“வாழைத்தண்டா? உச்சிஷ்டமா?”

(“வாழைத்தண்டு என்கிறது ஒரு சாக்கு. பெரியவா உச்சிஷ்டம் என்கிறது தான் பிரதான காரணம்”)

அநாதரவான ஓர் அம்மையார். ஒரே பிள்ளை.

அவனுக்குத் தோல் வியாதி வந்து, மருந்துகளுக்குக் கட்டுப்படாமல் மடமடவென்று பரவி விட்டது. கருமேகம், உடல் அரிக்கும், சொறிந்து கொண்டால் ரத்த விளாறு தான்.

அம்மையாருக்கு மகனின் கஷ்டத்தைப் பார்த்து சகித்துக் கொண்டிருக்க முடியவில்லை. நேரே பெரியவாளிடம் வந்து துன்பத்தை விவரித்தாள்.

“பெரியவா கிருபையாலே உடம்பு குணமாகணும். எனக்கு வேறே கதி இல்லை. வக்கும் இல்லே…”

பெரியவா அந்த அம்மாளையும், பிள்ளையையும் மடத்திலேயே இருக்கச் சொன்னார்கள். பெரியவா நாள்தோறும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிற பிக்ஷையில் மிகுந்ததை மட்டுமே அந்தப் பையன் சாப்பிட வேண்டும்.
வேறு எதுவும் – காபி,டீ,பால் உட்பட சாப்பிடக் கூடாது என்று உத்தரவிட்டார்கள்.

அம்மையார் பரம சந்தோஷமாக ஒப்புக் கொண்டார்.

பெரியவா, ‘மறு உத்தரவு வரையில்’ தன் பிக்ஷைத் திட்டத்தை சமையல்கட்டில் சொல்லியிருந்தார்கள். வெறும் வாழைத்தண்டு மட்டும் தான் பிக்ஷை!

சிறிது உப்புப் போட்டு வேகவைத்து வைத்திருப்பார், சமையல்கார சிஷ்யர். பெரியவா அதை ஸ்வீகரித்து விட்டு, கொஞ்சம் மோர் சாப்பிடுவார்கள்.

இதே வாழைத் தண்டும் மோரும் பையனுக்கும் கொடுக்கப்பட்டன. முதலில் அலுப்பும் சோர்வும் தான் வந்தன. ஆனால், பெரியவா பிக்ஷை செய்த உச்சிஷ்டம் என்ற நினைவு வந்ததும் அமுதபானமாக மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் உண்டு வந்தான்.

பத்து நாட்களுக்குப் பின், கருமையும், அரிப்பும் குறையத் தொடங்கின. நாளாக கருமை மறைந்து தோலின் இயற்கை நிறம் வந்துவிட்டது. நாற்பது நாட்கள் ஆனபின் கருமை மறைந்ததோடு மட்டுமில்லாமல் ரொம்பவும் தேஜஸோடு விளங்கினான் பையன்.

அவனுடைய தாயாருக்கு எல்லையில்லாத சந்தோஷம்.

“வேறு யாருக்கு இந்தப் பாக்கியம் கிடைக்கும்?

என் பிள்ளைக்கு வந்த வியாதி, பாவத்தின் பயன் என்று நினைத்தேன்.இல்லை புண்ணியத்தின் பயன் என்பது தெரிந்து போச்சு. பெரியவா உச்சிஷ்டத்தை தொடர்ந்தாற்போல் நாற்பது நாட்கள் சாப்பிடும் பாக்கியம் வேறு யாருக்குக் கிடைக்கும்?..” என்று புலம்பித் தீர்த்தாள்.

“எல்லாம் வாழைத்தண்டு மஹத்வம்!” என்றார்கள் பெரியவா.

“வாழைத்தண்டு என்கிறது ஒரு சாக்கு. பெரியவா உச்சிஷ்டம் என்கிறது தான் பிரதான காரணம்”

நெஞ்சாரச் சொன்னாள் தாயார்..

PLANTAIN STEM OR UCCHISHTAM

There was a lady who was survived by her only son. She was poor and very helpless.  As misfortune struck, her son was infected with some skin disease. Though medicines were administered, it could not control the infection and it spread rapidly throughout the body. He had severe itching all over the body and when he tried to rub, he got scratched and there were blood stains all over his body. Within few days, his entire body turned black and there were bruises all over the body. He was in great pain. Unable to bear the suffering of her son, she rushed to Sri Maha Periyavaa. She appealed to the great saint that he was the only resort to cure her son’s disease and there is no other source of help. Maha Periyavaa asked both the mother and son to stay in the Sri Matam itself. He also told the boy to consume only the food that is left in Maha Periyavaa’s daily alms (Bikshai). He also instructed the boy not to eat any other food including tea, coffee and milk. Instantly they agreed to it and accepted the instruction.

On the other hand, Sri Maha Periyavaa instructed the Sri Matam’s cook, who was doing kainkaryam (service) for him, to cook only plantain stem with a little salt added to it. This has to be continued till he receives further instruction from MahaPeriyavaa.  Periyavaa only had this food, later on drank some buttermilk. The same food with some buttermilk was given to the boy. At first the food seemed tasteless and boring for the boy. But when he was reminded that this is the blessing from the Maha Periyavaa itself, it turned to be elixir for him and he happily consumed it.

After ten days, changes seemed to appear. The blackness of the skin and the itching seemed to be reduced. Within days, the skin returned to its natural colour and after forty days the boy was completely normal, all his skin problems vanished and in fact his face was glowing. His mother’s happiness seemed no bounds.

She headed straight to Maha Periyavaa and with tears in her eyes said “Who else can get such a blessing. I thought that it is due to previous sins that my son is suffering. But in fact he has done a lot of good deeds to have the food given by you (Ucchishtam) for 40 days.”

MahaPeriyavaa silently said that it is the plantain stem which did wonders.

The lady whole heartedly replied that plantain stem is only an instrument but the main reason for the cure is the Ucchishtam of MahaPeriyavaa.
