“தனக்குத் மிஞ்சித் தர்மம்” என்பதற்கு நான் புது வியாக்யானம் செய்கிறேன்: எது உயிர் வாழ்வதற்கு அத்யாவச்யமோ, எதெல்லாம் இல்லாவிட்டால் உயிர் வாழ முடியாதோ, அந்த bare necessities-க்குத் தேவையானதைத் தான் ‘தனக்கு’ என்று இங்கே சொல்லியிருப்பதாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். இல்லாவிட்டால், ‘தனக்கு’ என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டு, ஆடம்பரச் செலவுகள் பண்ணிக் கொண்டே போய் எத்தனை வருமானம் வந்தாலும் தானம் பண்ண ஒன்றுமே இல்லாமல் ஆக்கிக் கொள்வதாகத்தான் முடியும். ஸொந்தச் செலவுகளை அவசியத்திற்கு அதிகமாக எவரும் வைத்துக் கொள்ளாவிட்டால்தான் தனக்கு மிஞ்சிக் கையில் தர்மத்துக்குப் பணமே இருக்கும். முடிவில்லாமல் தனக்கென்று ஆடம்பர போக்யங்களை (Luxuries) பெருக்கிக் கொண்டே போய்விட்டு, “தனக்கு மிஞ்சித் தர்மம் பண்ண எதுவுமே இல்லை” என்று கைவிரித்தால் அது நியாயமில்லை. ஆனதால், தனக்கென்று எவ்வளவு குறைவாகச் செலவழிக்க முடியுமோ, அப்படி எளிமையாக வாழ்ந்து, மிச்சம் பிடித்து, அதைத் தர்மத்துக்குச் செலவழிப்பதுதான் “தனக்கு மிஞ்சித் தர்மம்”. தர்மம் பண்ணியே ஆகவேண்டுமே! வேதத்தில் ‘தர்மம் சர’ என்றும், படிப்பு ஆரம்பத்திலேயே அவ்வை ‘அறம் செய விரும்பு’ என்றும் சொல்லியிருப்பதைச் செய்தேயாக வேண்டுமே! ஆனதால், நமக்கு வரும்படி எவ்வளவு குறைச்சலாயிருந்தாலும் அதற்குள் தர்மம் பண்ணும்படியாகவும் செலவைக் கட்டுப்படுத்திக்கொண்டு ‘தனக்கு மிஞ்சும்’ படிப் பண்ண வேண்டும் என்றே இந்த வசனத்தை அர்த்தம் பண்ணிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். அப்படிச் செய்தால் எவனுமே தர்மத்துக்காகச் சேமித்துத்தான் ஆகவேண்டும் என்றாகும். அதாவது, எவனுமே கடன்படமாட்டான்! இது ஒரு பெரிய ஸ்வய உபகாரம்! –  ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

I want to give a new interpretation to the proverb that one should spend on charity only after taking care of the self. We should realize that this proverb refers only to the bare necessities of life. Otherwise, in the name of self, expenditure on luxuries will increase and there will be nothing left to spare for charity. There is no justice in expanding the boundaries of one’s requirements and then display empty hands when the need for charity arises. So the true meaning of the proverb is that one should lead as simple a life as possible and spend the money thus saved on acts of charity. Charity has to be practiced in life. Vedas insist upon this and the saint poetess Avvaiyaar commences the Tamizh lessons with this instruction (Desire to help). The true meaning of this is that we should lead a simple life, control our expenditure, and perform charity after retaining what is essential for us.
