ருக்ஷேத்ரத்தில் தான் கண்ணன் சொன்ன பகவத் கீதையும் தோன்றியது, கண்ணன் கேட்ட “விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ர நாமமும் ” தோன்றியது. எனவேதான் குருக்ஷேத்ரம், தர்மக்ஷேத்ரம் என்று போற்றப்படுகிறது. இரண்டும் தோன்றியது ஒரு ஏகாதசியில் தான் !
பீஷ்ம பிதாமகர் அம்பு படுக்கையில் இருக்கும் சமயம், பாண்டவர்கள் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணனுடன் சென்று அவரை வணங்குகிறார்கள். அப்போது ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணன் பீஷ்மரை, பாண்டவர்களுக்கு தர்மத்தை உபதேசிக்கும்படி கோருகிறார். பீஷ்மரும் அவ்வாறே அவர்களுக்கு பல தர்மோபதேசங்களை செய்து விட்டு, ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனின் பெருமைகளை போற்றும் ” ஸ்ரீ விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமம் ” என்ற திவ்ய ஸ்தோத்ரத்தையும் உபதேசிக்கிறார். இப்படிப்பட்ட ஆயிரம் நாமங்களால் போடப்படும் ஸ்ரீ மஹா விஷ்ணு வேறு யாரும் அல்லர். அவரேதான் இந்த ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணர் ! என்ற உண்மையையும் கூறி ஸ்ரீ பரந்தாமனை வணங்குகிறார்.
இந்த புண்ணிய நாள், பீஷ்ம பிதாமகரின் பெயரால் “பீஷ்ம ஏகாதசி ” என்றே வழங்கபடுகிறது. இந்த வருடம் “பீஷ்ம ஏகாதசி “, வரும் புதன் கிழமை ( 20-ஜனவரி-2016 ) அன்று வருகிறது ( தகவல் : ஸ்ரீரங்கம் வாக்கிய பஞ்சாங்கம் ).
ஸ்ரீ விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமம் அவதரித்த இந்த நன்னாளில் நாம் அனைவரும் தவறாமல் ” ஸ்ரீ விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமத்தை” பாராயணம் செய்து, சகல க்ஷேமத்தையும் பெற எல்லாம் வல்ல அந்த ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் அருள் புரிய வேண்டுகிறேன். ( தினமுமே “ஸ்ரீ விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாம பாராயணம் ” செய்வது நற்பலன்கள் தரும். )

I came across a different version about Bheeshma’s Death
Though Bheeshmaachaarya fell down in the war on the 10th day he waited for the onset of Uttarayana; the most auspicious period for a soul to depart.
Even after the onset of Uttarayana he waited for the day of Ratha Sapthami and the next day Bheeshma invoked his father’s boon of Swachchanda Maranam and died.
Thus Bheeshma is said to have died in the constellation of Rohini Star, on the 58th day after the commencement of the Kurukshetra war that happened to be Ashtami thithi.

This year Bheeshmaashtami is on 15 February [Please have it confirmed from more authentic/reliable sources]. This is the day on which Sri Bheeshma Pitamaha chose to leave his mortal coil behind. Therefore he must have chanted/taught Pandavas Srimad Vishnu Sahasranama prior to leaving this world on a Ekadasi after conclusion of Mahabharata War and crowning of Yudhistra.
Tarpanam to Sri Bheeshma Pitamaha can be offered by everyone of us including those who have parents. Sri Mahaaperiyavaa has said Sri Gangamaata Blesses all those who offer Tarpanam to her son on this day!
There is some confusion on whether Bhishma Ekasadi is either this exkadasi ( i.e 20-1-2016 ) or the one coming in February 2016

As per Haribhakti Vilasam,The Padma Purana and Skanda Purana, it was on Bheeshma Ekadashi Day (Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Magh ) that Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam was revealed to Pandavas by Bhishma Pitamaha ,while he was on ‘Sharashaiyya’ (on the bed of arrows) after the Mahabharatha war.
But as you have rightly said, let us just chant the great hymn, with our family on this Holy Day.
Hi, Namaskaram, This message has surfaced in whataspp etc. While it is very good to chant Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam (every day) atleast on every ekadasis, Bhishma ekadasi doesnt fall on 20th of Jan. The lakshana for Bhishma ekadasi is Maaga Shukla Ekadasi, which is the 11th day of the bright phase of the moon, during the month of Magam roughly maasi. This is Pushya masam not magam. Bhishma ekadasi falls after Ratha Saptami and Bhishma ashtami. So, The shukla ekadasi of February.
And it is not true that Bhishma reveled Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam on Bhishma Ekadasi because, Bhishma already left his mortal body on Bhishma ashtami day (3 days before Ekadasi).
And I agree with sriaiyerrs on the fact that Sri mad Bagavad Gita was taught to Arjuna on an Amavasya. If I remember correct, it was Karthika Amavasya. Not on Ekadasi.
While this forward/ message has good intent, it is not factually correct.
Actually, Gita was revealed on the first day of Kurukshetra war. But it was revealed to the world only after 10 days of Kurukshetra war.
After 10 days, Dridarashtra is very concerned and asks Sanjaya to narrate whatever has happened. Then only Sanjaya starts narrating the first day incidence (Githa Upadesam).
Pitamaha Bhishmar narrating the supremacy divinity and Sriman Narayanan is the god who creates the entire universe anD HE is the god who can salvage every soul. Finally,, after creating such an impact, he motivated everyone of Pandavas to have unquenchable thirst to worship Narayanan ends with the height of climax by showing Krishna who is in front of them.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita was born on an Amavasya as the Kurukshetra War began on an Amavasya. [Sri Krishna invented Bodhayana Amavasya — which falls a day before — in order to defeat Duryodhana commencing the War on Amavasya as suggested by Sahadeva] Gita was revealed to Arjuna on the very first day of the battle as he was overcome with grief having to kill his Gurus, friends & relatives… etc and the rest we all know!
