நேரடியாக நமக்கே நல்லது செய்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று பணத்தையும், இந்திரிய சுகங்களையும் தேடிப் போனால், இந்த உள் நிறைவு உண்டாக மாட்டேன் என்கிறது. மாறாக சுய காரியங்கள் நிம்மதியின்மையிலும் துக்கத்திலுமே கொண்டு விடுகின்றன. கண்ணாடியில் நமது முகத்தைப் பார்க்கிறோம். அதன் நெற்றியில் பொட்டில்லை என்று தெரிகிறது. உடனே கண்ணாடிக்கு சாந்து இட்டால் என்ன ஆகும்? கண்ணாடி கறுப்பாகும். பிம்பத்துக்குப் பொட்டு வைப்பது என்றால் பிம்பத்தின் மூலமான மனிதனுக்குத்தான் பொட்டு வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். ‘எனக்கு’ என்று நினைத்துச் செய்யும் காரியங்கள் உண்மையில் நம் மனசுக்குக் கரிப்பொட்டு வைப்பதாகவே—நமக்கு நாமே கரியைப் பூசிக்கொள்வதாகவே—முடிகிறது. மனசு என்கிற மாயக் கண்ணாடியில் பிரதிபலிக்கிற பரமாத்ம பிம்பத்தையே ‘நான்’ என்று நினைக்கிறோம். அந்தப் பிம்பத்துக்கு அழகு செய்வது என்றால் உண்மையில் பரமாத்மாவுக்கு அழகு செய்ய வேண்டும். பரமாத்ம ஸ்வரூபமான லோகத்துக்கெல்லாம் செய்கிற சேவை இதனால்தான் நிறைவைத் தருகிறது. இதே மாதிரி தான் அந்தப் பரமாத்மாவையே பூஜிப்பதும். தனக்கு என்று வைத்துக் கொள்கிற கரிப்பொட்டு, இப்போதுதான் அலங்காரத் திலகமாகிறது. அம்பாளுக்குச் செய்கிற அலங்காரம்தான் நமக்கு அழகு. நமக்கே செய்துகொள்கிற அலங்காரம் அகங்காரத்துக்குத்தான் வழி காட்டும். இதை மற்றவர்களும் ரஸிப்பதில்லை. அம்பாளை அலங்கரித்தால் அதைப் பார்த்து எல்லோரும் சந்தோஷிக்கிறார்கள். பிரமாதமாகச் சலவை செய்த துப்பட்டாவை நாமே போட்டுக் கொண்டு பெருமைப்படுகிறோம். மற்றவர்கள் அதைப் பார்த்து சந்தோஷமா படுகிறார்கள்? ‘இஸ்திரி எப்படி ஏறியிருக்கிறது, பார்த்தாயா?’ என்று அவர்கள் கேலியாகத்தான் கேட்டுக்கொள்வார்கள். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

If we spend money on ourselves or go seeking sensual pleasure, we do not obtain the same inner satisfaction. Work done for our own sake leads to disquiet and sorrow. We see our face in the mirror and note that there is no tilaka on our forehead. What happens if we apply a tilaka of dark unguent to the mirror [to the image]? It will be blackened. To apply a tilaka to the image means applying it to the one who is in front of the mirror. Doing things for ourselves [serving ourselves] is indeed like applying a dark spot to our mind- it is blackening ourselves. We take the image of the Paramatman reflected in the Maya mirror that is the mind to be ourselves. To bedeck the image in reality means adorning the Paramatman. This is the reason why serving humanity gives us a sense of fulfilment because humanity is a manifestation of the Paramatmam. Worshipping the Supreme Being the same. Only then will the black spot that we apply to ourselves will become an ornament. We decorate Amba to decorate ourselves. If we adorn ourselves we only enlarge our ego and feed our arrogance. When Amba is bedecked everybody will be happy about it. When we wear a well-laundered dupatta and preen ourselves, do others feel happy about it?
