructing a new national identity around its Constitution.

“Are we to reject all those constructs partly because they might have a slight brush with Hinduism?”

Dr. Dasgupta argued that matters of culture were best left out of the straitjacket of laws.

“The Constitution sets the ground rules for political behaviour … but a society, a country, a civilisation is much more than just the state. Acknowledge the complexities of India, acknowledge the silken thread that binds it all,” he said.

    ‘India is multi-everything’
Noting that India is “multi-everything; India is nothing if it is not pluralistic,” Mr. Ram said the Hindutva forces’ socio-political programme goes against the foundations of the country. “This is at odds with the values of our freedom struggle … Today, it is at odds with the values of the Constitution itself — not just with the Preamble, but the basic structure of the Constitution,” he said.

Mr. Ram said the disintegrative ideology of Hindutva was a threat to the Indian state. “When the RSS supremo, its Sargsanghchalak, Mr. Mohan Bhagwat, says that India is a Hindu nation and Hindutva, its identity, it strikes a deadly blow at the values of our great historical civilisation,” he said.

Mr. Gurumurthy, also a Distinguished Research Professor of Legal Anthropology at SASTRA University, called for a model of development that included elements of culture.

“Culture is the basic drive of development,” he said, warning against abandoning the Indian culture in favour of Western models of development. It was the Hindu religion’s ability to tolerate other religions that helped form the Indian definition of secularism, he said. “If India is not Hindu, it would never have been secular.”

In a rebuttal to Mr. Gurumurthy, Mr. Yechury clarified that his opposition was to Hindutva. He quoted V.D. Savarkar to say it had nothing to do with the Hindu religion.
