நாக்கு வெந்து போச்சு!”

(நீ சுடச்சுட எனக்கு தினமும் காபி கொடுத்து நாக்கு வெந்து விட்டது. இனிமேலாவது எனக்கு காபி கொடுக்காதே,’)

காஞ்சி மகாபெரியவருக்கு காபி குடிப்பது என்பது அறவே பிடிக்காது. தன்னை வணங்க வரும் பக்தர்களுக்கும் இதை அறிவுரையாகச் சொல்வார்.

ஒருமுறை சென்னையில் இருந்து ஒரு தம்பதி காஞ்சிபுரம் வந்து பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க காத்திருந்தனர். தங்கள் முறை வந்ததும் பெரியவரின் திருவடிகளில் விழுந்து வணங்கினர். அப்போது பெரியவர் அந்தப்பெண்ணிடம், “உன் ஆத்துக்காரர் நிறைய காபி குடிப்பாரோ?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அந்தப் பெண்ணும், “ஆமாம் பெரியவா, காலையில் ஆபீசுக்கு கிளம்பும் முன் மூணு முறையும், போய் வந்த பிறகு மூணு முறையும் குடிப்பார். ஆபீசில் வைத்து எத்தனை தடவை குடிக்கிறாரோ… தெரியாது…” என்றார்.

பெரியவர் அந்த நபரிடம், “இனிமேல் காபி குடிக்காதே. வேண்டுமானால் மோர் நிறைய குடி…” என்றார்.

ஊருக்கு சென்ற பிறகு இரண்டு நாள் மட்டும் பெரியவர் சொன்னபடி அவர் நடந்து கொண்டார். மூன்றாம் நாளிலிருந்து மனைவியிடம் காபி கேட்டு நச்சரிக்க ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார். கணவர் வற்புறுத்தும் போது, அந்த அம்மையாரால் என்ன செய்ய முடியும்? அவரும் காபி கொடுக்க ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார்.

அந்த நபர் பெரியவரின் படத்தின் முன் சூடாக காபியை வைத்து, “பெரியவா! என்னை மன்னிச்சிடுங்கோ! என்னால் காபி குடிக்காமல் இருக்க முடியவில்லை,” என்று சொல்லி வணங்கி விட்டு குடித்து விடுவார். இப்படியே பல நாட்கள் தொடர்ந்தது.

பின், அவர்கள் மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை காஞ்சிபுரம் வந்து பெரியவரைத் தரிசித்தார்கள். பெரியவர் அவரிடம், நீ சுடச்சுட எனக்கு தினமும் காபி கொடுத்து நாக்கு வெந்து விட்டது. இனிமேலாச்சும் எனக்கு காபி கொடுக்காதே,” என்றார். அந்த நபருக்கு தூக்கி வாரி போட்டு விட்டது.

நம் வீட்டில் பெரியவர் படத்தின் முன் வைத்த காபியை நைவேத்யம் போல் ஏற்று பெரியவர் பருகியிருக்கிறாரே! அப்படியானால், அது சாதாரண படமில்லையே! உயிரோட்டமுள்ளதாக இருந்திருக்கிறதே! தவறு செய்து விட்டேனே! மேலும், வீட்டில் நடந்த சம்பவம் இவருக்கு எப்படி தெரிந்தது. ஒரு மகாஞானியின் அறிவுரையைக் கேட்காமல் அவரையும் சிரமப்படுத்தி விட்டோமே!” என்று வருந்தினர்.

கண்களில் நீர் வழிய பெரியவரின் பாதத்தில் விழுந்து, “பெரியவா! இந்த ஜென்மத்தில் இனிமேல் காபியை தொடவே மாட்டேன்,” எனக்கூறி மன்னிப்பு கோரினார்.

பெரியவரும், “திருந்தினால் சரி…” என்று சொல்லி பிரசாதம் தந்தார்.

முக்காலமும் அறிந்த அந்த ஞானியின் திருவடி பணிவோம்.

My tongue is burnt drinking the hot coffee served by you, daily.

Kanchi Periayavaa detested drinking coffee and used to advice his devotees also against drinking it.  This is reinforced by the following incident.

Once a couple from Chennai visited Kanchipuram and had darshan of Maha Periavaa.  Periavaa asked the lady whether her husband drank lot of coffee.  She informed him that her husband was used to taking coffee 3 times before leaving for office and 3 times after coming from office and did not know how many times he had during the office hours.  Periavaa adviced the man to stop drinking coffee forthwith and have butter milk, if needed.

On returning to Chennai, the man followed the instructions of Periavaa only for about 2 days and from the 3^rd day onwards, began pestering his wife to give coffee.  Bowing to his pressure, the wife had to yield to his requests.  Conscious that he was violating the instructions of Maha Periavaa, the man used to keep the hot coffee in front of Periavaa’ s picture and prayed to be forgiven for his failing, saying that he was unable to refrain from the habit.  This practice went on for several days.

The couple happened to have darshan of Periavaa, again at Kanchipuram, after some time.  On meeting them, Periavaa told the man not to offer him the steaming coffee anymore, as his tongue was already burnt by the hot coffee given to him, daily.  The man was taken aback by what Periavaaa said.

He realized that the picture of Periavaa he had at home was not a simple picture but had divine powers.  He was wonder struck by the fact that the coffee that he was offering like Neivedhyam has been accepted by Periavaa sitting far away. He realized that Maha Periaava was omnipresent and regretted for his acts which had troubled Maha Periavaa.

Tears in his eyes, the man prostrated before Maha Periavaa and sought to be forgiven for his folly and promised that he would never touch coffee again in his lifetime.

Periavaa blessed him and gave Prasad and said that it was ok so long as he reformed and refrained from drinking coffee.
