அகத்திய மகரிஷிக்கு லலிதா சகஸ்ரநாமத்தின்
பெருமைகளை பின்வருமாறு கூறுகிறார்.
தேவியின் ஆயிரம் நாமங்களை உமக்குக் கூறினேன்.
இவை ரகசியங்களுள் ரகசியமானது. இதைப் போன்ற துதி ஒன்றுமில்லை. இது நோய்களைப்போக்கும்.
செல்வத்தை அளிக்கும். அபமிருத்யுவைப் போக்கும். (அப மிருத்யு என்றால்
அகால மரணம்) நீண்ட ஆயுள் தரும்.
பிள்ளைப் பேறு இல்லாதவர்களுக்கு பிள்ளைச் செல்வம் தரும்.
கங்கை முதலியப புண்ணிய நதிகளில் முறைப்படி
பலதடவை நீராடுதல், காசியில் கோடி லிங்கப் பிரதிஷ்ட்டை செய்தல், க்ரஹன காலத்தில் கங்கைக் கரையில் அசுவமேத யாகம் செய்தல், பஞ்ச காலங்களில் நீர் வசதியற்ற இடங்களில் கிணறு வெட்டுதல், தொடர்ந்து அன்னதானம் செய்தல், இவை எல்லாவற்றையும்விட மிகுந்தப் புண்ணியமானது லலிதா சகஸ்ரனாமப் பாராயணம்.
இது பாவத்தை நீக்கும். பாவத்தை நீக்க இதனைவிட்டு வேறு உபாயம் தேடுபவன் பயனில்லாதவன் .
பௌர்ணமியன்று சந்திர பிம்பத்தில் தேவியை தியானம் செய்து வழிபட்டு இதனைப் படிக்க நோய்கள் நீங்கும்.
பூத பிசாச உபாதைகள் விலகும். இதனைப் பாராயணம் செய்யும் பக்தனின் நாவில் சரஸ்வதி தேவி நர்த்தனம் ஆடுவாள்.
எதிரிகளை பேசமுடியாது வாக்ஸ்தம்பம் செய்து விடுவாள்.
அரசனே எதிர்த்தாலும் அன்னையின் பக்தனிடம் தோல்வி அடைவான்.
இதனைப் பாராயணம் செய்பவன் பார்வை பட்டாலே தோஷங்கள் விலகிவிடும்.
ஸ்ரீ வித்யை போன்று மந்திரமோ, ஸ்ரீலலிதாம்பிகையைப் போன்று தேவதையோ, லலிதா சகஸ்ரநாமம் போன்று ஸ்தோத்திரமோ உலகில் இல்லை.
பூர்வ ஜென்ம புண்யத்தால் மட்டுமே இதனைப் பாராயணம் செய்யும் வாய்ப்பு கிட்டும்.
கடைசிப் பிறவியாக இருந்தால் மட்டுமே ஸ்ரீவித்யா ஜெபமும், சகஸ்ரநாம பாராயணமும் செய்யமுடியும்.
தேவியின் அருளின்றி யாரும் இதனைப்பெறமுடியாது” என்றெல்லாம் பலவாறாக பலச்ருதி என்ற பகுதியில் ஹயக்ரீவர் அகத்தியருக்கு உபதேசிக்கிறார்.
லலிதா சகஸ்ரநாமத்தில் இன்னொரு சிறப்பு இதைப் பாராயணம் செய்யும்போது நமது சமயத்தின்அனைத்து கடவுளையும் வழிபட்ட புண்ணியம் நமக்கு சேரும்.
எனவே லலிதா சகஸ்ரநாமத்தின் பொருள் அறிந்து பாராயணம் செய்ய முயலுங்கள், எதை அடைய விரும்புகிறீர்களோ அது தானாய் வந்து சேரும்.

After reading the above discussions I would like to share a small incident. Last september I had a dream where mahaperiyava was sitting and he asked me to come near him. He said “Sollu Vishvam Vishur Vashatkaarah.” I ran off. He again called me to recite after him which I did. I was thinking about this for a very long time. But now I have started to recite Vishnu Sahasranamam every day. I feel my day is a waste if I don’t recite it.
Where I can get the Dr Radhakrishna sastrigal book on Lalitha Sahasnaman? pl reply Why cant you make in Pdf book form so that we can download this?

I hope my personal experiences will be of some help to the Astikas here
as I find these Dharma Sastram questions flare up and
engender a lot of debates from time to time in this forum.
This blog has given me the necessary impetus to follow our Shastras to the best of
my ability and I am very thankful for it. At the same time conflicting opinions abound
(after all if you are a Smarta or a Vaishnava our respective
Adi acharyas don’t agree on the Siddhantam, what then to speak of practices). In the
beginning I used to get confused by these conflicting opinions on practices such as the
question raised here.
My aathu vadyar (house Vadhyar) is Sri. Sarma Sastrigal (of our Sri Matham who also brings
out various books on our anushtanmans as per Nadu Periyava and Bala Periyav Uthharavu)
and I had asked him the general approach to these issues. Here is what I gleaned from him and his teachings and guidance to me over the last 4 years. I hope they are useful to some one on what approach to follow:
(These are his guidance to me, so not my opinions. If it does not apply to you, you can leave it.
I am just illustrating a practical approach that has worked for me, given by my Vadhyar. I am not here
to debate these.)
1. Our Shastrams are paramount. Even Paramatma Lord Krishna to Arjuna in Ch.16 dosen’t say, I tell you so, but rather this is what the Shastrams say.. So we need Shraddha towards our Shastras.
2. If you have to follow the Shastrams first have an Aathu Vadhyar / Your Guru who is your guide in these
matters. (Earlier days we had aathu vadhyar, our elders in the house and of course our ladies of the house who is the last resort and if all this fails the 4th Varna persons who are familiar with our family customs).
3. Don’t rely on “Internet Brihaspathis” however well meaning they may be. Following
Shastras is like medicine administered for our affliction to Samsara. Just like you will not
dream of going to different doctors for the same ailment, it does not make sense asking 4 people on
the road to get 6 opinions. You will go nowhere.
4. The people who quote books and other sources do not have the necessary Yogyathai or the ability
to dispense advice to all. They will parrot what is given but cannot find what is the right thing to follow for your unique situation. Trust your Vadhyar or Guru (who have lived these Shastras and assimilated them)
implicitly and follow what they say when ever you get these doubts.
5. In the beginning it is important to start following the practice than endless debates
about the best way to do something. But pray to Ambal / Parameswaran sincerely that they
give you the ability follow the Sastras and ask for forgiveness for your transgressions.
As you progress, you will yourself develop an abhiruchi to find out our Shastrams and an Utsaham
to follow them in letter and spirit and you will miraculously start getting guidance on these.
I can say this with conviction from my limited following.
One also learns that is a never ending lifelong process and mortals
like us can never follow the Shastram 100% (this applies to our internet
self styled Brihaspathis as well). An avataram like Mahaperiyava can follow 100% and
show us the ideal to aspire to.
6. There is no second opinion on not following the Shastras. We must follow it. But one
has to crawl, then take baby steps and then run in this aspect.
7. Don’t go deep into Sastric do’s and dont’s as they will
paralyse you from doing action (Exact words: Shastratthai
romba nonda vendam. Manak Kashtam than minjum). Keep doing what you can and
constantly strive to improve the adherence to Shastras.
8. Don’t dispense advise on Shastras to others gratis (Summons illama aajar aahathe).
The reasons are:
1) You don’t know their spiritual path
or their current condition 2) You yourself do not follow the Shastrams 100% what Yogyathai
do you have? 3) This is pernicious for your spiritual advancement as it fattens your ego
in a very subtle way.
My Vaadhyar even though he is so knowledgeable will never correct any one or say don’t
do this or that unless he is specifically asked by the Grihasta. Otherwise,
he will keep quiet.
9. If some sincere seeker approaches you with doubts, show them to Mahaans or the qualified
Vaideekas to ask for clarifications.
10. When I approach my Vaadhyar with doubts, his first question to me is what
is your Kula Acharam / Aathu Sampradayam? (Your house practice). If I can find this from my house
elders and report back, he tells me to follow the same. If this information is not available,
he will think for some time and tell me what to do. This has worked for me on all these questions.
I pray that Ambal and Parameswaran and Maha Periyava gives us all the ability and willingness to follow our Shastras with utmost Shraddha.

I think that our HH Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal recited Sri Siva Sahasranama, Has He also recited Sri Lalitha Sahasranama? if He has, can I please hear this recital by Him and start reciting Sri Lalitha Sahasranama sthothra by respecting Him as my Guru? Our family guru is HH Sringeri Sankaracharya. But I never had a darshan of Sringeri Sankaracharya Swamigal. I have had darshan of HH Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal only twice. Can I take HH Jayendra Swamigal as my guru?

All Shankaracharyas are jagadgurus. That means that their directions are more towards the society and the betterment of the world harmony. While we have to take their direction and follow, for certain matters, they can’t be your personal guru….While they can give direction for us, we need someone to ensure that they monitor our progress and tweak etc to ensure that we are on the right track.
For your specific question, no, I have not heard about Lalitha Sahasranamam chanting by Him. Even if He had chanted, you still need to go to a guru to get proper initiation.
If your family belongs to Sringeri Peetam, you should definitely make every effort to go and get a darshan of the Periyava. Mahaperiyava had always said that one should respect and follow family tradition. This does not mean that you can’t have cross-matam faith and worship. I know 100s of Sringeri devotees worshipping Kanchi Periyavas also. Point is not to ignore one’s kula guru. I hope this helps.
பக்தியுடன் கூடிய முயற்சிக்கு அன்னையின் அருள் எப்பாேதும் இருக்கும். தன் குழந்தை மழலையில் மிழற்றினாலும் சந்தாேஷப்படும் தாய் பாேல அவள். அஹங்காரம் தலை தூக்கும் பாேது அது நின்று விடும். குரு கிருபை அந்த அஹங்காரத்திலிருந்து நம்மை ரட்சிக்கும்.அருள் தாகம் காெண்டவருக்கு அவளே தக்க நேரத்தில் குருவை காட்டுவாள். அதற்காக நம் முயற்சியை நிறுத்தி விட வேண்டும் என்பதில்லை. ஏனெனில் அதுவே அருள் தாகத்தின் வெளிப்பாடு. பேசக் கற்றுக் காெள்ளும் குழந்தையின் முயறசி பாேல. ஆகையால் குருவின் அவசியம் உணர்நது நம் முயற்சியை விட்டு விடாமல் பக்தியுடன் -பலருக்கும காட்டிக் காெள்ளும் நாேக்கு இல்லாது பிரார்தித்து வந்தால் காலக் கிரமத்தில் அன்னை அருள் கிட்டும் என்பது என் தாழ்மையான கருத்து.

தர்ம சாஸ்த்திரம் சொல்கிறபடியே Do’s ஐயும் Dont’s -ஐயும் முறையே செய்வதும், செய்யாமலிருப்பதும் தான் நம் கடமை. சாஸ்த்திர ரூலையே மீறி சாஸ்த்திரம் படிப்பேன் என்றால் எப்படி? ‘
நிஜமான பக்தி இருந்தால் அதன் ஸ்பிரிட்டை ரக்ஷித்துக் கொடுக்கிற தர்ம சாஸ்த்திரத்திலும் பக்தி-நம்பிக்கைகள் இருக்கத் தான் செய்யும். ஆனபடியால் இப்போது சில பேர் இப்படி ஒரு போர்க்கொடி தூக்கியிருப்பதற்குக் காரணம் (ஆழ்ந்த, ஆழுத்தமான குரலில்) Non-Conformism தான் (மரபுக்குக் கட்டுப்படாமை தான்)! ‘இதுவரை சாஸ்த்திர ரீதியிலும் சட்ட ரீதியிலும் எதெதற்கு ஜனங்கள் கட்டுப்பட்டு வந்தார்களோ, நேற்று தாத்தா அப்பா வரை எப்படி ஒரு ஒழுங்குமுறையில் போனார்களோ, அந்தக் கட்டு எதற்கும் உட்படாமல் அறுத்துப் போட்டு விட்டு, இஷ்டப்படி, மனம் போனபடிப் பண்ணுவேன்’ என்பது தான் காரணம். லோகம் பூராவிலும் பரவியுள்ள ‘நான்-கன்ஃபார்மிஸ’த்துக்கு இது இன்னொரு உதாரணம் தான்.
அடங்காமை என்பது தான் இன்று நம்மைப் பீடித்திருகிற பெரிய தீமை. அது இருக்கிற வரையில் இன்றைக்கு லோகத்தில் உள்ள மாதிரி அசாந்திதான் ஸ்ர்வ வ்யாபகமாக இருக்கும்.
A member above says fast moving scenario. Really, have we ever stopped for a while to think how much have we compromised in the name of suiting to modernity and fast moving scenarios. We have lost a great deal of acharam and abushtanam by saying this. Fastness and modernity exist in the mind. All have only 24 hours in a day, it’s only up to us how we utilise this duration. A prominent nephrologist and a practicing surgeon lives in the city of Salem, TN. In spite of his highly busy schedule he finds time to perform Srimad Bhagavatham parayanam every single day. If such a person can manage to do this, surely we cannot say we don’t have time. And frankly I wonder where does fast moving really hold good here. As Mahesh says it’s not at all difficult to locate a Srividyopasaka and obtain the stotram from them and then start chanting. Not all temple priests are Srividyopasakas. So first ascertain one and then obtain as upadesham

Sir, people these days have a attitude that they know everything and that they will do anything in spite of what knowledgeable people advice. Triplicane Periyava would never speak anything that was not in sync with what Mahaperiyava said and all that Mahaperiyava said was in sync with the shastras. Above too in what you have quoted from Deivathin Kural Periyava clearly indicatestated that the Lalitha Sahasranamam has to be learnt or rather obtained from a competent guru. But our people have grown greater than Periyava and don’t want to abide by His words although they keep saying Periyava Periyava always!!
Ram Ram – Shri Sudarshan Swami. I feel your pain in explaining to folks to understand what our Sastras say including quoting directly from Sri Lalitha Sahasra Namam itself and from Sri Triplicane Periyava. It is also sad that people ignore despite you mentioning the direct authentic sources. Sri Maha Periyava says in Deivathin Kural even normal Sthothrams and Nama upadesam is auspicious if it is got as a upadesam from a Guru.
Now let me quote what Sri Maha Periyava says in this regards with regards to very subject chanting Lalitha Sahasra Nama. Here is the direct quote from Deivathin Kural. Let people decide what they want to do after reading this:
இங்கேயும் ஒரு விஷயத்தில் ஜாக்ரதை அவசியம். சில ஸ்தோத்ரங்களே மந்த்ர சக்தி பொருந்தியவையாக இருக்கின்றன. ரொம்பவும் வீர்யவித்தாகவே ‘லலிதா ஸஹஸ்ரநாமம்’, ‘லலிதா த்ரிசதி’, ‘திருமுருகாற்றுப்படை’ மாதிரி சில இருக்கின்றன. இப்படிப்பட்டவற்றை ஸம்பிரதாயப்படி குரு முகமாக ஸ்வீகரிப்பதே முறை. ஒரு பெரியவரிடம் போய் இவற்றை மூன்று தடவையாவது, அல்லது அதம பக்ஷம் ஒரு தடவையாவது அவர் சொல்லிக் கேட்டு அப்புறமே நாமாகப் பாராயணம் பண்ண வேண்டும். ‘லலிதா த்ரிசதி’ ஸமாசாரமாக இன்னும் ஒன்று அதற்கு அம்பாளின் மூல மந்திரங்களில் குறிப்பாக ஒன்றில் க்ரமமாக உபதேசம் வாங்கிக் கொண்ட பிற்பாடே அந்த ஸ்தோத்ரத்தைக் கற்றுக்கொள்ளவேண்டும்.

I see so many responses. I do see very devotional people, reading it very religiously. Also see the kalikalam with numerous problems etc. All are correct. However that does not give us any authority to by-pass certain vidhis..If we have been ignorant about few things, the moment we know the correct procedure, we should make every effort to fix this. Folks in India should not find it very hard to find out a devi upasaka and get this started (even though you have been chanting for so long) – it only makes it complete and perfect. At the end of the day, it only benefits us and not Lalitha! She does not need anything – we need everything – fight against kalikalam and all our problems etc…..Why can’t we take extra step to do this all right to yield full potential of the mantras?

पशुतुल्यस्सविज्ञेयः तस्मै दत्तं निरर्थकम् ॥
परीक्ष्य विद्या विदुषः तेभ्यो दद्यात् विचक्षणः ।
Translation
The one who doesn’t chant (with reverence), who doesn’t know the related set of (qualifying) mantra-s (i.e. Shrividya), he may be thought to be equal to an animal, and it is useless to give him (the nama-s). Hence, after duly examining the person, and ascertaining him to be initiated into the (Shri)Vidya mantra, the Sahasranama has to be given unto him.
this is kalikalam. we must help people chanting Mantras and Slokas to ward of innumerable problems. It is better that we need not say anything about peoples faith and Bakthi. Ambal Lalitha Parameswari is herself is a Guru. Let us close this at that.
Me Too agree with Mr. Chandrasekhar and Mr. Sivaraman. The above point is cent percent true.Normal chanting is itself very much sufficient and enough in today’s fast moving scenario.

As I mentioned above, the advice is from Sri Tiruvallikeni Periyava and not my own. Tiruvallikeni Periyava was one of the greatest Mahatmas this world has seen, and all can read about him in this same blog. If people seem to think differently and follow their own path, please go ahead. By the way, there is only one way of chanting Lalitha Sahasranamam and there is no other fashion or ways.
I dont agree with what Sudarshan Iyer is saying. There are various ways of reciting Lalitha Sahasranaama. If one needs to due it in the “Sri Vidya” fashion, then perhaps mantra upadesham from a Guru is required. Normal chanting of Lalitha Sahasranaamam is advisable to all.

Would you please also start a platform where we can clear our doubts regrading various religious practices, how to conduct a particular festival, the important fasts and practices we shud observe and so on….. For eg: we are planning to perform Guru pooja at home on may 22. This is the first time we are doing this. Can u please let me know what neivedyam should we offer and what procedures should be followed? Kindly let me know.
Is there specific calendar regarding various activities in matom? How the grihasthas should observe them? And also it would be great if an alert can be given over mail or phone.

Those who learnt and Chanting Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam are by Her Grace… She will send the Guru for Upadesam… It is better to keep Sri Maha Periyava Photo or Bagawan Ramana Maharshi Photo or any of Your Guru’s Photo in front of You while Learning & Chanting…
Without Her Grace we can not think of learning and Chanting Her name.

Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam has to be recited only after due upadesham from a competent Guru. This is because it involves mantra shastram embedded within the namavalis and hence, those cannot be chanted without due mantropadesham. These are not my words, but that of Sri Govinda Damodara Swamigal aka Tiruvallikeni Periyava.

Apologise if i am mistaken. I am reciting lalitha sahasranamam without any guru. We (me and my hubby) had a sudden desire to have sri chakram at our house.. we did not face any diifculty or obstacle in getting the sri chakram. It was made by a professional achari in w mambalam. I enquired with sastrigal in temples and they said on a friday i can start chanting by taking her name. So, devotees who really want to recite, pls be positive and do not worry if you dont get it recited by a guru. U are going to recite about god. So no worries.
Unfortunately, it is this mindset that has made most people recite the Vedas, too. With due respect to the Shastrigals in temples, I do not know what they told and why they told such. The information regarding the restrictions is present within the purva and uttara bhaga of Lalitha Sahasranamam. Please consult the same for further clarification
