இந்தக் காலத்தில் இருக்கிற நாமெல்லோரும் அஸ்வமேத யாகம் செய்ய முடியுமா? ‘இதென்ன கேள்வி? ஸ்வாமிகள் சரியாகத்தான் பேசுகிறாரா?’ என்று தோன்றும். ‘இந்தக் காலத்திலாவது? அஸ்வமேதமாவது? பழைய காலத்திலேயே க்ஷத்ரிய வர்ணத்தில் பிறந்த மஹாராஜாக்கள் இரண்டொருத்தர் தான் அஸ்வமேதம் செய்ய முடிந்திருக்கிறது. நம்மில் யாரவது அஸ்வமேதம் செய்ய முடியுமா என்று கேட்காமல் (இப்படிக் கேட்டாலே அஸம்பாவிதம்தான்!) நாம் எல்லோரும் அஸ்வமேத யாகம் செய்ய முடியுமா என்று கேட்கிறேனே என்று ஒரே குழப்பமாகத் தோன்றும்.

முடியுமா, முடியாதா என்பது ஓரு பக்கம் இருக்கட்டும். எதற்காக அஸ்வமேதம் செய்ய வேண்டும்? நம் பதவியையும் பவிஷையும் அது காட்டுகிறதே என்பதற்கா? அஸ்வமேதம் செய்தல் இந்திரலோகம் கிடைக்கும் என்பதற்கா? இதற்காகவெல்லாம் என்றால் அஸ்வமேதம் செய்யவே வேண்டாம். பதவி, பவிஷு, தேவலோக ஸெளக்கியம் எல்லாமே அஹங்காரத்தை வளர்த்துக் கொள்கிற காரியங்கள்தாம்! நம்மிடம் கொஞ்சநஞ்ச ஞானம்கூடச் சேரவொட்டாமல் இடைஞ்சல் செய்கிறவைதாம். பின் எதற்காக அஸ்வமேதம் என்றால்:

ஹயமேத ஸமர்ச்சிதா

என்று அம்பாளுக்கு லலிதா த்ரிசதியில் ஒரு நாமா சொல்லியிருக்கிறது.

‘த்ரிசதி’ என்பது முந்நூறு பெயர்கள் கொண்ட நாமாவளி. அர்ச்சனையில் பிரயோஜனமாவது ‘ருத்ர த்ரிசதி’ என்பது வேதத்திலிருந்தே எடுத்தது. ‘லலிதா த்ரிசதி’ வேதத்தில் இல்லாவிட்டாலுங்கூட அதற்கு ஸமதையான கௌரவம் பெற்றிருக்கிறது. ஹயக்ரீவரிடமிருந்து ‘லலிதா ஸஹஸ்ரநாம’ உபதேசம் பெற்றுங்கூட மனசாந்தி அடையாத அகஸ்தியர் இந்த த்ரிசதியைக் கேட்டுத்தான் தெளிவை அடைந்தார். ஆசார்யாளே பாஷ்யம் பண்ணியிருக்கிற பெருமையும் இந்த த்ரிசதிக்கு இருக்கிறது.

ஹயம் ஹயம் என்றால் அச்வம், குதிரை என்று அர்த்தம். கழுத்துக்கு மேலே குதிரை முகம் படைத்த மஹாவிஷ்ணுவின் அவதாரமாக இருப்பவரே ஹய-க்ரீவர். ஹயமேதம் என்றாலும் அஸ்வமேதம் என்றாலும் ஒரே அர்த்தந்தான். ”ஸமர்ச்சிதா” என்றால் நன்றாக, பூர்ணமாக ஆராதிக்கப்படுபவள் என்று அர்த்தம். ”ஹயமேத ஸமர்ச்சிதா”- அஸ்வமேத யாகத்தால் நன்கு ஆராதிக்கப்படுபவள். அதாவது ஒருத்தன் அஸ்வமேதம் செய்தால், அதுவே அவன் அம்பாளுக்குச் செய்கிற விசேஷமான ஆராதனையாகி விடுகிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Will all of us living in today’s world be able to perform Ashwameda Yagna? You may start wondering why Swamigal is asking such a question which can elicit an answer only in the negative. Even in the olden days of Kings and Emperors, only one or two emperors were able to perform Ashwameda Yagna. In the modern days even one or two ordinary citizens like us cannot perform this yagna. Then where is the question of all of us performing this yagna?  Leaving aside all these discussions, the moot question is why we should conduct this yagna. Is it because it is a symbol of power and wealth and can bestow on us the crown of the King of Heavens – Indra? No. These benefits can only inflate our ego and hinder our spiritual progress.  Ambal or Mother Goddess is eulogized as “Hayameda Samarchithaa” in Lalitha Thrisathi. Thrisathi is a collection of three hundred names. Rudra Thrisathi is in the Vedas. Though Lalitha Thrisathi is not present in the Vedas, it is still considered equal to these Holy Scriptures. Sri Adi Shankara himself has annotated (Bashiyam) this Thrisathi. Sage Agasthya felt restless even after learning lalitha Sahasranamam from Hayagreeva found clarity of mind only after learning Thrisathi. Hayam or Ashwam means a horse. Hayagreeva is the horse faced incarnation of Maha Vishnu. Haymedam and Ashwamedam have the same meaning, Samarchitha means the one who is worshipped wholeheartedly in all Her fullness.
