மஹா பெரியவாளை தெய்வமாக நினைத்து அவருக்குக் கைங்கர்யம் செய்த பக்தர்களில் மிகவும் முக்கியமானவர் சங்கர ஐயர். அவர் சொன்ன சம்பவம் இது.

திருவாரூரில் தனது முகாமை முடித்துக் கொண்டு, அருகில் இருந்த காரணங்கோயில் என்ற ஊருக்கு பெரியவா தன் பரிவாரங்களுடன் போய்க் கொண்டு இருந்தார்.

சவுக்குக் காட்டுப்பகுதி நிறைந்திருந்த இடம். அந்தக் காலத்தில் அதைப் போன்ற வனப் பகுதியில் வழிப்பறித் திருடர்கள் திடீர், திடீரென வந்து தாக்குவார்கள். மகான் உடன் இருக்கையில் நமக்கு அச்சம் எதற்கு என்று பக்தர்கள் நடந்து கொண்டு இருந்தனர்.

ஆனால் எதிர்பாராவிதமாக கொள்ளைக் கூட்டம் திடீரென வழிமறித்தது. திருடர்கள் பல்லக்கைச் சூழ்ந்த படி நின்றனர். மகான் மெதுவாக திரையை விலக்கிப் புன்னகையோடு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து ‘அருகில் வாருங்கள்’ என்றார்.

தாக்க வந்த திருடர்களோ திகைத்துப் போயினர். அதில் ஒருவர் கூட மகானின் அருகில் போகவே இல்லை. அவர்கள் முகத்தில் பயம் தெரிந்தது. மகான் மீண்டும் அழைத்தார்.

‘கிட்ட வர முடியலீங்க எஜமான்’ என்று தங்களின் இயலாமையை ஒப்புக் கொண்டனர். அவர்கள் எத்தனை பேர் என்று மகான் விசாரித்து, அவர்கள் எல்லோருக்கும் தலா நூறு ரூபாய் கொடுத்து அனுப்புமாறு காரியஸ்தர்களுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டார்.

நூறு ரூபாய் அந்தக் காலத்தில் மிகப் பெரிய தொகை. திருடர்கள் பணத்தைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு மகிழ்ச்சியுடன்,திரும்பும் நேரத்தில் துணிச்சலாக சங்கர ஐயர், அவர்களிடம் கேட்டார்.

“பெரியவா கூப்பிட்டாரே ஏன் அவர்கிட்ட போகல்லே?” “போங்க சாமி.. நீங்க வேற… அவரைச் சுற்றி ஒரே நெருப்பா ஜொலிக்குது… எங்களுக்கெல்லாம் பயத்திலே நடுக்கமே வந்திருச்சி….இப்படிப்பட்ட காட்சியை நாங்க எப்பவும் பார்த்ததே இல்லை” என்றார்கள்.

மகானை அவர்கள் யாரென்று அறிந்து கொண்டதற்கு இதுவே சாட்சி.

திருடர்களுக்கும் அருளும் நம் பெரியவாளின் கருணைக்கு நிகரேது!

This incident was told by Sri.Sankara Iyer who is the most important among the devotees who served and felt MahaPeriyava as God.

After winding up his Camp at Thiruvaarur, Periyava with his entourage was going to ‘Kaaranangkoil’, a nearby place, through a dense casaurina forest area. In those times bandits used to suddenly attack in such forest areas. But the devotees were walking with the thought…’why to fear when the Great Saint is with them’.

But unexpectedly the bandits suddenly waylaid. The robbery gang stood surrounding the ‘Palanquin’. ‘Mahaan’ slowly moved aside the screen and smilingly said…’come near’.

But the robbers who were about to attack felt shocked. Not even one among them dared to go near the ‘Mahaan’. Their faces were filled with fear. ‘Mahaan’ called them again.

Accepting their inability, they said…’Not able to come near…Lord’.  ‘Mahaan’ enquired about how many of them were there and ordered the secretaries to offer Hundred rupees to each and see them off.

Hundred rupees is a very huge amount during those days. While the robbers were returning happily after receiving money, Sri.Sankara Iyer courageously asked them…’Periyava called you… but why didn’t you go near him?’.

They replied saying… ” dont tease us swamy…He is surrounded by a glittering ignis…we all felt jitters out of fear…we have never seen such a sight before…”

This itself proves to be a testimony for them to have realized who the ‘Mahaan’ is.

‘EXCEPTIONAL’ is our Periyava’s mercy and grace shown even towards the thieves.
