அசையாது நின்ற ஸ்ரீமடத்து பயில்வானும் .ஓசையின்றி ஓடிய வெளியூர் பயில்வானும்”

(ஒரு பயில்வான் மிகவும் வீறாப்புடன் மடத்துக்கு
வரப் போகிறான் என்பது பெரியவாளுக்கு எப்படித் தெரிந்தது?)

அது தான் புதிர்!.

ஒரு சமயம் பயில்வான் ஒருவர் காஞ்சிப் பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க வரவேண்டும் என்ற தன்னுடைய விருப்பத்தை தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.

ஒரு பிடி எள்ளை அவரிடம் கொடுத்தால், அதை எண்ணெய்யாக்கி விடும் அளவுக்கு பலசாலி.

காஞ்சிப் பெரியவரின் முன்னிலையில் தன் திறமையை வெளிப்படுத்த வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் அவருக்கு இருந்தது. தன்னை விட வேறு திறமையான பயில்வான் இல்லை என்று அவர் கர்வமும் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

விஷயத்தை அறிந்த காஞ்சிப் பெரியவர் அவருக்கு தகுந்த பாடம் புகட்ட எண்ணினார்.

மணக்கால் நாராயணன் சாஸ்திரிகள் என்ற பக்தர் காஞ்சி மடத்திற்கு அடிக்கடி வந்து சொல்லக் கூடியவர். நல்ல உடற்கட்டும், உயரமும் கொண்ட சாஸ்திரிகள் பார்ப்பதற்கு பயில்வான் போலவே காட்சி தருவார்.

அவரை அழைத்த சுவாமிகள், “இன்று முழுவதும் ஸ்ரீமடத்து வாசலிலேயே நிற்க வேண்டும்,” என்று சாஸ்திரிகளுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டார்.

பெரியவரின் உத்தரவைக் கேட்ட சாஸ்திரிகளும், மற்ற மடத்து தொண்டர்களும் புரியாமல் விழித்தனர். இருந்தாலும், பெரியவரின் கட்டளைக்கு பணிந்து அன்று முழுவதும் சாஸ்திரிகள் வாசலிலேயே கம்பீரமாக நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார்.

அன்றைய தினம் வருவதாகச் சொல்லியிருந்த பயில்வான் மடத்திற்கு வரவே இல்லை. மாலை நேரமும் வந்து விட்டது. பயில்வானின் நண்பர் ஒருவர் மெதுவாக மடத்திற்குள் நுழைந்தார்.

அவர் மடத்திலிருந்த சிஷ்யர்களிடம், “வேத பண்டிதர்கள் மட்டும் தான் மடத்தில் இருப்பார்கள் என்று கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால், மடத்து வாசலிலே பயில்வான்களும் இருப்பார்கள் என்பதை இன்று நேரிலேயே பார்க்கிறேன்,” என்றவர், இன்னொரு தகவலையும் சிஷ்யர்களிடம் சொன்னார்.

“இன்று பெரியவரைப் பார்ப்பதற்கு வருவதாகச் சொன்னாரே பயில்வான்! அவரும் நானும் ஒன்றாகத்தான் வந்தோம். மடத்து வாசலுக்கு வந்ததும், அங்கே ஒரு பயில்வான் நிற்பதைப் பார்த்தார். என்ன நினைத்தாரோ தெரியவில்லை. என்னை மட்டும் உள்ளே அனுப்பி விட்டு அவர் ஏதோ ஒரு பயத்துடன் ஓடியே விட்டார்,” என்றார்.

இதனைக் கேட்ட அனைவரும் சிரித்து மகிழ்ந்ததோடு, சுவாமிகளிடமும் இதைத் தெரிவித்தனர். அன்றுமுதல் மணக்கால் நாராயணன் சாஸ்திரிகளுக்கு “ஸ்ரீமடத்து பயில்வான் ‘ என்ற பெயரே நிலைத்துவிட்டது.

ஒரு பயில்வான் மிகவும் வீறாப்புடன் மடத்துக்கு வரப் போகிறான் என்பது பெரியவாளுக்கு எப்படித் தெரிந்தது?

அது தான் புதிர்!

Once a wrestler wished to meet Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava.

The wrestler was so powerful, when he was given a handful of sesame seeds he could turn it into oil by his sheer physical strength.

This wrestler was keen to display his muscular power and strength to Maha Periyava at Sri Matam. He was also proud of the fact that none could match his power and strength.

As the omnipotent Periyava realized this, he wanted to teach the wrestler a lesson.

At the same time, a devotee named Manakkaal Narayanan Sastrigal visited Sri Matam frequently. He was tall, well-built and resembled a wrestler.

HH Periyava called for Sri. Manakkaal Narayanan Sastrigal and ordered him to guard the Sri Matam entrance for the day.

Listening to Periyava’s words Shri. Manakkaal Narayanan Sastrigal and the others in the Matam were surprised. But the devoted Shri. Manakkaal Narayanan Sastrigal carried out Sri Periyava’s order and stood at the entrance for the whole day.

The wrestler who was supposedly visiting Periyava, didn’t turn up at the Sri Matam. As the sun set, his friend slowly walked into the Sri Matam.

He told the Anuka Thondar (one who serves Periyava) and the people present at Sri Matam – “I’ve always heard of Veda Pundits visiting Sri Matam, but today I got to see a wrestler at the entrance”.

He also told the Anuka Thondar, as I and my wrestler friend were supposed to visit Maha Periyava today, when we approached the entrance together we saw another well-built wrestler at the entrance. My wrestler friend was startled at this and hastily ran away.

The people who heard this, shared it with Periyava and had a hearty laugh. From that day Manakkaal Narayanan Sastrigal was officially known as the Sri Matam wrestler.

How Periyava knew a wrestler was visiting Sri Matam? Still remains a puzzle!
