மனஸ் சுத்தமாக இருந்தால்தான் பரோபகாரம் நிஜமாக நடக்கிறது, பலன் தருகிறது; பரோபகாரத்தால் தான் இவன் மனஸே சுத்தமாகத் தொடங்குகிறது என்றால் Contradiction (முரண்) மாதிரித்தானே இருக்கிறது? ஆனால் முரண்பாடு இல்லை. முதலில் இவனுக்கு மனஸ் சுத்தமாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற தாபம் இருந்தாலே போதும். மனஸ் லேசில் கட்டுப்பட்டு வரத்தான் வராது. இந்திரிய ஸெளக்யத்தையே நினைத்து அது திரும்பத் திரும்ப ஓடிக் கொண்டுதான் இருக்கும். அப்போது, ‘ஐயோ, இது திருந்த வேண்டுமே! ‘என்ற உண்மையான கவலை இருந்தால் இந்த விசாரத்துக்கே ஒரு நல்ல சக்தி (effect) உண்டு. இப்படி ஒரு தாபத்தோடு பரோபகார காரியங்கள் என்ற லகானைப் போட்டு அப்போதப்போதும் ஓடுகிற மனஸை இழுத்து ஒரு பொதுத் தொண்டில் செலுத்த வேண்டும். ஒன்றுக்கொன்று போஷித்து இட்டு நிரப்புவது, Complementary என்கிறார்களே, அப்படிப், பரோபகாரப் பணி மனஸைக் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக சுத்தம் பண்ணப் பண்ண, அந்தச் சித்த சுத்தியால் நாம் செய்கிற தொண்டும் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக சுத்தமாகிக் கொண்டு சக்தியோடு பலன் தர ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. இப்படிப் பரோபகாரமும் ஆத்மாபிவிருத்தியும் ஒன்றுக்கொன்று கைகோத்துக் கொண்டு, பரஸ்பரம் பலம் தந்து கொண்டு வளர்கின்றன. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Only when a person’s heart is pure, philanthropy actually takes place and is also effective.  But, interestingly, performing this service alone will purify his heart. This seems to be contradictory but, essentially, it is not so. There should be a yearning within a person to be pure of heart and mind. The mind cannot be easily controlled and will always seek to indulge in sensual pleasures. But, at the same time, if there is a desperate desire in the heart to travel in the righteous path, that very desire has a positive effect. Along with this yearning, one should perform acts of public service. Like bridle to a horse, these will prevent the mind from straying away. Like two forces of complementary nature, the acts of philanthropy cleanse the mind and the purity of mind, in turn, purifies the services we perform and enhances their effects.
