Experiences with Maha Periyava: Recite the following mantra 108 times!

Once a Sri Vaishnavite family had come for the darshan of Sri Maha Periyava. Even though they followed the Sri Vaishnava tradition, they had deep devotion (bhakti) towards Sri Maha Periyava and believed that He was Sakshat Sriman Narayana Swaroopam. They had come to have darshan of Periyava since the head of their family who was old was suddenly suffering from paralysis and chitta bramhai (paranoia). They had come there with the whole family.

Sri Maha Periyava asked them to be seated. He then asked for a small pot of water to be brought. Once it was brought, He put some tulsi leaves in the pot of water from the mala (garland) He was wearing. As they belonged to the Sri Vaishanavite tradition, He then advised all the family members to recite the following mantra 108 times.

Achyutananda Govinda Namoch Charana Bheshajat
Nashyanti Sakala Rogaha Satyam Satyam Vadamyaham

All the family members devotedly did as they were instructed. Periyava then sprinkled some water on the paralytic man. He then asked a strong, hefty man who was present there to give a sharp blow on the affected man’s head. Everyone hesitated and no one was willing to hit the affected man. How could they strike a sick man?

But Sri Maha Periyava’s leelas (divine plays) are amazing. Finally, a strong hefty man came forward willing to do as instructed. He clenched his fist and raised his arm to give a hard blow on the affected man’s head. The invalid man suddenly started speaking and asked, “Why are you trying to hit me?” All the family members were surprised. The motionless man speaking made all the family members extremely happy. Sri Maha Periyava’s boundless grace and the water sprinkled on him made him regain his consciousness and lost memory.

All the family members were extremely grateful and happy and thanked Sri Maha Periyava profusely and offered their prostrations and expressed their gratitude to Sri Maha Periyava.

  5. There is a slightly different version of this story which I have seen. The person who came to Mahaperiyava had a memory loss as opposed to suffering from paralysis. The family/friends visit the mutt after visiting several Vaishnava temples. That is when His Holiness asks a strong man to make a “kuttu” on the head of the person who had memory loss, after repeating this sloka 108 times. Finally, His Holiness tells them that their visiting all the vaishnava kshtrAs helped them get the blessings of Lord Narayana. As usual, His Holiness does not take the credit for solving the problem.

We would have heard of the vedic mantra “trayambakam yajAmahe…” as the mRityunjaya mantrA. Vedic mantras should be chanted with the correct swarAs, Otherwise they do not give the required benefit. That is why they are not prescribed for everyone.

For everyone to have the same benefit, we have regular mantrAs in Sanskrit or other languages. This mantrA is also the mRityunjaya mantra, anyone can chant. As the meaning of the slokA goes, simply chanting “Achuta, ananta, Govinda” will destroy all the diseases. It is the TRUTH, and confirmed TRUTH (bacause of the repetition of the word satyam).

My mother’s uncle, who did a lot of sevA to Pujya Sri. MahAperiyavA has told us the importance of this mantrA as he heard from His Holiness. Disease is not just physical issue; it includes mental afflictions and depression also. The worst disease is AgYAna (false knowledge of identifying oneself as the body and forgetting the true Self). The simple truth is the name of the Lord purifies.

Because of from whom I have heard about this sloka, when someone comes to me and tells me any health related problem, I suggest that person to repeat “Achuta, ananta, Govinda” or “achutAnantagovinda”.

  6. Sri Maha Periva thiruvadigal saranam

  7. We are very small to make any comments except saying Hara hara shankara jays jaya shankara

  8. hara hara sankara jaya jaya sankara.

  9. Shri Mahaperiyava Charanam.
