உருவத்தை வெச்சு எடை போடாதே!

1979-ல் வடதேஸத்துக்கு பாதயாத்ரையாக பெரியவா கிளம்பியபோது, கர்நாடகாவில் ஒரு க்ராமத்தில் முகாமிட்டிருந்தார். பெரியவாளுக்கு இயற்கை சூழலில் வஸிக்க மிகவும் பிடிக்கும் என்பதால், அங்கிருந்த ஒரு குளக்கரையில் அமர்ந்து தர்ஶனம் தந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். மெட்ராஸிலிருந்து ஒரு பெரிய டாக்டர், தன் குடும்பத்துடன் பெரியவாளை தர்ஶனம் பண்ண வந்திருந்தார்.

அப்போது பெரியவாளை தர்ஶனம் செய்ய ரெண்டு ப்ராஹ்மண பையன்கள் வந்தனர். குடுமியையும், பூணூலையும் வைத்துத்தான் அவர்கள் ப்ராஹ்மணர்கள் என்று சொல்ல முடியும்!

காரணம், அவர்கள் அணிந்திருந்த வேஷ்டியும், மேல் வஸ்த்ரமும் மஹா அழுக்கு! முகமும் உடம்பும் பார்த்தாலே தெரிந்தது, குளிக்காமலேயே வந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்று! படிப்பறிவே இல்லாத களைத்த முகத்தோடும் இருந்த அவர்களை பார்த்த அந்த டாக்டர் ‘மேற்கூறிய’ எண்ணத்தால், முகம் சுளித்தார்.

” என்ன பஸங்க? பெரியவாளை பாக்க வரச்சே இப்டியா வரது? அட்லீஸ்ட் குளிச்சுட்டு ஶுத்தமா வரணும்கற ‘பேஸிக் நாலேட்ஜ்’ கூட இல்லியே?” …..

இருவரும் நேரே பெரியவாளிடம் போய், பெரியவாளை நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிவிட்டு எழுந்ததும், அவர்கள் குளித்தார்களா? அழுக்காக இருக்கிறார்களா? என்பதெல்லாம் பெரியவா கண்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. அவர்களிடம் உள்ள விலைமதிப்பே இல்லாத ஒன்று, அவர்களுடைய ஹ்ருதயத்திலும், நாவிலும் இருந்த ஒன்றே ஒன்றுதான் பெரியவாளுக்குத் தெரிந்தது!

ஆம்! வேதம்தான் அது!

“அத்யயனம் ஆய்டுத்தா?”

தலையை ஆட்டினார்கள்.

“ரிக்வேதம் சொல்லுங்கோ”

பெரியவா சொன்னதுதான் தாமதம், அப்படியே உயரமான மலையிலிருந்து “ஹோ!” வென்று கொட்டும் [பெரியவா சொல்வது போல் “ழும்” என்ற ஶப்தத்தோடு கொட்டும்] அருவி, ப்ரவாஹமாக பெருக்கெடுத்து வந்தது போல் ரிக் வேதத்தை கணீரென்று சொல்லத் தொடங்கினார்கள்.

ஆஹா! ஆனந்தமான காக்ஷியாக பெரியவா கண்களை மூடியபடி ஆனந்தமாக கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார். கைலாஶத்திலும், ஶ்ரீவைகுண்டத்திலும் பகவான் எப்படி ஆனந்தமாக வேத பாராயணத்தை கேட்டுக்  கொண்டிருப்பான் என்பதை, இந்த காக்ஷி மூலம், நம் மனஸில் கல்பனை பண்ணி மெய் சிலிர்க்கலாம்.

பெரியவா கொஞ்ச நேரம் கழித்து, அவர்களை ஆஸிர்வதிப்பதாக, கையமர்த்திய பின்புதான் ஓதுவதை நிறுத்தினார்கள்.

“எங்கேர்ந்துடா…. கொழந்தேளா… வரேள்?”

பெரியவாளுடைய குரலில், வேதத்தின் மேல் உள்ள காதலும், வேத வித்யார்த்திகள் மேல் இருந்த ப்ரேமையும், இந்தக் காலத்திலும் தான் சொல்லியபடி வேதத்திலும், வேஷத்திலும் இருக்கும் குழந்தைகளிடம் பொங்கிய பரிவும் எல்லாமாக சேர்ந்து, அப்படியொரு குழைவு…. குரலில் பொங்கியோடியது!

ஏதோ ஒரு க்ராமத்தின் பேரை சொன்னார்கள்.

“இங்கேர்ந்து எத்தன தூரம்?….”

“அநேகமா…..இருவது மைல் தூரம் இருக்கும் பெரியவா…..”

“எப்டிப்பா வந்தேள் கொழந்தேளா ?”

” பெரியவாளை பாக்க நடந்துதான் வந்தோம்”

“திரும்பி எப்டிடா போவேள் ?”

“நடந்துதான் போவோம் பெரியவா….”

என்ன ஒரு பக்தி! ப்ராஹ்மணன், தன் கையில் காஸில்லாமல்தான் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று பெரியவா சொல்வதை கனகச்சிதமாக பின்பற்றி, கையில் காஸில்லாததால், அதை ஒரு சாக்காகவோ, குறைவாகவோ எண்ணாமல், மனஸ் முழுக்க பெரியவாளை எப்படியாவது தர்ஶனம் பண்ணிவிட வேண்டும் என்ற ஒரே ஆசையால்….. பாவம்! இருபது மைல் நடந்தே வந்திருக்கிறார்கள்!!

பின்னே….அப்போதுதான் மலர்ந்த ரோஜா புஷ்பம் போலவா இருப்பார்கள்? உடம்பில் அழுக்கும், துணியில் புழுதியும், கலங்கிய முகமும் ஏன் இருக்காது?

“போங்கோப்பா….கொழந்தேளா…..போயி மொதல்ல ஸ்நானம் பண்ணிட்டு, ஸாப்டுங்கோ…..”

அவர்களிடம் அன்பொழுகக் கூறிவிட்டு, பாரிஷதரிடம் “இவாளை அழைச்சிண்டு போயி, ஸ்நானம் பண்ணச் சொல்லு, வேஷ்டி, அங்கவஸ்த்ரம் புதுஸு ஆளுக்கு ரெண்டு குடு… நன்னா வயராற ஸாப்பாடு போடு…”

“ஸெரி…..பெரியவா…..”

அவர்கள் நகர்ந்ததும், மெதுவாக டாக்டரின் பக்கம் திரும்பினார் பெரியவா.

“எப்பவுமே….. மனுஷாளோட…. வெளில தெரியற உருவத்த வெச்சு, அவாளோட நெஜமான யோக்யதையை புரிஞ்சுக்காம மனஸை கொழப்பிக்கப்டாது”

டாக்டர் மனஸில் நினைத்த தவறுக்கு பதில் கொடுக்கும் சாக்கில், நம் எல்லாருக்கும் ஏற்ற உபதேஸமாக கூறினார்.

Do not judge by appearance
In 1979, when Periyava started to travel towards North by foot, He camped in a village in Karnataka. As Periyava likes to stay surrounded by nature, He was giving darshan sitting nearby a bank of a tank. A famous doctor from Madras came for Periyava’s darshan there along with his family.

Then, two Brahmin boys too came for Periyava’s darshan. They could be identified as Brahmin boys only because of their tuft on the head and sacred threads. It was because their clothes were extremely dirty and soiled. By looking at their body and face, it was very evident that they came without taking bath! Looking at their illiterate and tired face, because of the above mentioned thoughts, doctor squirmed and thought “What kids? Is this how one should come when they come to see Periyava? Don’t they have the basic knowledge that they should take bath before coming?”

When both the boys directly went to Periyava, prostrated before Him, Periyava didn’t even notice whether they had taken bath or whether they were dirty? Periyava noticed only their priceless possession that was in their heart and tongue. Yes, it was Vedham!

“Is your Adhyayanam over?” asked Periyava. They both nodded their heads affirmatively.
“Chant Rig Vedam”. Immediately after Periyava ordered, like a powerful stream flowing from top of a mountain, they started chanting Rig Vedam loudly and clearly.

Ahaa! Periyava was listening to this chanting happily which was a blissful sight. By seeing this, one could imagine how Bhagavan would listen happily to Vedic chanting in Kailasam and Sri Vaikuntam. After some time, only when Periyava raised His hand to shower blessings, they stopped their chanting.

“Boys, where are you coming from?” asked Periyava tenderly. His affection to Veda and love to Vedic students and pleasure that the boys learn Veda as per His suggestion even during these days was apparent in His voice.

They told some village name. “How long is it from here?”

“May be 20 miles Periyava”

“Boys, how did you come?”

“To see Periyava, we came walking”

“How will you go back?”

“We will go by walking, Periyava”

What a bhakthi! By strictly adhering to what Periyava says about Brahmins, who are not supposed to save any money, but without using that as a reason, just with the wish that they should have the darshan of Periyava, these boys came all the way walking for 20 miles. If that be so, would they look like a freshly blossomed flower? Why wouldn’t they have a dirty face and soiled clothes?

“Go….boys….take bath first and then have food”. Having told that to the boys with lot of affection, Periyava instructed the assistant “Take them with you, have them take bath, give each one of them two dhotis and upper cloths and feed them sumptuously”.

“Sure, Periyava…”

After they moved away, slowly Periyava turned towards the doctor. “Always one should not confuse without knowing their real qualification just by looking at the external appearance”.

Periyava advised all of us the above on the pretext of giving a response to the wrong thought of doctor.
