ஸ்வாமி என்றால் என்ன?

ஸ்வாமி என்றால் என்ன? ‘ஸ்வம்’ என்கிற வார்த்தைக்கு ‘உடைமை’, ‘சொத்து’ என்று அர்த்தம். ‘ஸ்வம்’ என்பதே தெலுங்கில் ‘ஸொம்மு’ என்றாகியிருக்கிறது. ‘ஸொம்மு’ என்றால் ‘சொத்து’. ஸ்வந்தம் – நமக்குச் சொந்தமானது – அதுவே நம் சொத்து. கோயிலைச் சேர்ந்த சொத்தைக் கேரளத்தில் ‘தேவஸ்வம்’ என்கிறார்கள் அல்லவா? உடைமைக்கு சொந்தக்காரர் யாரோ அந்த உடையவர்தான் ‘ஸ்வாமி’. ஸ்வாமி என்பதற்கு நேர் தமிழ் வார்த்தை ‘உடையார்’ என்பது. முன் காலத்தில் கோயில் சுவர்களில் வெட்டப்பட்ட கல்வெட்டுக்களிலெல்லாம் ‘திருச்சிற்றம்பலமுடையார்’, ‘திருவேங்கடமுடையார்’, ‘திருநாகேச்சுரமுடையார்’, ‘கபாலீசுவரமுடையார்’, என்பது போலவே ‘உடையார்’ என்ற பெயரில்தான் தெய்வங்களைக் குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

குருவும் ஸ்வாமியும் ஒன்று என்பதால்தான் வைஷ்ணவர்கள் ஸ்ரீ ராமாநுஜரை ‘உடையவர்’ என்றே சொல்கிறார்கள்.

‘ஸ்வாமி’ என்றால் சொத்துக்கு உரிமைக்காரர் என்றேன். எந்தச் சொத்து? சகலப் பிரபஞ்ஜமும்தான். அதிலுள்ள நாமும் அவன் சொத்துத்தான். உள்ளதனைத்தும் அவன் ஒருவனுக்கே உடைமையாகும். ‘எல்லாம் என் உடைமையே’ என்று தாயுமானவரும் பாடினார். நம் சொத்து, பிறர் சொத்து என்றெல்லாம் பாத்தியதை கொண்டாடுகிறோமே, உண்மையில் இந்தச் சொத்தெல்லாம்- அவற்றுக்குப் பாத்தியதை கோரும் நாம், பிறர் எல்லோருமே – அவனுடைய சொத்துதான். அவன் இல்லாவிட்டால் இந்தப் பிரபஞ்சமும் இல்லை, நாமும் இல்லை. நாம் பாத்தியதை கோருகிற சொத்துக்களும் இல்லை.

நாம் வீடு, வண்டி போன்ற சில சொத்துக்களைப் புதிதாக உண்டாக்கினதாக நினைக்கிறோம். விஞ்ஞானிகள் புதிது புதிதாக இயந்திரங்கள் செய்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் இதற்கெல்லாம் அடிப்படையில் எந்த மூலப்பொருள்களை வைத்துக் கொண்டு செய்கிறோமோ, அவை ஸ்வாமி செய்ததுதான். நாம் அவர் சொத்தை எடுத்து வேறு ஒரு ரூபத்தில் மாற்றுகிறோமே தவிர புதிதாக எதுவும் செய்யவில்லை. ‘மூலப்பொருளை (element) செய்’. ‘அணுவை (atom) உண்டாக்கு’ என்றால் எந்த விஞ்ஞான நிபுணராலும் அது முடியாத காரியம். இத்தனை மெஷின்கள், குண்டுகள் செய்கிற விஞ்ஞானியால் ஒரு சின்னஞ்சிறிய இலையைச் செய்ய முடியுமா?

எல்லாவற்றையும் செய்கிற ஒரே ஒருத்தருக்குத்தான் அவையெல்லாம் சொந்தம். அதனால்தான் அவர் உடையவர், ஸ்வாமி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். நாமும் அவரது உடமைகள்தான். நம் சொத்து என்று நாம் நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதை நம் இஷ்டப்படி விநியோகிக்க உரிமை பெற்றிருக்கிறோம் அல்லவா? அப்படியே ஸ்வாமியின் சொத்தாகிய நாமும், நம்மை அவன் இஷ்டப்படி நடத்தட்டும் என்று விட்டுவிட்டால் நமக்கு எந்த பாரமும் இல்லை. ஒரே ஆனந்தம்தான்.

இப்போது, ‘நான், நான்’ என்று எதையோ சொல்லிக்கொண்டு அலைகிறோமே, உண்மையில் இது அவனுக்குதான் சொந்தம் என்று புரிந்து கொண்டுவிட்டால் அப்புறம் நாமாகக் கிடந்து அலையமாட்டோம். நமக்கென்று சொந்தமாக ஒரு ஆசையும் ஒரு துவேஷமும் பாராட்டுவதற்கு உரிமை இல்லை என்று தெரிந்து கொண்டு விட்டால், அப்புறம் ஒரு அலைச்சலும் இல்லை. ஒரே நிம்மதிதான்! ‘ஸ்வாமி’ என்கிற வார்த்தையே, நமக்கு நம்மிடமே எந்த சொந்தமும் இல்லை. நாம் அவன் தன்னிஷ்டப்படி விநியோகிக்க உரிமை பெற்றிருக்கிற அவனுடைய சொத்துத்தான் என்பதை உணர்த்துவதாக அமைந்திருக்கிறது. இப்படி உணர்வதுதான் பக்தியின் பரம லக்ஷியமான சரணாகதி என்பது.

What is the meaning of ‘Swamy’?

What is the meaning of ‘Swamy’ ? The word ‘Swam’ means ‘one’s asset’ or ‘belonging’.  The word ‘Sommu’ in Telugu has come from the word ‘Swam’.  ‘Sommu’ means property or that is Owned or ‘Our belongings’.  Don’t they call in Kerala, the properties owned by a temple as ‘Devaswom’?   The person who owns the asset is called the ‘Swamy’.  The direct tamil word for ‘Swamy’ is ‘Udayar’.   From the words ‘Thiruchitrambalamudayar’, Thiruvengadamudayar’, Thirunageswaramudayar’, Kapaleeswaramudayar’ etc., that we find in the inscriptions on the walls of temples, we can infer that in olden days, Deities were called ‘Udayar’.

Recognizing that the Guru and Swamy are the same, Vaishnavas called Sri Ramanuja Acharya as ‘Udayavar’.

I just mentioned that ‘Swamy’ means the One who is the owner of some property.  Which property are we referring to here? We are referring to the entire Universe and all of us who are part of this Universe. All that is there in this Universe, actually, belong only to Him. ‘Everything is yours’ sang Thayumanavar.  While we stake our claims, as my property, your property etc., in reality, all of us, are part of the property owned by Him.  If He is not there, there is no Universe or we people or the properties claimed as ours.

We are all under the impression, that the house, Vehicle, etc. are what we have created. Scientists come out with so many new machines.  However, all these have been created out of the basic raw materials that have been created by God.  We only transform His belongings into new things and do not create anything new.  If we ask any scientist to create a new basic material or ‘element’ or an ‘atom’, it is just not possible for him.  Can the scientist who has designed so many machines or bombs, create a tiny leaf?

All these belong to that person, who has created them all.  That is why, He is called, the ‘Udayavar’ (Owner). All of us are also part of his property.  Just as we can appropriate the properties that we think, we own, if we realize that God who owns all of us, has the right to appropriate us in whatever manner he wants, there will be no misgivings but only bliss.

The cravings or desires for material things we now have will not be there, once we realize that all these actually belong to him.  When we understand that we do not have the right to wish anything for ourselves good or bad, there will absolutely be no misgivings. Everything will simply be blissful.  The word, ‘Swami’ itself indicates that we are not even the owners of ourselves, but part of the property on which He has every right to appropriate in whatever way he wants. This realization is called ‘Saranagathy’, the ultimate goal of bhakti.
