Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara,

Sri Adi Sankara Bhagawath Padhaal’s Jayanthi is celebrated on May 11 2016 (Vaikasi Month, Panchami Thithi, Punarpoosa Nakshathiram). In Deivathin Kural, Sri Periyava talks about how Sri Bhagawath Padhaal’s Jayanthi is greater than all other Jayanthi’s. As a one man army how Sri Sankara revived Sanatana Dharma dismantling 72 religions, how he travelled across the length and breadth of Bharatha Desam propagating karma, gnanam, and bhakthi, instituting Shan Math, absolutely showing no differences in various forms of god, composing many bashyams and divine stothrams, accepting all other philosophies but establishing Advaitha as the end state, etc.  Almost 75% of volume 5 is Sri Sankara Charitham by Sri Periyava (Sankara on Sankara!!).  With Periyava’s grace one day we can hopefully publish the entire charitham as a series with translation.

கண்ணனும் சங்கரரும்

எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் விஷயம் என்ன? பகவத் பாதாள்கதை கேட்க வந்தோம். எங்கே, யாருக்குப் பிள்ளையாகப் பிறந்தார் என்று ஆரம்பிக்காமல் என்னவோ, ப்ரவ்ருத்தி நிவ்ருத்தி என்று ஆரம்பித்து சங்கராவதாரத்திற்குப் பதில் க்ருஷ்ணாவதாரத்தில் அல்லவா கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்தியிருக்கிறது? என்று தோன்றலாம்.

க்ருஷ்ணாவதார காலத்திலிருந்த சூழ்நிலை முற்றித்தான் சங்கராவதாரம் ஏற்படுவதற்கு அவசியம் ஏற்பட்டது. க்ருஷ்ணாவதாரத்தில் அவர் கொடுத்த வாக்குப்படித்தான் இவருடைய அவதாரம் நிகழ வேண்டியதாயிற்று. க்ருஷ்ணரில்லாமல் ஆசார்யாள் இல்லை. “பஜ கோவிந்தம், பஜ கோவிந்தம்” என்று லோகம் முழுக்கப் பரப்பியவர் அவர்.

அவருடைய பிறந்த ஊரில் குல தெய்வமாக இருந்த ஆலய மூர்த்தியே க்ருஷ்ணன்தானென்று சொல்வதுண்டு. இன்றைக்கு ‘ஜகத்குரு’ என்று சொன்னால் நம்முடைய ஆசார்யாள்தான் என்று ஆகியிருக்கிறதென்றால் இவருக்கு முந்தி அந்த விருதைப் பெற்றிருந்தவர் க்ருஷ்ண பரமாத்மா தான். “க்ருஷ்ணம் வந்தே ஜகத்குரும்” என்று ஸ்தோத்ரம் இருக்கிறது. அந்த ஜகத்குரு உபதேசித்த கீதைக்கு இந்த ஜகத்குரு பாஷ்யம் பண்ணியிருக்கிறார்.

எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மேலாக தர்மம் ரொம்பவும் க்ஷீணித்து, அதர்மம் மேலோங்கி எழுந்த ஒரு ஸமயத்தில் நம்முடைய ஆசார்யாளின் அவதாரம் ஏற்பட்டு, இன்றைக்கும் நாம் அவருடைய சரித்திரத்தைக் கேட்டு கேட்டு மகிழ்கிறோமென்றால், இந்த மாதிரி சூழ்நிலையில் இப்படியரு அவதாரம் ஏற்பட்டுத்தான் ஆகவேண்டும் என்று முன்னாடியே வாக்குக் கொடுத்தவர் க்ருஷ்ண பரமாத்மாதான். எல்லாருக்கும் காதில் விழுந்திருக்கக் கூடும் அவர் கொடுத்த வாக்கு:

தர்ம ஸம்ஸ்தாபநார்த்தாய ஸம்பவாமி யுகே யுகே |

இதற்கு முந்தின ச்லோகமாக அவர் சொன்னது:

யதா யதா ஹி தர்மஸ்ய க்லாநிர் – பவதி பாரத |
அப்யுத்தானம் அதர்மஸ்ய ததாத்மானம் ஸ்ருஜாம்யஹம் || ^*

அதாவது, “எப்பொழுதெப்பொழுது தர்மத்திற்கு ஹானியும், அதர்மத்திற்கு எழுச்சியும் உண்டாகிறதோ அப்பொழுதெல்லாம் நான் என்னையே அவதாரமாகப் படைத்துக்கொண்டு வருவேன்” என்று ஸத்யம் பண்ணிக் கொடுத்தார். அதைக் காப்பாற்றத்தான் ஸ்ரீசங்கராவதாரம் பிற்பாடு ஏற்பட்டது. இதனாலெல்லாம் அந்த அவதாரத்தைச் சொல்லிவிட்டு இந்த அவதாரத்தைச் சொல்வதுதான் பொருத்தம்.

அவதாரக் கதை கேட்பது இருக்கட்டும். எதற்காக அவதாரம் என்று தெரிய வேண்டுமோ, இல்லையோ? அதற்காகத்தான் ப்ரவ்ருத்தி-நிவ்ருத்தி, கர்மா-ஞானம்-பக்தி என்றெல்லாம் சொன்னது. அந்த வழிகள் எல்லாவற்றையும் செப்பனிட்டுக் கொடுத்து ஜீர்ணோத்தாரணம் செய்வதற்குத் தான் இரண்டு அவதாரங்களும் ஏற்பட்டது. க்ருஷ்ண பரமாத்மாவின் காலத்தை விடவும் இந்த வழிகளெல்லாம் சீர்கெட்டுப் போயிருந்த ஸமயத்தில் ஆசார்யாளின் அவதாரம் ஏற்பட்டு மஹத்தான புனருத்தாரணம் பண்ணிற்று.

Lord Krishna and Adi Sankara

Maha Periavaa is giving a discourse about Adi Sankara Bhgawathpadal. He addresses the audience as follows:

What is the subject we have taken to discuss today? We are to discuss about Adi Sankara.  Instead of telling you all when he was born, to whom he was born etc., all of you may be wondering as to why I am talking about Pravruthi, (manifestation), Nivruthi (cessation) etc.

When you people have come to listen to the story of Adi Shankara, why am I talking about the incarnation of Lord Krishna instead of the incarnation of Adi Shankara.  The fact is that the times of yore of Lord Krishna, became bad subsequently and kept on worsening necessitating the incarnation of Adi Shankara.  Actually, Shankara’s incarnation happened as per promise made by Krishna during His time.

There is no Adi Shankara without Lord Krishna.  In fact, he only spread the message, “Bhaja Govindam, Bhaja Govindam”, throughout the world.  It is said that in the village where Adi Shankara was born, the main deity was Krishna.  If today, when we say Jagatguru” referring to our Acharya, it was actually, Lord Krishna, who had adorned this title earlier.  There is a sloka which says,

“Krishnam Vande Jagatgurum” (Krishna is the teacher to the entire Universe).

This Jagatguru, Adi Shankara has written a commentary on the Bhagwad Gita expounded by the original Jagatguru, Lord Krishna.

More than anything else, if today, we are all happily listening to the story of Adi Sankara, whose incarnation had happened when decadence (Adharma) was gaining upper hand over Dharma (Righteousness), it was Krishna who had promised earlier that such an incarnation would definitely take place in such circumstances.

All of you must have heard of his pledge,   “Dharma Samsthabhanarthaya Sambhavami Yuge Yuge”. The sloka uttered by Krishna preceding this one was,

“Yadha Yadha hi Dharmasya, klanir bhavathi, Bharatha
Abhyudhanam Adharmasya Thadhathmanam srujamyaham”

which denotes Lord Krishna’s pledge that whenever there is danger to righteousness and decadence rises forth, he will incarnate himself in this world to set things right.  To keep up this promise only, the incarnation of Adhi Shankara had taken place.  And that is why it is proper to talk about the incarnation of Lord Krishna before we discuss the incarnation of Shri Adhi Shankara.

It is one thing to only listen to such great incarnation stories, but it is more important to understand why such incarnations have taken place.  In that context only, I was mentioning about Pravruthi- (manifestation), Nivruthi-(cessation), Karma-(ordained duty), Gnyanam-(Spiritual knowledge), etc.  These two incarnations have taken place to refine these paths of virtue, leading to salvation.   The incarnation of Adi Sankara took place at a time which witnessed more decadence than what it was during the times of Lord Krishna and helped in bringing back, days of glory.
