In the ancient days, reciting Vedas, performing yagnas, worship, meditation and Vidyadhaanam or educating pupils freely were the sole occupation of a Brahmin. Hence he had the right to receive charity for the sake of supporting his family. A Sannyasi (monk) in the journey of spiritual attainment had the right to accept Bhiksha or charity.
