We have read in so many articles that the time that Sri Mahaperiyava went through was a very difficult time due to the financial situation of the matam for several years. Periyava had gone through so much struggle to bring the matam to a greater stage – only by His thapas – nothing else. Here is “Mahan” Brahmasri Musiri Dikshitar narrating an incident from the past.
ஸ்ரீ மடத்தின் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பு என்பது சாதாரணமான விஷயமல்ல. ஆனால், அச்சிறுவனுக்கோ பால் முகம் கூட மாறவில்லை. வழி காட்ட குரு, பரம குரு, பரமேஷ்டி குரு யாரும் இல்லை. போதாதற்கு, நிதி நிலைமை மிக மோசம். பின்னாளில் அகிலமே போற்றும் மஹானாய், ‘பெரியவா’ என்ற ஒற்றைச் சொல்லே அடையாளமாய், அன்பு, எளிமை, அருள் இவற்றின் திரு உருவாய் நம்மிடையே வாழ்ந்த அந்த ஈடு இணையற்ற தெய்வத்தின், சன்யாச வாழ்க்கையின் ஆரம்ப காலகட்டத்தை முசிறி தீட்சிதர் சொல்லக் கேட்போம் வாருங்கள்.
தேனம்பாக்கம். மஹா பெரியவா பிக்ஷை நேரம். பக்தர்கள் வெளியே காத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர். உள்ளே அப்பாலகன் யாருடனோ பேசுவது தெளிவாக கேட்கிறது.
‘வாழைப் பழம் இல்லையோ?’
‘இல்லை’. அஸ்ரத்தை.
‘ஏன், வரலையா?’.
‘இல்லை’. அலட்சியம்.
‘பூவன் பழம் கூட இல்லையா?’.
பூவுலகுக்கு படியளக்கும் பெருமான் கேட்பது நெஞ்சை ஈட்டி கொண்டு குத்துவது போல் வலிக்கிறது.
‘அதுவும் இல்லை’. நிர்தாட்ஷிண்யமான பதில்.
(வெளியே நிற்கும் பக்தர் ஒருவர் வாழைப்பழ தாரே கொண்டுவந்திருப்பதும், அதை அறிந்தே மஹா பெரியவா கேட்டிருக்கக்கூடும் என்பதும், உடனே அவர் அவற்றை சமர்ப்பிப்பதும் வேறு விஷயம்).
மிக அற்பமான வாழைப் பழம் கிடைப்பது கூட அந்த நாளில் எவ்வளவு ஸ்ரமமாக இருந்திருக்கிறது நம் மஹா பெரியவாளுக்கு என்பதே நிதர்சனம்.
ஆடுதுறை: பிட்ஷை சமயம்: வ்ரத தினம் ஆதலால் கோஸ்மல்லி சேர்க்கப்பட்டது.
‘எலுமிச்சம் பழம் பிழியலையா?’.
‘இல்லை’.
‘ஏன், வரலையா?’.
‘வரலை’.
‘சந்தையில் கிடைக்குமே?’. ‘
கூட்டம். யாருக்கும் போய் வாங்க முடியலை’.
பொறுப்பை தட்டிக் கழிக்கும் பதில்.
இத்தனைக்கும், அவர் கேட்பது பக்தர்களுக்காகத்தான் என்பது தெரிந்தும்.
இவையெல்லாமாவது பரவாயில்லை. ஒரு நாள் அவருக்கு பல் உபாதை.
கைங்கர்யம் செய்பவரை உக்ராண அறைக்குப் போய் கிராம்பு வாங்கி வரச் சொல்கிறார்.
‘கிராம்பு இல்லை’.
‘நான், எனக்காக கேட்கவில்லை. பெரியவாளுக்காகத்தான்’.
‘நான் என்ன வச்சுண்டா இல்லேனு சொல்றேன்’.
இதைப் போய் காருண்யாமூர்த்தியிடம் அந்த அன்பர் தயங்கித்தயங்கி சொல்ல அவர் மென்மையான குரலில்
‘எதுத்தாப்போல இருக்கற வீடுகள்ல போய் கேளு குடுப்பா’ என்றார்.
வைத்தியர் வீட்டு மாமி பதைபதைத்து கிராம்பை கொண்டுவந்தார்.
பதிமூன்று வயது பாலகனை ஸ்ரீ மடத்திற்கு தந்த ஸ்ரீ மகாலட்சுமி தாயார் இப்படி தன் பிள்ளை வாழைப் பழத்திற்கும், எலுமிச்சை பழத்திற்கும், கிராம்புக்கும் தவிப்பதை அறிந்திருந்தால், அந்த தாயுள்ளம் எப்படி வேதனைப் பட்டிருக்கும் என்று முசிறி தீட்சிதர் மிக உருக்கமாக, கண்களில் நீர் மல்க கூறுகிறார்.
இப்பேற்பட்ட தெய்வம், தன்னை சரணடைந்தோர் அனைவருக்கும் எல்லா நலன்களையும் அளித்து, சர்வ மங்களங்களையும், சர்வ ஐஸ்வர்யங்களையும் ஈந்து காக்கும் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை.

This is the Periyavaa I have seen and Like.
HE is the perfect example for us to follow.
When you realise HE is God then you frame him in a Glass and Garland Him.
But when you realise that He has taken Human Form and lived the simple life (Like Rama) and followed the Manushya Dharma, then it is eaiser for all of us to emulate His life and regulate our life.
Maha Periyavaa Charanam
Mahaperiyava suffered for lokakshema. A part of His tapas. Like a mother following pattiyam for child sake
He is KarunaMurthi to everyone but not to His mother. When Adhi Sankara did so much to His mother, they have to change this rule

What can one tell or write? There are disinterested ThoNdars and devoted housewives who were incarnations of Maha Periyava’s Mother who both served Maha Periyava! One feels choked at the difficulties faced by young Maha Periyava. One can now understand what He later told Dr. Sundararaman, that son of Doraiswamy, “No one knows about my early struggles. A lesson for people to learn patience and tolerance, when they create troubles in family/society/country/world even for small small things when there are alternatives. Life of the Great Ones of Humanity are full of many tough and testing situations, many unknown to general public.

The title and the incident reminds me in Bhagavatam, when Krishna sent gopas to brahmanas for food they refused and he sent them again to ask brahmana’s wives and they rushed in person to give food.

This is the first time I hear such a financial crunch. A 13 year old child faces so much at that time is a testimony for Mahaperiyava ‘s patients and determination. However I am unable to resist from shedding tears.

Do we have a Periyava Panchakam highlighting Periyava’s sufferings , struggles to save the Peetam and its devotees ?
