இப்போதெல்லாம் ரொம்பப் பேருக்கு ஒரு தப்பு அபிப்பிராயம் இருக்கிறது. அதாவது ‘புத்தர், ஜீஸஸ், நபி எல்லோரும் அஹிம்ஸை, அன்பு, ஸஹோதரத்வம் ஆகியவற்றைச் சொன்ன மாதிரி வைதிக மதத்தில் சொல்லவில்லை. வைதிக மதத்தில் எப்போது பார்த்தாலும் கர்மாநுஷ்டானம் என்று ஏதாவது யாகம், யஜ்ஞம், திவஸம், தர்ப்பணம் இந்த மாதிரியும், பெரிய பெரிய பூஜை உத்ஸாவதிகளும், விரதம், யோகம், ஞான விசாரம் இதுகளும்தான் சொல்லியிருக்கிறதே தவிர, ஜீவகாருண்யத்தைப்பற்றி ஒன்றுமே இல்லை’ என்று ஓர் அபிப்ராயம் இருக்கிறது. நம் சாஸ்திரங்களில் வர்ணாச்ரமப்படி அவரவருக்கான அநுஷ்டானங்களை, ஸம்ஸ்காரங்களைச் சொல்வதற்கு முன் ஒவ்வொரு ஜீவனுக்கும் இருக்க வேண்டிய எட்டு ஆத்ம குணங்களைச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது; ஸாமான்ய தர்மங்கள் என்ற பெயரில் சில ஒழுக்க நெறிகளைச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. ஸாமான்ய தர்மங்களில் முதலாவதே அஹிம்ஸைதான். ஸத்யம்கூட இதற்கு அப்புறம்தான் வருகிறது. அந்த ஸத்யத்துக்கும் definition (லக்ஷணம்) கொடுக்கிறபோது, “ஸத்யம் பூதஹிதம் ப்ரியம்“

அதாவது, ஸத்யம் என்பது வெறுமனே நடந்ததை நடந்தபடி வாயால் சொல்கிறது மட்டுமில்லை, எது ஜீவராசிகளுக்கு ஹிதமானதாக, பிரியமானதாக இருக்கிறதோ அதுவே ஸத்யம் என்றுதான் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. இப்படியே நாற்பது ஸம்ஸ்காரங்களுக்கு முந்திச் சொல்லியிருக்கிற அஷ்டகுணங்களில் முதலாவதாக, “தயா ஸர்வ பூதேஷு”

”எல்லா ஜீவராசிகளிடமும் அருள் இருக்க வேண்டும்”என்று அன்புக்கே முக்யத்வம் தந்திருக்கிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
 

Many people have a wrong impression that Vedic religion never advocated non-violence, love and brotherhood like Buddha, Jesus and Mohammed Nabi did. They feel that Vedic religion only preached rituals like Yagam, Yagnam, elaborate modes of worship, Yoga, Holy observances like Vratams and Philosophical enquiries. Compassion to fellow living beings or Jeeva Karunyam was left out. This is an entirely wrong opinion. Our Shastras, while prescribing the duties to everyone as per Varnashrama Dharma, have also identified eight spiritual qualities which are mandatory for every living being. They have also stipulated certain virtues under the nomenclature of Samanya Dharma. First and foremost among these qualities is non-violence. Even Truth comes only after this. And while delineating the quality of truth, it states “Sathyam Boothahitham Priyam”. In other words, truth should not be a mere recital of facts verbatim. Truth should not hurt others- it should be soothing to them, liked by them. Similarly, among the eight spiritual qualities which take precedence before the forty Samskaras or duties, what comes first is ‘Daya Sarva Bootheshu’- compassion towards all living beings.
