ஒரு கேள்வி தோன்றும், உடம்பை விட்டுப் போன ஜீவனின் த்ருப்திக்காக ச்ராத்தம் முதலானவை செய்வது பரோபகாரம் என்றால் ஸரிதான். ஆனால் ஜீவன் (உயிர்) போன இந்த வெறும் உடம்புக்கு எதற்கு ஸம்ஸ்காரம் என்று தோன்றலாம். சாஸ்திரங்களைக் கூர்ந்து பார்த்தால் ஒரு ஜீவன் சரீரத்தை விட்டுப் போய்விட்டாலும், அதன் அங்கங்களில் கண்ணில் ஸூர்யன், வாயில் அக்னி, கையில் இந்திரன் என்றெல்லாம்மிருக்கும் தேவாம்சங்கள் உடனே அதனதன் மூலஸ்தானத்துக்குப் போய்விடவில்லை என்று தெரிகிறது. பிரேத ஸம்ஸ்காரத்தின் மூலம்தான் அவற்றை அதனதன் ஸ்தானத்துக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கிறோம். அபர மந்த்ரங்களைப் பார்த்தால் தெரியும். ஜீவாத்மா என்கிற புருஷன் பதினாறு கலை உள்ளவன் என்பார்கள். இதில் பதினைந்து கலைகள் மட்டுமே உயிராக இருப்பது என்றும், உடம்பும் ஒரு கலை என்றும், எனவே உயிர் போன பின்னும் ஒரு கலை உள்ள அந்த உடலை ஈஸ்வரார்ப்பணமாக்கவே பிரேத ஸம்ஸ்காரம் தேவைப்படுகிறது என்றும் ஒரு அபிப்ராயம் உண்டு. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

A question may arise as to why we should conduct the prescribed rituals for a dead person, considering it as a philanthropic act. If we keenly observe the Sastras, it will become clear that even after the soul leaves the body, many heavenly beings or Devathas continue to be present in various parts of the body- Surya or the Sun god in the eyes, Agni or the fire god in the mouth and Indra or the King of heaven in the hands. These heavenly beings do not return to their place of origin immediately. We bid farewell to them and send them to their places of origin only through the ritualistic disposal of the body. This becomes clear when we study the holy chants used during this ritual. Jeevaathma or the earthly being is said to be made of 16 parts. 15 parts constitute the soul and the remaining one is the body.
